VG. light scuffs to covers. creasing & indentations to cover edges; creaseing to spine edges. bumping & creasing to some corners. interior clean. square tan boards w/ cover illustration. illustrated flyleafs. book ix 271 w/ bw illustrations. A collection of Steinberg's works. Drawn between 1954 and 1960 some are previously unpublished. The majority of published items were originally published in the New Yorker during that period. Recurring themes throughout the collection are the posturing of men and women; social relationships architecture urbanization; politics and artmaking. Around 1960 Steinberg began to introduce more cerebral conceits and the final portion of the book displays more conceptual art. -- adapted from "Notes" page 256. "Throughout his career the acclaimed artist Saul Steinberg created a series of unique wondrous books. Far richer than simple catalogs or collections of drawings these carefully arranged works formed a kind of continuous visual autobiography--a record in drawings both simple and detailed comic and beautiful of an inimitable mind's encounter with the world. The Labyrinth first published in 1960 and long out of print may be the best of these. Here is Steinberg as he put it at the time "discovering and inventing a great variety of events: Illusion talks music women cats dogs birds the cube the crocodile the museum Moscow and Samarkand winter 1956 other Eastern countries America motels baseball horse racing bullfights art frozen music words geometry heroes harpies etc." This edition featuring all the original art along with new editorial material will allow readers to discover and invent Steinberg's world all over again"--Publisher. 200312036New York: The Library of America 2003. First edition of the Library of America release of the author's first three novels. Octavo original maroon cloth. Signed by both Saul Bellow and James Wood on the title page. James Wood served as editor. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Rare signed as the author was aged at this point and did not attend booksignings for the release of this edition. Looking back at his first two novels later in his career Bellow "distanced himself from them by calling Dangling Man his M.A. and The Victim his Ph.D." Like many of his works the protagonist is a young Jewish man. In a New York heat wave he is accosted in the park by a stranger who accuses him of ruining his life. "The best novel to come out of America-or England-for a generation" The New York Review of Books.
