This variant has the price on the title page. A near fine book with the rear hinge starting and an archival tape repair to the front hinge. Hawkins Brown is cited as a friend of Samuel L. Johnson and was a poet MP and Barrister during his lifetime 1706-1760 Trinity College Chapel Memorials. 1778WRCAM41363Virginia 1778. One folded sheet. Approximately 550 words. Tanned at folds. Some ink burn through page. An embossment on one side reads "Washington County." A small closed tear affects approximately six characters. A manuscript land deed written by Isaac Cox for the sale of land to John Decker. In the deed Cox refers to "Yohogania County" a Virginia county created in 1776. The county included much of south-western Pennsylvania and overlapped with Pennsylvania's own western claims. The land in question is "on the river Ohio and bounded on the East by lands of Thomas Pollack and on the North by lands of William McMahan said land goes by the name of the Mingo Bottom containing four hundred acres." Mingo was a term for the Native Americans mostly Iroquois who had been displaced and settled in the northern Ohio river basin. Modern-day Mingo Junction lies in the far rnorthern pan-handle of West Virginia north of Steubenville Ohio and would have had close associations with Washington County Pennsylvania than Virginia. This association would explain why in 1806 a Washington County clerk approved the deed. unknown books

Worldcat reference calls for a folding frontis but this book exhibits a non-folding well-fitting engraved portrait appropriately dated and ascribed to this volume. The book reflect the complex and changing role of literature in society ranging from Bardic poetry to Victorian verse. It contained many classic works from important dramatists and poets including Samuel Johnson 1709-1784 Hester Lynch Thrale 1741-1821 Richard Savage c.1697-1743 Dr. William Dodd 1729-1777 Oliver Goldsmith 1730-1774 William Collins 1721-1759 and Thomas Gray 1716-1771. On the left four emaciated French sanculottes are depicted tugging the limbs of one frog with violent imagery in the background. A broken pitcher is labeled 'Water'. Rats are seem scurrying around while a starved cat appears dead or dying. On the right four plump Englishmen sit around a table indulging in a feast. Pitchers are seen overflowing with foam. A well fed dog is resting while a cat catches prey. A window in the background shows lush vegetation and people working the land. In very good condition for this scarce caricature. Sheet measures 10 1/8 x 14 1/8"<br/><br/> This caricature depicts the Duke of Orleans Philippe Egalite dressed as a sansculotte holding an axe above Louis XVI who is kneeling with his head on a chopping clock. Marie Antoinette and the Dauphin kneel behind the King crying and pleading with the Duke to show "a touch of pity". An unattractive old woman holds a basket ready to catch the king's severed head. Published on January 26 1793 by SW Fores "who has again opened his Caractur Room to which he has added many hundred old & new subjects. admittance 1 shilling."
