Terminal leaves slightly soiled two ownership inscriptions on front endsheets and small Lincoln's Inn release/sale stamp vellum a bit handsoiled occasional modest foxing and dusting along upper margins but a very good copy. The first edition of the Septuagint printed in England. 8 1279 1; 186 2 pp. plus terminal blank. 1 vols. 4to signed in 8's 195 x 143mm. The first edition of the Septuagint printed in England with the Scholia the scarce printing in quarto format. The text is derived from the Sixtine text and edited by John Biddle 1615-1662 the Unitarian controversialist who was imprisoned by the Parliamentary Commissioners for his religious views. <br /> The SCHOLIA . has a separate title-leaf register and pagination. The same setting was imposed in both quarto and octavo formats the latter with rules separating the columns of text. In regard to institutional representation the edition in quarto is much more uncommon than that in octavo: ESTC locates 4 copies of the quarto printing in North America as opposed to 19 of the octavo printing. Occasionally Daniel's reprint of the New Testament is bound up with the octavo printings to form a complete Bible. Brunet cites that format but notes the sale of a copy on "Gr. Pap." presumably a copy in this format. Over the last 35 years ABPC records sale of one copy in quarto 1999 and four in octavo. Library book plate on inside front cover. Title page displays a large woodcut device. Pages are clean overall with occasional spotting and age toning; faint inscription above title page device; outer margin of pp.735-6 reinforced with contemporary paper. Fore edge of the text block is a bit rubbed. The bottom edge is stamped with a library name. Board corner tips neatly repaired. Johann Van der Waeyen 1639-1701 was a Frisian Minister scholar and controversialist. In 1677 he was forced to leave his position in Middelburg and move to Franeker. See M'Clintock Cyclopaedia of Biblical Lit. Among his better known works is a commentary on Balthasar Bekker's book on witchcraft. Van der Waeyen's interest in demonology is also apparent in this collection of tracts which contains two essays 485 pages on the demon AZAZEL who was associated with the Israelite scape-goat ritual. 1700557661700. Very good-. Small octavo 14.1 by 8.5 cm. Manuscript in black and brown ink; 18-20 lines per page; text in vocalized Hebrew. 6 title and editor's preface 146 12 blank 10 notes. Lacks the first leaf which has been supplied in manuscript by a later owner. 19th-century limp morocco rubbed at extremities gilt dentelles marbled endleaves. Faint dampstain along bottom margin occasional smudges and mild stains else very good with crisp text.<br /> <br /> Early modern transcription of the Hebrew version of the Gospel of Matthew published in 1551 at Paris by Martin le Jeune with notes at the rear likely the work of a student. This edition was prepared by Jean Cinqarbres Quinquarboreus; 1514-1587 who jointly held the chair of King's Professor of Hebrew Literature at the University of Paris with Jean Mercier d. 1570. Lapide describes this as a "literal" edition and notes that the learned French bibliographer and father of the Oratory Jacques Le Long regarded it as the "true and authentic Gospel of Matthew." Like many of the surviving copies it lacks the Appendix which comprised the Seven Penetential Psalms Psalm CXIX Daniel's Prayer and the Ten Commandments. Apart from minor formatting changes e.g. breaks between chapters the text appears to be a faithful copy including vowel points and some of the additional cantillation marks the printed marginalia new Hebrew page numbers and Cinqarbres's dated preface. As the original version contains only 17 lines of text per page the transcription is not a page-for-page copy. Here the copiest appears quite fastidious in providing appropritate new catchwords! The Latin portion of the title however differs notably from the original which reads: Sanctum Domini nostri Iesu Christi Hebraicum Evangelium secundum Matthaeum.<br /> <br /> "In 1537 Sebastian Münster published his Hebrew version of the Gospel of Matthew at Basel the first printed edition of the New Testament in the so-called 'mother tongue of the evangelist' as he states in his preface" Lapide. Like the Paris edition of Hebrew Matthew upon which the present copy is based Münster entitled his version Torat ha-Mashiah The Teaching of the Messiah. While Münster's version of Matthew was long believed to be based on the 14th-century Hebrew translation by the Jewish polemicist Shem Tov ben Isaac ibn Shaprut more recent scholarship has called this attribution into question. "There are medieval Hebrew forms of Matthew that most scholars think of as retroversions from the Greek of canonical Matthew often made to serve in arguments between Christians and Jews. However some claim that these texts are a guide to the original Hebrew of Matthew French scholars like J. Carmignac and M. Dubarle have contributed to this thesis. Still other scholars think they can reconstruct the original Hebrew or Aramaic underlying the whole or parts of the Greek text of canonical Matthew on the assumption that the original was in Semitic. With an engraved title included in the pagination displaying the figures of Moses and Aaron within an architectural design an engraved portrait frontispiece of William Addy two further engraved divisional