A rare early version of Smith's MAP OF NORTH AMERICA with an inset of California with the gold regions highlighted. Another edition was published the same year by John Disturnell and it was reissued the following year to accompany the third edition of Disturnell's EMIGRANT'S GUIDE. The routes to California and Oregon from Independence Fort Smith and Port Lavaca are indicated in red and the gold regions of California are shaded yellow. Original printed paper- covered boards cloth backstrip. Minor rubbing and edge wear light staining. Internally clean. Very good plus. A rare and unusual atlas for the eastern half of the United States printed in German by noted American mapmaker J. Calvin Smith. Fifteen of the sixteen mapsheets comprise a sectional map intended to be pieced together to create a very large map of the eastern United States extending westward to parts of Texas the Indian Territory later Oklahoma and Nebraska. The sixteenth mapsheet is a general map of the United States including a good portion of lower Canada and the Caribbean extending southward to Venezuela. The sheet of explanatory text pictures the sectional map if assembled correctly from the fifteen sheets. <br> <br> This atlas was issued during a period of great German emigration to the United States and it was clearly intended for the use of emigrants and emigration offices - it would have been of great use to them. <br> <br> Most of the time Smith's maps are encountered as American productions. Considering the flood of German emigration to the United States in the mid-19th century it is logical that this map was printed to encourage the practice and therefore commissioned by German investors in the United States. 18508913New York 1850. Hardcover. Very Good. 21 ¾ x 26 inches. Lithograph with original hand color; some fold reinforcements with some mended losses at intersections very good condition. A delicately beautiful map of mid-19th century United States with extensive transportation-related content. Four of the work's five inset maps focus on rail lines and canals in specific parts of the country. The large inset of the western United States at bottom right completes the picture of the country that is not shown in the main map. Thus all of Texas is shown on the map and the California Territory is depicted as stretching as far east as the Texas border. The map generally is very well detailed and shows stage roads in addition to railroads and canals. It has a beautifully rendered floral border in which are fine scenic vistas including of Niagara Falls and a harbor scene with ship that is powered by both steam and sail. An important map of the U.S. first published in the 1846 edition which was updated for the editions of 1848 1849 this and 1850 then published separately in 1853 and 1853. With five insets to the general map: "Railroad & Canal Routes from Albany to Buffalo" "Map Showing the Rail Roads between the Cities of New York Boston & Albany" mostly missing in this copy "Railroad Route from New York to Philadelphia" "Railroad Route from Philadelphia to Washington" and "Map of Oregon Northern California Santa Fe &c." The latter inset first published in the 1846 edition although small is important for showing regions before the Mexican War and was copied by other map makers. Colamer with Respects of the Author" to the front free endpaper. J. Colamer was a Senator from Virginia. Large octavo. 7 8-536 pp. Publisher's brown cloth gilt spine lettering. Some light foxing throughout. A near fine copy. Born in Longmeadow Massachussets Colton was ordained in 1816 and worked as a pastor in western New York. He later became a professor of political economy at Trinity College Connecticut. He was a strong advocate for the protection of home industries and most of his writings reflect that. Public Economy for the United States is his most extensive work. Colton said he preferred 'public economy' over 'political economy' because the word 'political' had been abused. Political economy is "the application of knowledge derived from experience to a given position to given interests and to given institutions of an independant state or nation for the increase of public and private wealth. Freedom is a thing of 'commercial value' and the parts of the world most free require protection against those less so because the sole object of protection is to maintain and fortify freedom. Colton 1789-1857 who gave up his ministry because of the failure of his voice went to England in 1831 as a correspondent for the New York Observer. Unlike his earlier religious works which are of little value "his descriptive narratives of travel are of much real value" see DAB. Field 345: "Mr. Colton seems to have been imbued with the laudable design of affording such information regarding the Indians he visited as would not only excite the interest of his readers in his narration of incident but would arouse the sympathy of the humane to their wretched condition. Almost the entire work is devoted to the relation of Indian affairs. More than half of the first volume is occupied with personal observations of Aboriginal life and statements made to him regarding it. The second volume is entirely filled with a collection of facts relating to their origin wars treaties treatment by the governments of Great Britain and the United States and the result of missions among them." In 1843 Smith published a large map of the United States and three years later in 1846 he published the first edition of this map. Considered a really good map it basically covers the eastern and midwestern part of the U.S. California and Oregon are featured in an inset and part of Texas is also shown. Published about 50 years after the sect arrived in New York this work is an effort to set the record straight about the Shakers. In the preface the authors suggest the considerable interest in the Shakers along with the sometimes prejudiced view of these people which even included charges of drunkenness of Ann Lee and her associates was the reason for writing this book. He is appalled at his Party's impending nomination of Zachary Taylor for the presidency. Taylor a Louisiana slaveholder had never voted or participated in civil affairs. His military career most recently in the Mexican War which northern Whigs had generally opposed as an unconstitutional land-grab for slavery was his only public activity. <br/> "He is a Military Chieftain-- and he is a Slave owner and in favor of the Extension of Slavery over new territories." Webster deserves the nomination: "Let there be no wavering none of the contemptible expediency doctrine which leads men to declare in one breath that Mr. Webster is their first choice and to say the next moment that they are ready to vote for General Taylor." <br/>FIRST EDITION. Union troops on scout are asked by a Tennessee Confederate farmer to help him extricate a stuck wagon and promises them some Apple Jack in return. Unfortunately for the Union troops the story is a ruse and the "Yanks" are captured by 20 Confederates. While marching one member of the 45th chews on soap foams at the mouth and plays dead. They march on only to get freed by 50 Union troops. The original group goes back to the farmer to get the Apple Jack and tie up the farmer and take all of his provisions. <br /> <br />"The Johnnies took a look at him and then one sed/ That thar Mr Yankee is clean gone dead/ The Captain he examined him sed to one of his men/ He's the ugliest corpse I seed in my life/ and we can't stop long to tend/ to any kind of a burying for he's drawed up like a toad/ Gist roll him in the bushes on the lower side of the road.
