Text is clean and unmarked binding tight tanning of pages due to paper used and age. Cover show heavy signs of wear. This is the story of the second Grinnell Expedition during 1853-54. It was financed to find the fate of the lost John Franklin expedition it was lead by Elisha Kent Kane. pack ice in 1855. While three members of the crew were lost the epic journey of the expedition set a new to record for northward penetration delineated 960 miles 1540 km of unexplored coastline north of 82° latitude and discovered the long-sought open Polar Sea. Kane collected valuable geographical climate and magnetic observations before abandoning the brig Advance the survivors inspired the public with the tale of their survival. Franklin had died in 1847 it was unknown at the time of Kane's endeavors. A great tale of survival in the early days of Artic exploration. <br/> <br/> Brown & Taffard hardcover
