This edition of the bible in Welsh here with prayerbook and psalms was issued by the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge under the editorship of Moses Williams. The first sheets were finished by November 1715 although the whole was not published until May 1718; some printings as with the Psalms here bear a printed date of 1717. This copy also contains an Apocrypha not found in all copies and a scripture index not called for by ESTC an issue without both of these was also available for nonconformists. This edition also contains the two maps of the Holy Land which per Darlow and Moule were only included in 4000 of the 10000 copies produced ‘perhaps the subscribers’ copies’. A touch of rubbing at the extremities else fine copies handsomely bound.<br /> <br /> First editions of these French-language paraphrases of the books of Ecclesiastes and Job. It includes an essay on the urim and thummim the Hebrew terms first appearing in the biblical book of Exodus that had been and are interpreted to refer to elements of the breastplate of the High Priest. Hardouin argues that the words refer to nothing material and solid and mean ‘lights’ and ‘perfections’. The text of the Latin Vulgate is printed at the side-margins alongside Hardouin’s French-language versions of the biblical texts with notes in French below. The chapters of Ecclesiastes also have French-language introductions. The French Jesuit Hardouin 1646-1729 who was the son of a bookseller is a very interesting scholar because he developed an extreme view on literary forgery. Bound in full brown leather boards ornately stamped in blind. Spine decorated in gilt with 5 raised bands. This is an older binding but is not original to the book as the endpapers are clearly more recent; we would guess this is a late 19th/early 20th century binding in the style of an 18th century binding. Covers mildly rubbed Title page slightly browned a few wormholes to the last couple pages of the index else the interior clean and tight. Overall the work is in very good condition. A collection of 500 engravings depicting the history of the world from the Biblical creation through the Second Coming of Christ. There are two engravings on each page. Each engraving measures approx. 6x5 inches and contains a caption with the appropriate Biblical verse. There is an index of the 172 illustrations in the New Testament section but none for the 328 of the Old Testament. The words "en Figures" are present on the half-title page but not on the title page. The translation gained prominence in the late seventeenth century and continued to circulate widely through early eighteenth-century editions such as this one. The volume extends to approximately 1100 pages a substantial undertaking reflecting the importance of vernacular scripture within Catholic France. De Sacy's translation influenced generations of readers balancing scholarly fidelity with linguistic clarity and editions of this scale were intended for both ecclesiastical and private use. Ownership inscription on the front flyleaf of Vol I dated 1906. Finely illustrated edition of the Sixto-Clementine Vulgate version of the Bible the translation officially authorized by the Vatican until 1979. Originally published in 1592 it contains rules for understanding Scripture the preface written by Cardinal Robert Bellarmine the papal bull by Clement VIII asserting this version’s priority the Tridentine decree on canonical books preface by St. Jerome chapter summaries under each heading and marginal concordances. <br /> This copy contains a few mementos of a 19th century Italian owner including a four-page poem of piety and a letter from one Catarina Orato Lami to her uncle written while visiting the Roman Baths in Bath England.<br /> Not in Darlow and Moule. Some light toning and spotting. Expertly rebacked by Bernard Middleton with old backstrip laid down hinges relined. An attractive copy. In 1758 Baskerville proposed the casting of a new set of Greek types to the Oxford University Press and they ordered 2000 copies of this octavo New Testament plus 500 in quarto to be printed with the resulting type - which ended up being its only use. Negative critical reception may have contributed to its abandonment but Baskerville’s Greek face has recently been reassessed by Gerry Leonidas as an important predecessor of more modern types if perhaps not quite as elegant as that used by the Foulis press that had fallen afoul of an arbitrary typographic orthodoxy. "Ben Hiyya was also distinguished in biblical exegesis and left an Aramaic translation of parts of the Bible which is often quoted. It is not to be assumed however that Joseph translated the whole Bible though the Aramaic translation of the Books of Chronicles is ascribed to him. Enc. Jud. The editio princeps edited from an Erfurt manuscript by Matthias Frederick Beck and accompanied by substantial annotations was published at Augsburg in 1680. "After this David Wilkins gave the public an edition from a Cambridge manuscript of which the text was more pure and more complete. The critic should unite both these editions the former for the value of its learned notes and the latter for its full and accurate text†The Biblical Repertory. <br /> <br /> The Coptic scholar David Wilkens 1685–1745 was born of Prussian parentage in Memel Lithuania. Little is known about his education in Germany probably in Berlin or how he acquired his knowledge of ancient and Semitic languages which was extensive rather than profound. He referred to the antiquarian Ezechiel Spanheim the elector of Brandenburg's ambassador in England from 1701 to 1710 as his former teacher. By 1707 Wilkins was studying at the Bodleian Library in Oxford and had encountered a group of clerical protectors in London. In 1709 engaged in preparing a history of the patriarchs of Alexandria which remained in manuscript and the editio princeps of the Coptic Bohairic New Testament the Novum Testamentum Aegyptium 1716 he left for the continent. He called on scholars examined manuscripts in Vienna Rome and Paris and stopped in Amsterdam in 1714 to see to the publication of his first works -- an edition of the Aramaic paraphrasis of the books of Chronicles and an Armenian version of the apocryphal third epistle to the Corinthians 1715 -- and of John Chamberlayne's polyglot edition of the Lord's prayer to which he contributed. Wilkins was an industrious scholar. In the three years he spent as librarian at Lambeth he made important contributions to the cataloguing of manuscripts. In 1721 he edited the Anglo-Saxon laws in 1725–6 the complete works of John Selden and in 1731 the Coptic Pentateuch. His main work was his Concilia Magnae Britanniae et Hiberniae an account of British church councils from 446 to 1717. A little fraying at top and bottom of joints light foxing and toning throughout due to paper quality a couple of small ink stains but a surprisingly appealing copy the text extremely clean and the unsophisticated makeshift binding--remarkably--with no significant wear.<br/> <br/> This is an almost startling survival: an 18th century New Testament in Greek in its original utilitarian binding preserved in condition far better than what could be anticipated given the audience of generally uncareful pupils for which it was intended. Considering the usual depredations of school children the rough school cloth should have been worn to shreds long ago but against the odds it has fortuitously escaped hard use and now gives us a glimpse of an important element of the English schoolroom very close to its original condition. One particularly delightful aspect of our copy is the flamboyant declaration of ownership by a pupil called John Cutter who inked his name no fewer than four times in different styles and with calligraphic flourishes across the flyleaf. Cutter's neatly penned book curse threating any would-be thieves with hanging may have helped to preserve the book as it now exists. In fact there are few signs of use by any owner rightful or unlawful. The leaves are free from any markings and the insubstantial binding appears to have rarely left the shelf. Excudebant A.