titles also included in the pagination of the New Testament Holy Dove and the Four Evangelists and the Psalms King David playing the harp and a terminal blank. Contemporary gilt-tooled and panelled black morocco A.E.G. marbled endpapers. Some rubbing to extremities bumping to corners short split at head of spine upper hinge starting. With old bookseller's ticket tipped to verso of FFEP further bibliographical notes tipped in at end to blank fly-leaf. Early ownership initials of W.R. to verso of engraved frontispiece with a further name neatly erased. The first complete Bible to be produced entirely in shorthand engraved throughout by John Sturt and including the metrical psalms of Sternhold and Hopkins translated from the King James Authorised Version by English writing master and stenographer William Addy c.1618-c.1695. Addy's shorthand system was extensively outlined in his Stenographia or The art of short- writing compleated in a far more compendious method than any yet extant London 1684. As he himself acknowledged it owed a great debt to the system of Jeremiah Rich d. c. 1660. Darlow & Moule transcribe a note from the B.M. copy which explains the method of production: 'This Bible in Stenography my Brethren at sight and all others skill'd in ye Art of Sculpture know it's Engraven; but in a Peculiar Manner. It was written by Mr. Addy in ungum'd Ink burnished on the wax and then run through with the Engraver by John Sturt'. The old bookseller's description tipped into this copy refers to the work as the 'Pepys shorthand Bible' referencing J.W. Carlton's 1933 article "Samuel Pepys his Short-hand Books" Transactions of the Bibliographical Society. New Series Vol. XIV p.83 1933; however Pepys copy is described as featuring 'a rapturous dedication to William of Orange' which was not added until the 1689 reissue confusingly with the title continuing to display the 1687 date of this Bible. One of three slight variant editions published in 1687. All are rare; ESTC locates copies of this edition with imprint 'Printed for the author and Peter Story' on verso of the second leaf at just four locations worldwide Cambridge NYPL Oxford and Senate House. The Dutch Calvinist philologist Johann Leusden 1624 - 1699 was one of the foremost Biblical experts of his time. His edition of the Greek New Testament first appeared in 1675; this 1698 edition is quite scarce in the US and very rare with the Compendiolum. Title-page trimmed and mounted final leaf also mounted a few smaller repairs to early leaves small wormhole in blank margin some foxing and occasional light marginal dampstaining. Spine rather rubbed and darkened and sometime furbished worn at ends and joints just starting to crack at head. The second edition of Fulke’s tendentious and influential comparison of the Douay-Rheims and Bishops’ translations of the New Testament with his notes and commentary intended to refute the arguments on which the former version was based. Fulke’s work with the two texts in parallel columns the Catholic in roman type and the Church of England version in italic sold better in England than the Douai Bible ever had bringing its language to a wider readership and becoming indirectly responsible for its influence on the coming King James version. Excellent solid binding. Title page has light staining and some professional paper repairs. Old inked inscription to verso of title page John Elvy. Slight loss to upper corner of first six leaves text is unaffected. Page margins have been tightly cropped during binding a couple of the printed page borders have been trimmed but all text is complete. Pages c1 to d4 have water staining to upper and outer edge. Stain to leaf L2. A few marks elsewhere but overall a clean example. Numerous pages have an inked X to margin. Verso of Part 3 title page has the ownership inscription of James Elvy dated 1756. Tipped-in to front pastedown endpaper is a newspaper clipping relating to the demolition of the home of Richard Baxter. Main text is complete but lacking the final two additions: An extract from the conclusion of Hugh Broughton's 'A Consent of Scripture' pp305-308 and the poem 'Home' taken from George Herbert's 'The Temple' pp309-312. Both texts are printed in two columns and are red ruled throughout. The New Testament ends on S2 verso and is Herbert 683 ESTC R170626. The calf binding is mottled with iron salts. The boards are panelled with a two line roll and another narrow roll with the fittings for clasps with the hinge to the lower board in the continental manner. The arms of the clasps are lacking. The spine has raised bands with simple gilt tooling. The edges are trimmed close denoting a second binding and stained black. The endpapers are characteristic Herrenhut paste papers in a prussian blue combed design. Leaf B9 repaired at the foot with some loss of text. Inscribed on a blank before the title page 'Husey Gould the gift of Mr.Gould Febry. ye 9 1759.' "From about the middle of the seventeenth century until the appearance of the Revised Bible of 1881-5 the King James version reigned without rival" Herbert 319. One of the most influential texts in the English language Thomas Macaulay anointed it "a book which if everything else in our language should perish would alone suffice to show the whole extent of its beauty and power" PMM 114. The official work of translation was undertaken