Octavo pp. 30 864 sig. 8 27 31 A-Z8 2A-2Z8 3A-3H8 with engraved frontispiece plus four folding engraved diagrammatic plates numerous tables within text. Title-page printed in black and red printer's device to centre. Contemporary mottled sheep spine on three bands triple fillet borders in blind to boards; all edges speckled red. Ownership inscription of 'Gottlieb Schuyl' to front paste-down partially obliterated numerous other numerical marks of ownership in ink to the same; inscription to half-title dated 1778 'Pro Coirtu Hradistiensi // Fruim Minor Reformator. // Provicie Hungarie poe // uatoris' i.e. 'For the council of Hradcany minor reformer of the province of Hungary poet of the poets'. Scuffs and gouge to boards brown paint and historic paper shelf label to spine. Lacks preliminary and final blanks text-block and plates collated and complete; loss to third plate affecting one quarter of area see photo; light foxing and some intermittent heavier toning commensurate with the famously poor quality of German paper of the seventeenth century throughout. A fair copy. Newton published this edited and revised edition of the German Bernhardus Varenius' 1622-1650 textbook on the mathematics of geography and navigation for his students at Cambridge in 1672 making this Newton's first publication mere months before the publication of the Opticks. While the English editions were much reprinted in Cambridge and then London this first German edition is scarce outside of continental Europe. Published while Newton was Luasian Professor of Mathematics of Cambridge 1669-1702 Newton's version became the standard text on the subject for over a century. This edition reproduces Newton's Latin text with copies of the plates seen in the earlier Elsevier edition of 1650. While Newton's works were read and received within Germany from their first publication this is the first of his works published in Germany. USTC 2647283. VD17 39:115486D. Contemporary blind-tooled vellum with the manuscript author and title on the spine a lozenge-shaped ornament on both boards surrounded by a single and a double fillet border remnants of two leather closing ties densely red sprinkled edges. Folio. With a richly engraved title a full-page engraved portrait of the author by J. van Velde 5 double-page engraved maps of Gelderland 4 double-page engraved plans of Nijmegen Arnhem Zutphen and Harderwijk all with a view in profile at the top and 3 full-page engraved portraits of Arnold van Egmond Karel van Egmond and Maarten van Rossem by H.L. Roghman and Retter. First edition of the first extensive history of the duchy of Gelre present day Gelderland in the Netherlands beautifully illustrated with large maps and plans. The work consists of fourteen books. The first contains a historical-topographical description of the region while the other thirteen tell the history of Gelre in chronological order from the time of the Batavi until 1581 when the Plakkaat van Verlatinghe Act of Abjuration was signed. The maps shows various parts of Gelre in detail and the plans depict the four main towns: Nijmegen Arnhem Zutphen and Harderwijk.Johannes Isaac Pontanus 1571-1639 a historian and medical doctor from Harderwijk was commissioned to write the history of Gelre in 1621. The local government het Hof van Gelre and Zutphen had already asked for this history in 1597 but the other historians they had commissioned Paulus Merula 1558-1607 and Johannes Lontius -1621 had both passed away before they were able to complete the work. Pontanus used their notes for his history together with various other manuscripts and finished it shortly before his own death. The work was translated into Dutch by Arend van Slichtenhorst in 1653 using the same maps and plans but in a reduced size.With a later manuscript index on the second free flyleaf and a contemporary inscription on the back pastedown. The edges and corners of the boards are slightly scuffed the vellum is slightly rubbed with a brown ink stain on the front. The work is lightly browned and finger soiled throughout with an occasional small tear of water stain in the margins. With an engraved title 7 engraved maps and plates 5 folding 2 double-page and 50 engraved maps and views in the text. First edition of the first objective description of Amsterdam and its history with extensive accounts of Dutch East India Company's VOC maritime trade exploration and navigation. It contains the report of Willem Barentsz' voyages to the Arctic region in search of a North-East passage to Asia 1594-1597 the accounts of the two first Dutch voyages to the East Indies including the voyage of Cornelis de Houtman 1595-1597 and the account of the Dutch exploration of Greenland 1594-1596. The work is also important as an Americanum as it gives the results of Henry Hudsons first two voyages to the Arctic 1607-1608 for the Muscovy Company of London. These reports are beautifully illustrated by large maps and views including a famous map of the North Pole region.Johannes Isaac Pontanus 1571-1639 was a physician and historian who was a professor at the University of Harderwijk for most of his life. He wrote several important historical works such as the history of Denmark of the Duchy of Gelre and of Amsterdam. His work on Amsterdam far exceeds the limits of the usual town descriptions elaborately incorporating the history of the voyages of exploration and commerce undertaken by the enterprising citizens of Amsterdam. Pontanus also describes in detail the activities on the Amsterdam stock and commodity markets which were among the earliest of the world and at the time the most important. The extent of the citys trading activities by this time is shown by illustrations of scenes from Indonesia and India to the Arctic.The binding is somewhat stained and soiled with a restoration at the foot of the spine and along the fore and foot edge of the back board. The work is lightly browned and foxed throughout a faint water stain in the margin of the last 11 leaves. Otherwise in good condition.l Alden & Landis II 611/91; V.
