Collates as follows: BCP a4 A8-G6. Bible pi1 A8-Z8 As8-Zz8 Aaa8-Zzz8 Aaaa8-Cccc4. Psalms: A4-L4. General title for the Bible dated 1715 with the separate title page for the New Testament dated 1710. Contemporary black morocco decorated with gilt panel with gilt cornerpieces. Spine lavishly decorated in gilt. Extremities and head and foot of spine rubbed and worn and a split to the joint of upper cover at head and foot of spine. Some marking and fading to covers. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Internally very good but with some waterstaining from Bbbb and Cccc of the New Testament. The front pastedown has the very pretty book label "Martha Manning. Her Book. 1770." It is unclear exactly who this Martha Manning might be but there are two possible candidates. It might be the Martha Manning born in 1750 in Romford Essex who married William Whitford in 1771. A more exotic possibility is the Martha Manning who was the daughter of a William Manning a business associate of Henry Laurens one of the Founding Fathers and slave trader and rice planter. The Mannings had lived in St Kitts where they owned land but by the 1770s they had returned to London. In 1776 Henry Laurens's son John was in London studying law. Secretly he married Martha Manning on October 26. The following year Laurens left London and the pregnant Martha to return to America to fight in the Revolution. There he made his name working alongside Alexander Hamilton as an aide to George Washington. In 1780 Laurens was appointed to be the American special minister to France. Martha travelled to France to find her errant husband but tragically died there without seeing him. In any case this is a charming and beautiful bookplate and rare for it to belong to a woman at a time when few women owned books. This edition appears to be unrecorded in Herbert. The closest is Herbert 933 which has the OT dated 1715 and the NT dated 1712 but our copy has a 1710 NT printed by the Assigns of Thomas Newcomb and Henry Hills whose first Bible was in 1710 but was a 12mo with the text ending on S2a whereas this Bible collates continuously throughout the OT and NT. Baskett's name which is on the Old Testament title page does not appear on the New Testament until the 1712 edition and so is absent here. A nice copy of an unrecorded variant. 17147139Very Good 1714 Hamburg Germany. The first ever printing of this seminal classic. The first time that Bible stories were printed specifically for children. Thus it was somewhat "cleansed" before publication. One source I found says that the incest and murder committed by David were altered among other things. It is four inches by seven inches and includes 104 plates from engravings 52 in the Old Testament and 52 in the New Testament. There are 400 pages of text plus the eight page introduction. Also all the plates are on unnumbered pages for a total of 512 printed pages. The book is in its original calves leather boards and spine which are still attached but fragile. All pages including all front and rear endpapers are present. The last two plates have been repaired at the edges and several pages inside have edge tears or stains but they are minimal. There is the expected foxing throughout and a former owner name and inscription in pencil at the front and a name alone in pencil at the rear. The leather of the boards and spine are rubbed and worn and partially chipped off at the spine ends. The original black leather spine label with gilt titles is still present. A rare gem the only copy I have ever seen of the original first printing from 1714. Johann Hübner 1668-1731 was a German geographer born in Türchau bei Zittau on May 15 1668. He studied Theology History and Geography in Leipzig from 1689 onwards. From 1691 he was Master and then from 1694 Rector of the Gymansium at Merseburg Martisberg; then from 1711 of the Johanneum College in Hamburg. Hübner worked with Nuremberg mapmaker J B Homann 1663-1724 and English cartographer Jean Palairet 1697-1774. His other published works included Kurze Fragen aus der alten und neuen Geographie Leipzig 1693 and Museum Geographicum Das Ist: In Verzeichnis der besten Land-Charten.nebst einem Vorchlage wie daruas allerhand große und kleine Atlantes können sortiert. Anthoni de Groot and sons Contemporary gold-tooled calf sewn on 2 cords each board with a frame of single fillets with a rozette as centrepiece and a smaller stamp inside each corner each of the 3 spine compartments with 3 concentric circles and a triple fillet above and below altogether 13 impressions of 3 stamps gilt edges. Title page in red and black with a woodcut vignette an open book on a shell with decorations 7 full-page 3.3 x 1.6 cm! woodcuts depicting important scenes from the Bible 1 as frontispiece and 1 opening each of the 5 books and the appendix each book and the appendix with a headpiece built up from typographic ornaments followed by a drop-title in red and ending with a typographic ornament in red as a tailpiece. Set in roman type with incidental italic. 