The activities progress in graphic detail.<br/> Tijuana Bibles "were produced by a shadowy criminal underground in the 1930s. Very little hard information is available about how the Bibles were created where they were manufactured and how they were distributed. One certain fact confirmed by numerous anecdotes is that these comic books were for many young men their first peek into the forbidden world of erotic intimacy" Adelman. They were crudely printed and illustrated porn tract-comic books. The skimpy stories featured contemporary movie sports folk political and cartoon characters in absurdly hyperbolic sexual relations. Why they're called Tijuana Bibles is a matter of speculation; 'Tijuana' was typically associated with iniquity and as an outlet for behavior considered impermissible elsewhere. Properly considered the ancestor of America's underground comics Tijuana Bibles declined in popularity in the 1960's as mainstream publications like Playboy would satisfy readers' prurient interests.<br/>Adelman Tijuana Bibles. This volume is the second in the series of "smallest books in the world" that the Germans are so fond of printing. This book contains the Lord's Prayer in seven languages: English French German English American version Spanish Dutch and Swedish. The size of a printed page is 3.5 x 3.5 mm. Every page of the book has been engraved on metal in a type-foundry and was not reduced by photographic means. Printing and folding are a technical challenge. Very Good/Fine facsimile of "Ms Kennicotti" held in the Bodleian Library at Oxford University a finely decorated manuscript of the Hebrew Bible that resembles in some ways the Book of Kells in the use of animal figures and and intricate marginal decorations although the style comes from the Ibero-Islamic tradition rather than the Celtic one. The manuscript was copied out twenty years prior to the expulsion of Jews from Spain in 1492 by Moshe Ibn Zabara and Yosef Ibn Chaim containing the entire Tanak together with the Radak commentary and Sefer HaMichlol. It is known as the "Kennicott Bible" after Benjamin Kennicot 1718-1783 the English clergyman and Hebraist who acquired the manuscript for Oxford University. An exceptionally beautiful facsimile five and a half years in the making it is printed on deluxe paper stock intended to reproduce the appearance of the original vellum. The gold highlights in the facsimile illustrations were applied by hand. The commentary by Bezalel Narkiss and Aliza Cohen-Mushlin provides a scholarly yet approachable historical context and artistic appreciation. Two volumes the Bible one of 975 copies elephant folio size 942 pp. and Making of the Bible number 178 of 1875 copies quarto size 41 pp. The second folio Bible designed by Bruce Rogers this time for an American publisher his first was the "Oxford Lectern Bible" published in 1935 using the King James Version. No other book designer / typographer from the history of printing can claim to have designed two complete folio Bibles each one highly regarded. Bruce Rogers 1870-1857 American typographer who invented the "Centaur" tyepface based on the Renaissance-period printing of Nicolas Jenson is considered by many to be one of the greatest book designers of the twentieth century. He designed books for the Riverside Press Cambridge when he cut his first typeface "Montaigne" named for the first book it appeared in "The Essays of Montaigne" 1903; he designed "Centaur" while working as house designer for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 1916 he worked for the Cambridge University Press and a few years later returned to the U.S. where he met William Edwin Rudge and was employed by him at his Mount Vernon Press. During this time he also designed books for Harvard University Press and served as typographic advisor to Lanston Monotype. In 1928 Rogers returned to England where he produced what many have called "the most important and notable typographic achievement of the twentieth century" being his Oxford Lectern Bible. Hinkley 1923. 8vo. 14 vols. 70 plts. <br><br>This handsome and much-sought edition of the King James Bible was printed at the Merrymount Press and limited to 2574 sets: 1000 on wove paper 1000 on laid paper 488 on handmade paper and 86 on Japan paper. This set is #233 printed on handmade paper and contains 70 fine plates usually 5 per volume and mostly photogravures after paintings. The edition was designed for smooth reading and the text is set in ordinary paragraphs without chapter and verse numbers.<br>Â Â Â Â This work has a complicated and as yet not fully explained printing history. It was probably first printed in 1904 with sheets reissued or reprinted at various times in the subsequent two decades. Even the name of the publisher on the title-page varies; "The Grolier Society" sometimes appears in place of Hinkley.<br>Â Â Â Â Binding: Publisher's quarter tan pigskin spine leather over deeply grained polished bare wooden boards with bevelled edges on the three outer sides in the style of incunable and 16th-century books.
