Brown cloth boards with gilt lettering to front cover printed endpapers 107 pp. Inscribed by author "W.A. Durward Presented by his Dear Brother B.I. Durward March - 1883." W.A.'s ownership inscription on leaf prior. Front endpaper & first leaf detached edgewear to book. Bernard Durward brought his family to Wisconsin in 1845 lived at Neosho Milwaukee and finally at Durward's Glen his rural retreat near Merrimac. He early established himself as a portrait painter of notable Milwaukee figures. His paintings especially the monochrome "Crucifixion" the "St. Francis de Sales" the "Bishop Henni" and later pictures of fruit and flowers show decided attention to texture and composition. Following his conversion to Catholicism in 1851 he was the first teacher of English at St. Francis Seminary. Durward edited the unique Milwaukee Catholic Magazine 1875 published an early volume of poetry Wild Flowers of Wisconsin 1872 Poems 1882 and Cristofero Colombo 1887 all of which show lyric and imaginative ability. The bottom corner of the rear cover is bumped & the edges of the cover are darkened. The spine is darkened with the leather dried out & cracking & the gilt lettering is partially rubbed away. xii & 274 pages and iv & 241 pages plus index. The front hinge is just starting. The pastedown endpapers & rear blanks are foxed with occasional light foxing to the rest of the volume. There are small scraps of paper adhering to the pastedowns.There is a small black stain to the front endpaper & fore-edge with tiny stains to the front edges of a few pages. Second free endpaper & pages 22-23 are tearing loose but still barely attached; all other pages securely stitched & binding is strong & straight both hinges secure. Bright gilt to all exterior page edges interior pages are creamy white & unmarked. Exterior shows rubbing to extremities & bumping to corners with mild cloth loss at both ends of spine all corners & a few places along fore edge side of front board.