80 pp. First and only Dutch edition deluxe issue with the title page and 12 other pages printed in red and black of De Groots thumb Bible one of the curious miniature books printed in the Netherlands in the mid-18th century in a tiny roman type 37 mm/20 lines or 5.5 point as a curiosity and collectors item or to be used as a Bible in a dollhouse. The text is an abstract or summary of the contents of the Bible in five books and an appendix containing a prayer incipit: The illustrations and ornamental headpieces all in miniature and in the present deluxe issue also the printing in red and black make the book a show piece for the skill of 18th-century Dutch printing enhanced here by the contemporary gold-tooled miniature binding. Abkouda records De Groot offering this edition in five kinds of bindings and unbound at prices ranging from 4 to 30 stuivers so he probably commissioned bindings from several binders. The present copy is probably what he calls a Frans bandje 9 stuivers. Occasional mild embrowning. A good sturdily bound set with clean crisp text. Vol. 1 1726: 12 804 pp; engraved frontispiece - Vol. 2 1728: 8 880 pp. - Vol. 3 1730: 8; 784 pp. - Vol. 4 1732: 6 858 pp. - Vol. 5 1735: 8 820 pp. - Vol. 6 1737: 8 792 pp. First edition of this rigorous revision of Luther's version in the spirit of mystical Pietism edited by Johann Heinrich Haug d. 1753 and other scholars as is reflected in the main title: Welchem allem noch untermängt Eine Erklärung die den inneren Zustand des geistlichen Lebens oder die Wege und Wirckungen Gottes in der Seelen zu deren Reinigung Erleuchtung und Vereinigung mit Ihm zu erkennen gibt. Underlying everything is an explanation that reveals the inner state of the spiritual life or the ways and effects of God in in souls for their purification enlightenment and union with Him. A theologian and orientalist Haug was expelled from Strasburg for holding an assembly of Philadelphians and other mystic Separatists. He fled to the castle of Casimir Graf von Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berlenburg which had become a refuge for radical pietiests. Remaining there until his death Haug directed a Philadelphian organization that extended throughout western Germany. "He is said to have been a man of great piety and charming personality and was regarded by Count Casimer as a prophet of God" Schaff-Herzog. "The new spirit of mystical Pietism. was fully revealed in the Marburg Bible 1712. The interpretation of type and prophecy in this follows the federal theology of Cocceius that of Canticles and Revelation Madame Guyon. It was the forerunner of a larger work in the same spirit the Berleburg Bible of 1726-42. projected and prepared chiefly by Johann Heinrich Haug. The text is a revision of Luther's with comparison of the English and French versions; the commentary reflects the views of the Philadelphian communities and quotes the mystical books current among them especially Madame Guyon's but its teaching goes back beyond Dippel and Petersen to Jakob Böhme or even to Origen in some points. It lacks unity of belief and of treatment; it is the work not of a single mystic giving voice to his inner convictions but of a propagandist sect with radical tendencies. It is not without value however from different points of view; it edifies by its continual application of Scriptural works to the spiritual life and it prepares the way for historical criticism by an appendix containing apocrypha Old and New Testament pseudepigrapha and postapostolic writings." Two engraved frontispieces historiated initials two small engravings single large foldout map "Map shewing ye Situation of Paradice". Modern rebind is pristine and tight; text block very good overall with only the first few and last few leaves a tad edgeworn and age toned else remainder quite bright and clean with only very occasional touches of foxing and occasional discreet vintage mends; small chip to lower corner of first frontispiece not touching image; map shows paper loss along right and bottom portions the whole neatly remounted to full-size sheet. Attractive early printing of this Oxford Bible first produced by the King's Printer Baskett in 1716 and whose son Thomas later produced them mid-century -- not a so-called "Vinegar Bible" the famous typographical error in Luke XX noting the "parable of the vinegar" corrected here to "vineyard." Other than "To the Most High and Might Prince James" opening single leaf the "Translouters to the Reader" section addressing the editions consulted and the entire text that follows is done in two-column format. The Old Testament and Apocrypha are followed by the sectional title page and frontispiece for the New Testament concluding with a lengthy index and foldout map. Inner flyleaf bears 18th century ownership signature of "Tomas Hawkes / His Book." A lovely handleable copy of this large lectern Bible hence " Appointed to be Read in Churches". Interestingly laid loose into this