Erste Ausgabe dieser bekannten Streitschrift Karl Vogts mit den beiden beigebundenen Gegenschriften sehr selten. "Above all Vogt was a distinguished zoologist whose writings did much to further development of this sience" DSB XIV 57. Vogt war einst Mitglied sowohl des Vorparlaments als auch der Nationalversammlung. "Von jeher hatte sich Vogt offen der materialistischen Naturanschauung zugewandt und als nun Rudolf Wagner in ungeschickter Weise gegen die deutschen Kraft- und Stoff-Philosophen Büchner Moleschott Vogt das Feldgeschrei erhob eine bibelgemäße Forschung oder wenigstens eine 'doppelte Buchführung' des Forschers verlangte bei der seine wissenschaftlichen Funde sein Glaubenbekenntniß nicht berühren dürften bearbeitete ihn Vogt in seiner Broschüre 'Köhlerglaube und Wissenschaft' die vier Auflagen innerhalb eines Jahres erlebte mit Keulenschlägen. Er hatte stets die Lacher auf seiner Seite und erntete mit seinen drastischen Vergleichen nach denen z.B. die Gedanken in einem ähnlichen Verhältniß zum Gehirn stehen sollten wie die flüssigen Ausscheidungen des Körpers zu den Nieren eine nicht ganz unbedenkliche Volkthümlichkeit auf der anderen Seite natürlich einen maßlosen Haß der Clerikalen" ADB XL 185 ff. In einer zweiseitigen Nachschrift wird auch noch "ein gewisser Freiherr von Reichenbach" mit einer grandios formulierten Erwiderung bedacht: "Es gibt vielleicht in Wien irgend einen jungen Doktor der Medizin der einige Kenntnis von Phsychologie hat. Bitte gestrenger Herr scheuen Sie die paar Gulden nicht - lassen Sie sich ein paar Privatstunden geben suchen Sie sich das Allergewöhnlichste aus jener Wissenschaft in den Kopf zu bringen und dann - kommen's wieder". - Hirsch V 789; ADB XL 181 ff. - Wichtige politische Streitschrift des Geologen Zoologen und Politikers C. Vogt 1817-1895. - "1847-1849 war der Befürworter empirischer Forschung Professor für Zoologie an der Universität Giessen. Vogt beteiligte sich an der Revolution von 1848 wurde in die Frankfurter Nationalversammlung gewählt und hielt 1848 seine berühmte Rede über die Trennung von Kirche und Staat. Mit dem Rumpfparlament zog er sich nach Stuttgart zurück und wirkte als einer der fünf Reichsregenten. Nach der Niederschlagung der Revolution musste Vogt im Sommer 1849 nach Bern flüchten wo seine Eltern lebten. 1852 liess er sich in Genf nieder und wurde Professor für Geologie an der dortigen Akademie. Vogt lancierte einen publizistischen Angriff gegen Karl Marx den er beschuldigte ein Agent von Österreich zu sein. Zudem stellte er die Kommunisten als Fälscher dar welche die Menschen mit Schalmeienklängen verführten. Marx antwortete mit dem Pamphlet «Herr Vogt» 1860. Darin beschuldigte er nun seinerseits Vogt ein bezahlter Agent im Dienst des Kaisers Napoleon III. zu sein" S. 1870100116<p>Leeds August 29 1870. 1870. Very good. - The Indian philosopher & social reformer Keshub Chandra Sen's autograph penned on a 2-1/8 inch high by 4-1/2 inch wide slip of paper with a monograph crest reading "FAITH LOVE PURITY" embossed in red mounted at the top. Signed in full "Keshub Chandra Sen" and dated "29 August 1870 Leeds" at the time of his visit to England and his historic meeting with the Queen. The autograph is mounted with glue from the verso onto 2-3/8 inch high by 5 inch wide heavy paper stock. Very good.</p><p>The Indian philosopher and social reformer Keshub Chandra Sen 1838-1884 sought to incorporate Christian theology within Hindu thought. Residing at the Jorasanko house of the Tagore family Sen first embraced the philosophy of the Brahma Samaj led by Debendranath Tagore but broke away as he started to believe that only Christian doctrine could bring change to India. His doctrine for "Love for the Sovereign" led to his invitation to England and his meeting with the Queen in 1870. Despite his expressing support for women's education while in England Sen kept knowledge and education away from women back home which led to a conflict with the feminist and women's rights reformer Annette Akroyd. Many of his followers left him following the underage child marriage of his daughter in 1878. Sen was a Christian when he met Ramakrishna who influenced his philosophy. Sen then established his new dispensation a universal religion expressing worship of God as the Mother of all religions.</p><p>Keshub Chandra Sen arrived in Leeds on August 27th 1870 preaching a sermon at Mill Hill Chapel the following day August 28th on "The Living God in England and India".</p><p>RARE.</p> Leeds, August 29, 1870.
