Few minor imperfections to wraps else near fine. <br /> <br /> A lovely rendering of part of King's important "A Man Dies when he Refuses to Stand Up" speech delivered in Selma on March 8 1965 while supporting the striking sanitation workers. This booklet begins with "If a Man Happens to be 36 Years Old." and concludes with ".letting the world know we are determined to be free."<br /> <br /> This comes from the collection of Phyllis Kavin of Kater-Krafts bindery in Pico-Rivera CA a passionate calligraphy collector. We find a California calligraphy artist Mark Kent having done work for the Berkeley co-op Inkworks producing political posters for Black Panther activism in the 1970s. 1904003048New York: Knickerbocker Press 1904. Here is a memorial volume celebrating a minor figure 1837-1903 of American labor history. An uncommon to scarce book. Although a member of a Zouave militia in Chicago Boies managed to avoid the Civil War due to the press of his business interests. However his military education he was instrumental in formation of the Scranton Pennsylvania City Guard which was in effect one of the several private forces mobilized against the Mollie Maguire labor unrest in the coalfields and the Great Railway Strike of 1877. When the governor swore them into the National Guard Boies instantly went from Private to Major in rank. Quercus refrains from further comment but notes once again that Orwell was right. This is a Very Good Plus copy of the First Edition. Nicely bound in blue cloth with black leather spine and tips. Gilt reproduction of the subject's signature on the front cover gilt titling on the spine. Clean text; 297 pages indexed. Nine illustrations and a frontis portrait. Camp Glen Gray is located on an 800 acre reservation in the Ramapo Mountains near Mahwah New Jersey. The mountains ring Lake Vreeland which forms the center of the camp. Started in 1917 as a Boy Scout camp Glen Gray has seen generations of campers. The camp is now operated by the Friends of Glen Gray as part of the Bergen County Parks system.
