His brothers were George IV and WIlliam IV<br /> <br /> An unsigned manuscript compendium of devotional prompts and theological texts in a legible and well formed hand including discourses expositions of Bible verses and a more substantial rebuttal of Thomas Tillam's book The Seventh-day Sabbath sought out and celebrated 1657.<br /> <br /> The manuscript is adorned with finely executed drawings of stylized flowers and architectural classical or heraldic ornaments. The headpiece of the rebuttal of the Seventh-day Sabbath is a nest of snakes.<br /> <br /> AN ATTRACTIVE MANUSCRIPT WITH DISTINGUISHED PROVENANCE. Broadsheet 30cm.; 2pp. Moderate wear and toning to margins some faint dust-soil else a Very Good example.<br /> <br /> Published version of a forged letter purportedly intercepted from an English Jesuit to the father rector of Brussels in which the author delineates the ways in which secret members of the Society of Jesus will undermine the British parliament trade and the monarchy: "Our Superlative Design is to work the Protestants as well as the Catholicks to welcome in a Conqueror and that is by this Means: We hope instantly to dissolve Trade and hinder the building of Shipping in devising probable Designs and putting on the State upon Expeditions as that of Cadiz was in taking away the Merchant Ships so that they may not easily catch and light upon the West-India Fleet" p. 2.<br /> <br /> The letter was in fact written by the courtier and mischief-maker John Maynard 1592-1658 and while most members of King Charles I's court accept the letter as genuine Maynard's patron the Duke of Buckingham recognized his favorite's hand.<br /> <br /> This printed edition coincides with the fabricated conspiracy of a Popish Plot which took hold of England and Scotland from 1679 to 1681 and was presumably used as evidence against the Catholics despite the fact that the letter had been debunked generations earlier. This copy lacks several title pages both of the book as a whole and of individual treatises and also lacks 10 pages of text scattered across three locations. The front board and first page of epistle dedicatory are detached from the rest of the book; this board has a mended corner. The paper is in remarkably good condition throughout apart from a few tears especially considering that the book is over 400 years old - if only some of our modern books were printed on paper as durable as this! Joseph Hall Bishop of Norwich was a Calvinistic Anglican and an English representative at the Synod of Dordt. He held some evangelical and puritan principles but was not part of the Puritan movement. Doolittle 1632-1707 originally converted after hearing Richard Baxter as a lecturer studied at Cambridge and later became a popular pastor at St. Alphage London Wall until 1662. Afterwards he would spend the next 40 years as an itinerant preacher and teacher founding school after school as King Charles II officialdom persecuted him. Marie de Blonay's career began inauspiciously--her entry into the Order of the Visitation recently founded by Francis de Sales was delayed by the brutal murder of her brother who was ambushed and stabbed to death by the son of a rival family. The tragedy occurred while his father was abroad and the body was brought instead to his sister Marie. <br /> <br /> Marie did eventually enter the rapidly expanding Order of the Visitation where she first worked as a nurse before being named Superieure of the Monastere de Lyon.<br /> <br /> OCLC locates two copies in North America as of April 2025 at Johns Hopkins and BYU. His contemporaries attributed his death to "his excesses and too much Agitation obtaining Spiritualities" Wood "Ath.
