The first edition of the Septuagint printed in England with the Scholia the scarce printing in quarto format. The text is derived from the Sixtine text and edited by John Biddle 1615-1662 the Unitarian controversialist who was imprisoned by the Parliamentary Commissioners for his religious views. <br/>The SCHOLIA . has a separate title-leaf register and pagination. The same setting was imposed in both quarto and octavo formats the latter with rules separating the columns of text. In regard to institutional representation the edition in quarto is much more uncommon than that in octavo: ESTC locates 4 copies of the quarto printing in North America as opposed to 19 of the octavo printing. Occasionally Daniel's reprint of the New Testament is bound up with the octavo printings to form a complete Bible. Brunet cites that format but notes the sale of a copy on "Gr. Pap." presumably a copy in this format. Over the last 35 years ABPC records sale of one copy in quarto 1999 and four in octavo. Frontis. engr. t.-p. 58 912 18 25 1 206 2 17 1 blank pp. <br><br>When the Jesuit scholars at Rheims succeeded in printing their Catholic translation of the New Testament into English first edition 1582 the event affected various English Protestant scholars in different ways: Some were offended or outraged others intrigued and yet others spurred to action. William Fulke of Pembroke College Cambridge was among those offended outraged and spurred: In 1589 he produced the first edition of his work attempting to refute the Rheims New Testament. His approach however which was to print the Rheims NT in parallel columns with the Bishops' NT the then accepted version of the Church of England supplying accompanying notes and explanations had unforeseen consequences.<br>Â Â Â Â As Darlow and Moule comment "by printing the Rheims Testament in full side by side with the Bishops' version Fulke secured for the former a publicity which it would not otherwise have obtained and was indirectly responsible for the marked influence which Rheims exerted on the Bible of 1611." Alan Thomas elaborates by observing that "many a dignified or felicitous phrase was silently lifted by the editors of King James's Version and thus passed into the language" Great Books and Book Collectors p. 108.<br>Â Â Â Â This is the fourth edition "wherein are many grosse absurdities corrected." Original blind-ruled calf without any spine labeling. The front hinge has been repaired and an antique front flyleaf has been added. The engraved title page has minor browning/toning and soiling as does the engraved armorial dedication page. The title page is apparently the only 17th Century publication containing a portrait of the first Stuart King. On the title page King James faces the reader while King David is holding a harp; engraved by William Marshall active ca. 1617-1649. The title page and final page also has minor soiling. Darlow and Moule suggest that this edition was actually printed in early 1633 as a number of copies are recorded as having their title-page dates altered by hand to read 1633 as is the case here.<br>Â Â Â Â The Apocrypha are present with the blank space on the last page of Malachi filled with an early inked "account of the several books in the Apocrypha." => The Psalter following the Bible includes music. The O.T. title-page is engraved and signed very faintly in this example by William here "Guilielmus" Hole and is framed by an elaborate architectural border displaying the coats of arms of the 12 tribes of Israel and portraits of the 12 Apostles. => The recto of the list of books is a full-page engraving of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden surrounded by animals. The New Testament has a separate title-page dated 1632 with an ornate wood-engraved border featuring Justice and Truth along with the British lion and unicorn and various architectural motifs.<br>Â Â Â Â The volume opens with two fly-leaves bearing genealogical records in several different early inked hands with dates ranging from 1743 through 1847. A characteristic gathering of the three texts the Bible being the Geneva-Tonson-Junius version in an edition that is a very close reprint of Barker's 1607 edition. The general engraved title is undated and the sectional full title-page for the NT is dated 1611 but the printer's colophon at the end is dated 1612. The text of the Apocrypha is included as a part of the contiguous whole. The edition of the Genealogies which is here bound prior to the Bible is one of the several folio printings attributed to Beale that are partially sorted as to minute variants in STC and ESTC; however this example does not conform to the variants in ESTC in regard to the line-breaks in the side note on A1V. The present edition of the Sternhold and Hopkins Psalms includes some music settings. This is among the last folio London printings of the Geneva text the standard text of 16th century Protestantism and the text referenced by Shakespeare Donne Bunyan et al. Gutbier 161767 a distinguished professor at Hamburg was universally recognized as one of the leading Orientalists of his era. His work on this New Testament was based on all of the previously published Syriac editions and on two unpublished manuscripts one of which had belonged to the emperor Constantine. Darlow and Moule note that Gutbier also includes the previously missing "five books the 'pericope de adulter' and the 'comma Johanneum.'"<br>Â Â Â Â This copy has the additional engraved title-page dated 1663 but is not one of the variant issues that include the supplementary pieces mentioned on that title. Sussexiana. However Brunet echoed by Graesse calls is très remarquable par sa belle éxecution typographique; mais la correction en a eté peu soignée et les notes ne sont pas estimées. A magnificent but not very correct edition. According to the catalogue of 1675 it was printed in four sizes of type Imperial France Real Veluws Real and Grand Mediaen. It was one of the few large-format productions of the Elzevier presses better known for their small Port-Royal New Testaments. The two printmakers who engraved Berchems designs for the Bible maps Abraham Blooteling 1640-1690 and Jan de Visscher 1632-1692 were highly respected artists who lived and worked in Amsterdam. These engravers must have been acquainted and had probably studied together in the workshop of Cornelis Visscher. Both most likely were selected or at least approved by Berchem as engravers of the map prints. Four of the five maps within the 1669 La Sainte Bible are ornamented with illustrations engraved from models by Berchem. Designs on the fifth map may also be by Berchem. For the edition of 1582 he revised his text based on the discovery of the important Codex Bezae Codex D a manuscript of the Gospels and Acts probably written in the 5th century and the principal witness to the Western textual tradition of the New Testament. Beza personally owned this codex and presented it to Cambridge University in 1581.<br>Â Â Â Â This is the first folio edition of the Greek New Testament to be printed in England as well as the => first GreekLatin edition of Beza's New Testament to be printed there. It is also considered by the ODCC to be the best edition of Beza's Latin translation of the New Testament. The text is based on Beza's fourth and last edition of 1598 and includes his annotations. The Genealogies which accompany this book have a similar typographical history to that of the King James Bible itself. John Speed was granted a patent in 1610 for ten years to issue and insert his Genealogies and double-page general map engraved by Elstrack in every edition of this Bible. ìThe King James Bible or the Authorized Version as it is now commonly but not strictly accurately known was the outcome of the conference summoned at Hampton Court by the King in January 1604 in an attempt to settle the quarrels in the Church of England arising from the Puritan zeal of some of its members. It was the leader of the Puritan party John Reynolds the President of Corpus Christi College Oxford who first suggested the idea of a new translation.It has been described as ëthe only literary masterpiece ever to have been produced by a committeeà and was the work of nearly fifty translators organized in six groups.Being based on a wider range of classical and oriental scholarship than its predecessors the Authorized Version was a more learned text.No new English translation was produced until the Revised Version of 1881 and the influence of the Authorized Version may best be described in the words of G.M. Trevelyan. ëFor every Englishman who had read Sidney or Spenser or had seen Shakespeare acted at the Glove there were hundreds who had read or heard the Bible with close attention as the words of God.