by nearly 50 scholars over the span of 1604 to 1611 but it can be seen as the culmination of nearly a century of work beginning with William Tyndale's New Testament translations and including the bibles of Coverdale and Whitchurch the Bishops' Bible the Geneva Bible and the Rheims New Testament. "Appointed to be read in Churches" the Great "He" Bible was exposed to public usage on lecterns and almost all surviving copies have suffered some manner of damage or loss. VERY EARLY AND RARE<br /> <br /> Signed by the London firm of Stephen and Thomas Lewis the earliest known bindery to paint both the firm's name and a year directly on the fore-edge paintings. Their fore-edges were typical of the time featuring elements from nature such as flowers animals or birds and they incorporated ofdten a wreath as here with a quote from Scriptures. This copy is additionally enhanced by its contemporary ownership by a woman reader. A choice example of a Commonwealth era Cambridge-printed King James Bible notorious for its errors from the press of John Field in a finely executed later provincial binding - to a very distinct style - by the Gilmour family Andrew then George of binders and stationers of Salisbury fl.1800 onwards. As was noted by the contemporary pamphleteer William Kilburne in his Dangerous errors in several late printed Bibles London 1659 part of a series railing against the poor-quality Bible printing work of Henry Hills and John Field this edition omits Psalms Ch.143 v.4 in its entirety 'and there are many other faults as I am well informed of very great notoriety'. Full-sheet engraved map of the Holy Land by John Speed after Dr John More 17 leaves of genealogical tables incorporating woodcut illustrations of Adam and Eve Noah’s Ark the Tower of Babel and other Biblical subjects numerous woodcut head- and tail-pieces historiated and ornamental initials. Contemporary calf boards rebacked spine labels; some staining a few leaves with small holes or edges torn away but generally a very good copy. With a notation on the paste-down that the book was “received of William Biggs for the sum of 5 shillings . by me John Lang. Ford Warminster†dated 1747 and with a small but elaborate bookplate of William Thomas Smedley 1858-1920 the noted collector of Elizabethaniana and Bacon; his library was sold in 1924 to Henry Clay Folger and the Folger library collection today includes nearly 1500 volumes formerly owned by Smedley. First edition second issue/state called the “she†Bible because of the reading of Ruth III 15: “she went into the citieâ€. In addition because of the small hole in C6 Matthew 26:36 it is impossible to tell whether the word Judas or Jesus is printed. The King James version of the Holy Bible is arguably the most important book ever published in English. Preparation of the Royal Version took more than 5 years and was laboriously attended to by over 50 translators and researchers. The final translations were then exchanged and reviewed reaching a final committee of six. Supervision of the printing was carried out by Miles Smith and Thomas Bilson. Although the Royal Version appropriates much from the Tyndale Coverdale Geneva and Bishops’ Bibles it is unquestionably regarded as the greatest literary translation of the Bible ever produced. Endpapers renewed a close trimmed copy with a letter or number slightly clipped here and there from the cross-textual references in the margins. The Bible lacks leaf Iii2 Luke 2 & 3 there is a tear with no loss on leaf T2 and a tear with minor loss on Cc2 the final leaf of Psalms is missing some text at the top centre and a couple of the pages have been reinforced. However this thick copy of a rare and important edition is very clean and crisp. This is an early printing of the King James Bible which was first published in 1611. Binding: full contemporary calf sides with double fillet borders enclosing the inner panel with cornerpieces rebacked tastefully with raised bands and divided in six compartments gilt lettered on two. The old clasps gone with some damage to the front board small piece of leather missing from the front board. Title page borders as described by Darlowe & Moule for the 1599 Geneva Bible has letterpress in a heart-shaped frame with 24 small compartments showing the tents of the twelve tribes and the figures of the twelve Apostles. Old and New Testament bound together without the Apocrypha in early 19th century gold- and blind-stamped straight-grained full brown morocco. The binding is signed stamped "Bound by Hering 9 Newman St" which could be any of the several members of the Hering family of London. All page edges are coated in thick gilt a.e.g. Bound in after the preface are eighteen leaves of the Genealogies of Holy scripture and a sheet containing a map of Canaan with a table on the reverse by J.S. John Speed. These 38 pages are hand-numbered in red ink with some underlining and notations and one leaf had a torn corner with loss repaired in blank. M6 with repair to margin and Aa5 with repair to margin on lower corner. Title page with small tear to the lower gutter. Minor foxing scattered lightly throughout text minor soiling to some page edges and some small spots of staining to the page edges. Printed in two columns. Octavo 8vo with height measuring 6 13/16" or 172mm. Unpaginated; A-I8 K-T8 V8 X-Z8 Aa-Ii8 Kk-Mm8 Nn7 Yy4-8 Zz8 Aaa-Iii8 Kkk-8.
