Hopkins studied divinity under Jonathan Edwards and became his biographer. He was the pastor for the First Congregational Church in Newport R.I. for decades. He developed a new system of Calvinistic theology known as "consistent Calvinism" and coining the concept of "disinterested benevolence". It was further developed at Yale's Divinity School as a New England theology which heavily influenced the Second Great Awakening. The work was one of the most popular 18th-century captivity narratives describing a party of Quakers who were shipwrecked near present-day West Palm Beach robbed and both abused and fed by the local Jobe Indians before eventually being allowed to pass on to St. Augustine. The text concludes with later religious testimonies from the likes of David Brainerd Thomas Chalkley and Francis Guy.