copy is a quite lovely unsigned 9" X 13½" ink-and-wash drawing of a small cottage on a hillside in the foreground with rolling countryside in the distance along with other ephemeral fragments used as place markers in this Bible: an 1849 receipt from draper and grocer John Sneath of Wragby England and several odd scraps torn from books and a newspaper ten pages from a tiny hymnal and portions of a letterhead and invitation. Titles darkened and dusty; very occasional light foxing or oxidation spots; dampstain at bottom quarter of the first twenty and final four leaves in the first volume else a nearly fine wide-margined set crisp and uncut. First edition and the "earliest attempt to provide a critical edition of the Hebrew Scriptures on a large scaleâ€ D&M and a notable early example of a large-scale scholarly project which attracted international financial and scholarly support. The biblical scholar Benjamin Kennicott 1718-1783 was educated at Oxford and "instructed in Hebrew by Professor Thomas Hunt and the greater part of his life was spent in the collation of Hebrew manuscripts with the object of producing a definitive original text of the Old Testament. Robert Lowth always his major patron first inspired him with a desire to test the accuracy of the Hebrew text of the Old Testament. With his formidable knowledge of Syriac early Latin the Septuagint and the Samaritan Pentateuch it was recognized that he was very well qualified for the task. His critical examination of manuscripts initially in the British Museum and the libraries of Oxford and Cambridge began in 1751 and when Thomas Secker then bishop of Oxford and also a member of Exeter College urged him in March 1758 to undertake their collation he agreed to the request. In return Secker when archbishop of Canterbury gave Kennicott his unstinting support and friendship when for a time he nurtured a project for producing a revised Authorized Version of the Bible. Meanwhile in 1753 Kennicott issued The State of the Printed Hebrew Text of the Old Testament Considered: a Dissertation and in 1759 he brought out a second dissertation on the same subject. He identified his object thus: to compare Scripture with itself to explain a difficult phrase or passage by a clear one that bears some relation to it to consider the natural force of the Original Words the tendency of the Context and the Design of the Writer; to compare the most ancient editions of the Original with one another and with the best copies of the most celebrated versions vol.1 p.12. These volumes were translated into Latin by W. A. Teller and published at Leipzig the first in 1756 the second with additions in 1765. Kennicott's scholarly endeavours attracted support in Britain and beyond. In England subscriptions amounted to Â£9119 7s. 6d.; in France the duc de Nivernois a former French ambassador to the court of St James patronized him and helped him to gain access to Parisian manuscript collections in 1767; the king of Denmark offered him the use of six ancient manuscripts; four quarto volumes of variant readings were sent to him on the king of Sardinia's orders; and the stadholder of the Netherlands made an annual donation of 30 guineas. His first report On the Collation of the Hebrew Manuscripts of the Old Testament was forwarded to the subscribers in December 1760 and a similar statement appeared each year until 1769. This annual summary afforded him an opportunity to defend the accuracy of his own collations the Hebraic scholarship of the staff assisting him and to print lists of subscribers. A copy of the entire work was personally presented by Kennicott to George III. Lowth called the 1776 variorum Old Testament 'a work the greatest and most important that has been undertaken and accomplished since the Revolution of Letters' B. An early judgement on this seminal edition is provided by William Orme in his 1824 Bibliotheca Biblica: â€œThis is beyond all comparison the most splendid edition of the Hebrew Scriptures ever published. It was patronized by most of the crowned heads of Europe. It occupied its learned editor in preparation or actual labour more than thirty years. More than six hundred MSS. and editions were collated for it in all parts of Europe. The text is that of Vander Hooght without the points. The Samaritan Pentateuch where it differs from the Hebrew text is printed in parallel columns in the Hebrew character. The various readings are almost innumerable and occupy in general the largest half of every page. The Dissertatio Generalis annexed to the second volume is invaluable for the information which it contains respecting the state of the original text and the sound principles of criticism which it exhibits." The final leaf lists 312 manuscripts and some printed editions which provided the various readings noted throughout the apparatus. The concluding Dissertatio Generalis was republished separately at Braunschweig in 1783 by professor Paul Jakob Bruns who assisted Kennicott in his collations.
