Original textured brown hardcovers with dull faded gilt title to the front cover spine is sunned and showing a mark from a library spine label. Interior very pretty flowered end papers with a withdrawn stamp first blank with a gift inscription from the author dated 25 Dec 1895 Montreal. Some occasional library stamps otherwise clean and unmarked. A scarce little title. Amaron 1852-1917 was a French-Canadian Presbyterian minister who "accepted a call to the French Protestant Church in Lowell Mass. to continue the work of evangelizing French Canadians. During the second half of the 19th century hundreds of thousands of French Canadians migrated south to work in the factories of New England: by 1900 they would form about 10 per cent of that regions population. Recognizing the need for educational institutions to support his evangelization Amaron founded the French Protestant College at Lowell in 1885." Dict. Of Canadian Biography. Amaron felt that the flood of Catholic French immigrants to New England was detrimental to the existing culture and that the immigrants needed to be converted to Protestantism or turned back. Amaron argues that the rapid growth of the French-Canadian population-which reached roughly 10% of New England's total population by 1900-poses an existential risk to the region's Anglo-Saxon Puritan-rooted heritage. Calvin Smith c.18091890 was an American surveyor geographer and engraver active in New York City from the 1840s. Working with partners including George Sherman under the Sherman & Smith imprint 18401853 and later in association with J.H. Colton Smith produced some of the most accurate and widely used general-purpose maps of the United States of his era. His maps appeared in government publications military surveys and commercial atlases and his multi-sheet Special-Karte der Vereinigten Staaten published in a German-language edition brought American cartographic standards to European audiences. Despite his prolific output and importance to American cartographic history much of Smith's personal biography remains obscure.This decorative map shows the region from West Canada Ottawa River towards East Canada. Detailed information on the map on Lake Ontario the Georgian Bay Nipissing Lake Temiscaming Lake and the Ottawa River. Inside the map are many place names rivers lakes etc. engraved. Colton 1789-1857 who gave up his ministry because of the failure of his voice went to England in 1831 as a correspondent for the New York Observer. Unlike his earlier religious works which are of little value "his descriptive narratives of travel are of much real value" see DAB. Field 345: "Mr. Colton seems to have been imbued with the laudable design of affording such information regarding the Indians he visited as would not only excite the interest of his readers in his narration of incident but would arouse the sympathy of the humane to their wretched condition. Almost the entire work is devoted to the relation of Indian affairs. More than half of the first volume is occupied with personal observations of Aboriginal life and statements made to him regarding it. A perfect guide for the emigrant and settler. The large format map is incredibly detailed; it is coloured by counties and gives location of cities towns villages post hamlets rail and stage roads. It was clearly never displayed in a lighted area. Original brown cloth stamped with titles and decorations minor wear at a few corners and edges. An early pencil & light flowing ink pen short name to front endpaper. First published in this edition in 1850 according to the copyright page. Dated 1854 on the title page. One internal signature loosened but still holding and attached. Several ownership/provenance markings to the front endpapers. Rear free endpaper seemingly excised. Contents mostly clean with mild scattered foxing. Quite scarce little book which defends the concept of literal corporeal resurrection which had been hotly debated amongst American Protestants in the mid-19th century. Kingsley died on a mission trip to Syria in 1870 and is buried in Beirut. The book is scarce; retained by a couple dozen institution but untraceable in the trade within the last half century.
