This the famous and monumental Vinegar Bible also known as the Baskett full of errors and generally acknowledged as the most magnificent Bible printed in England. The volume is complete in all respects. It comprises the complete text of the Old Testament Apocrypha and New Testament along with the two title pages and the preliminaries. Both titles display beautiful engravings with the general title showing a particularly fine view of Oxford. Frontispiece engraved by Du-Bose representing Moses writing the first words of Genesis letterpress title printed in red & black and with engraved scene of Oxford both lined to verso. The bible has been expertly re-backed retaining the original calf leather boards with blind stamp decoration firm near fine. New Testament title dated 1716 with engraving of the Annunciation Apocrypha present numerous engraved head & tailpieces throughout Old Testament leaves P6 3B4 Z5 and New Testament leaves C4 H3 K2 M2 Q1 R1-3 S1 S6 T1 & T2 a few tears with expert paper repair and manuscript infill New Testament with a little worming to lower margins of Q1-R5. Size Quarto 10" x 7.75" 578 pages including index plus engraved plates inserted not paginated. Contemporary binding of dark brown calf decorated with ornate gilt tooled central panel to front and back covers ornate gilt corner pieces initials A.B. in centre of panel. Fiveraised bands to the spine with gilt title on black morocco label in the second and ornate fine gilt decoration in the remaining compartments. Marbled endpapers. Condition very good binding repaird and rebacked at some point outer corners restored original endpapers retained. The internal condition is very clean a few faint spots to margins of about 10 pages else contents clean. With frontispiece portrait of George III and numerous full page plates throughout of Biblical New Testament Scenes and Saints. Leonard Howard was the Personal Chaplain to the Dowager Princess of Wales. Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha was the Princess of Wales from 1736-1751 and became Dowager Princess of Wales when her husband Frederick Prince of Wales died. He produced The Royal Bible for her. The printbible by Ysbrand van Hamelsveld which contains a titlepage index and 126 folio sized leaves with 2 engravings on each. The prints are engraved by Jacob Folkema Pieter Tanje and Simon Fokke. In the year 1791 the printbible was published with accompanying descriptions by Van Hamelsveld. De ovale vignetten zijn allemaal van den hand van Jan Luyken. The so- called ""Small Print Bible of Mortier"" contemporary vellum Folio H. 345 x W. 225 x D. 6 cm. The binding is stained spine repaired two pages in the bottom margin with a tear. Front and back of the book the margins are slightly stained otherwise a good copy with extremely sharp engravings. The work consists of biblical histories from both the Old and New Testaments and the Apocrypha described by the French theologian David Martin 1639-1721. Illustrated with 2 title prints 234 engravings in the text and 29 oval vignettes. The engravings are by various artists including Jan Luyken Jan Goeree Bernard Picart and Gerard Hoet. Toning staining. Text printed in two columns. 6 engraved maps by Joseph Moxon: "Map of all the Earth"; "Paradise or the Garden of Eden"; "Israel's Peregrination"; "Jerusalem"; "Canaan The Land of Promise"; and "The Travels of St. Paul and other the Apostles". Chip missing from margin of engraved frontispiece title. Title margin stained. Final two leaves list of tables have loss at the fore-edge entering into the text. "Folio King James Version with Geneva notes likely printed at Amsterdam" Herbert 936; ESTC T82272; Darlow & Moule 936. <br> Provenance: This book was in the Curzon family and their descendants for more than 250 years. There are extensive genealogical information including 28 hand written entries over multiple generations on the Apocraypha title page. The entries begin with Richard Curson 1726-1805 and Elizabeth Becker 1731-1787. Richard was an English emigrant to colonial New York who became a prominent merchant banker and patriot buried Old Saint Paul's Episcopal Church Cemetery in Baltimore. The Cursons were sympathetic to the American Revolution and fled the British occupation of New York City for Baltimore. Additional note: His granddaughter was the first American-born Catholic Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton 1774-1821. Richard Jr. continued his father's wine trade and outfitted eight of his ships as privateers during the Revolution. Ownership passed then to Richard Jr.'s daughter Elizabeth Curson d. 1880 who married Samuel Hoffman. Includes the records of Richard Curzon Hoffman a Confederate officer in the Twenty-first Virginia Volunteer Infantry Stonewall Jackson's Second Brigade 1861-1865. The final genealogical entry is for Eliza Lawrence Hoffman b. 1891. Later the book passed to Henrietta Mactier Hoffman who married Walter Lord Sr. Early signature of Ellin Moale Curson and others. Bookplate of the author Walter Lord. John Walter Lord Jr. 1917-2002 was a noted author of more than 12 books including an account of the sinking of the RMS Titanic "A Night to Remember." Includes some related Baltimore ephemera. Lord died without issue and this Bible passed out of the family's hands after his death. Later owned by Frances Tower Thacher a descendant of the Vanderbilt family.
