Title page missing pencil name inside front cover next page is glued to front board and quite worn hinges breaking most pages have tears bends edge and corner wear and old tape repairs. Regardless of the damage still a fascinatingly odd children's book. First edition 1899. As-is rough condition. Clean pages except for a prior owner's label on the front free endpaper some deep margin trimming without text loss in the preliminaries and occasional spots as well as some reciprocal toning adjacent to heavy ink throughout. The calfskin corners have worn almost entirely away leaving board exposed at the corners and possibly allowing in the humidity that has put a slight concavity to front and rear but the textured paper underneath was laid generously providing some protection up to the edges; the joints are starting the leather having been left quite dry and a pull has been glued shut at the spine head barely visibly because of the surface wear and cracking with nearly all gilt lost; nonetheless some decoration remains and the spine panel is all present.
