"black letter" was the first complete Bible printed in "Lancaster Penn" and the=> first folio German Bible printed in America: It was an impressive production large in size set on good paper and the type pleasantly laid out and neatly impressed in double-column format. The frontispiece engraved by J. Henry and showing Moses with the tables of the law is appealing.<br>Â Â Â Â In the preliminaries the double-column text includes a brief biography of Luther and an essay by the famous Pietist August Herman Franke 16631727 advising how to read Scripture. The printer was only 19 years old when he undertook this massive project and despite the numerous subscribers listed on five preliminary pages in four-cloumn format he was nearly bankrupted by the enterprise.<br>Â Â Â Â In the upper outer corner of the front pastedown is the large printed binder's label of "Henrich Miller buchbinder in der Ost Dranien Strasse gegeneuber der Lancaster. <br>Â Â Â Â <br>Â Â Â Â O'Callaghan 146; Shaw & Shoemaker 47206; Arndt & Eck German Language Printing in the U.S. 2363. Binding: Contemporary sheep in the Cambridge style of three concentric panels on the covers the inner- and outermost sprinkled and the middle one left natural. Round spine with raised bands. This is the quite rare first edition of 1899 the only copy on the market as of this date. Two marks are rear cover slight wear to corners and margins of spine. Luther Dimmick 1790-1860 clergyman and writer was born in Shaftsbury Vermont graduated from Harvard Divinity School and served as the pastor of North Church in Newburyport Massachusetts. As a writer he focused on religious topics publishing many of his sermons given at North Church. His published sermons covered a range of topics and themes from funeral eulogies and reflections on Christian scholarship and daily life to essays on the moral aspects of temperance. Although it too has a religious theme his MEMOIR OF MRS. CATHARINE M. DIMMICK is a departure from his other work. It was never a sermon written instead as a spiritual biography of and a memorial to his late wife Catharine Mather Marvin Dimmick 1793-1844. Mrs. Dimmick was born in Norwich Connecticut into a prominent family with colonial roots. Her father died when she was a child and her mother died when she was a teenager and shortly after her mother's death she became a school teacher. She would later move to Newburyport and while attending North Church she met Reverend Dimmick. The two married May 4 1820 and from then until December 8 1844 when Catharine died from liver disease the couple lived a life centered around their shared faith and commitment to ministry. While narrated objectively and with a degree of distance MEMOIR OF MRS. CATHARINE M. DIMMICK is a tenderly written and intimate account of the spiritual life and daily thoughts and concerns of Mrs. Dimmick. Reverend Dimmick uses excerpts from his wife's journals and letters and reflections and comments from his wife's friends and acquaintances as well as his own remembrances to create this memoir. He presents the life of his wife as a model clergyman's wife and as the embodiment of Christian principles. A writer in a review of the book in the October 1846 issue of NEW ENGLANDER AND YALE REVIEW says of Mrs. Dimmick: "She seems to have been a lady of a superior and very active mind and of more than ordinary devotion to the various and trying duties that fall to the lot of a pastor's wife." Good. Expertly matted and protected with Mylar sheet. This copy bears the faint signature in the lower margin of patentee Luther Gale. A broadside announcement of James Madison's granting of a patent for the improvement of the bark mill to Luther Gale. The bark mill was of vital importance to tanners since the bark was used in the tanning process. The broadside has a handsome woodcut version of the Great Seal of the United States. It was Madison along with Charles Pinckney who introduced the first U.S. patent law during the 1787 Constitutional Convention. Rare. For $60.00 Gale sells one bark mill and grants to Elias Gould of Henniker County of Hillsborough NH "the full and exclusive right and liberty of using the said Bark-Mill in the town and county aforesaid." Signed by Gale and witnessed probably by his wife dated in ink September 11 1815. See RINK 1394 for one copy of an 1818 broadside printed in Lenox which takes note of a patent infringement for this patent; and for the grant of patent right see RINK 1392 which is an 1813 notification that Gale has purchased exclusive right to C. Tobey's patent bark mill. Presumably this is a somewhat different machine than our 1811 Gale patent. This broadside is not listed in Rink or Imprints. <br/><br/> unknown books

"If the exotic quality in Lafcadio Hearn was made authentic by observation that of John Luther Long 1861-1927 was largely the product of his imagination at times of high order and one that has not had proper appreciation either in fiction or drama. He was never in Japan but inspired by information which he received from his sister Mrs. Irwin Currell he established an atmosphere which has the illusion of reality and from it he evolved one character at least of supreme importance who has passed into world literature . Long continued his exotic romance in THE FOX WOMAN 1900 an imaginative novel of a crippled Japanese artist and his worship of a beautiful but soulless American woman to whom he is just a passing whim. She is the 'Fox Woman' of the Japanese who is without a soul. For her own pleasure she models him after the hideous Ni-O figures and in order to please her he tries to look like these grotesques until he grows as bestial as they and his soul becomes subject to his body just as before his ugly body had been made noble in the eyes of his wife Jewel by the splendor of his soul. Long uses effectively the utter submission of a Japanese wife to her husband's will in Marushida's present to Miss Carroway of Jewel for her body servant. The inevitable discovery on the artist's part of his abandonment by the goddess and the return of Jewel are told simply and naturally." - Quinn American Fiction pp. 516-518.
