Negotiation contract dated 1770 signed by the director Daniel Changuion and his commissioners Jan Wouter Valkenier and Cornelis Jacob van der Lyn for an obligation of 1000 gulden for plantations in Rio Essequebo and Rio Demmerary. Essequebo and Demerary which was part of Essequebo was a Dutch colony from 1616 to 1814 and was part of the colonies which were also known as Dutch Guiana. Also Surinam which is much more known as Dutch colony in South America was part of this so-called Dutch Guiana. Dutch Guiana should not be seen as a formal entity but as a geographical indication for the Dutch colonial area. The sovereignity of the different colonies was varying: Essequebo and Demerary were reigned by the Dutch WIC which were at that moment in their second period and at that time focusing on slave trade from Africa to the Americas amongst other activities.Nevertheless this obligation act reflects the highly optimistic zeitgeist of 1770 when the investments and obligations in the Dutch colonial plantations kept growing. Therefore this negotiation contract can be seen as an important document for the Dutch economical and colonial history.With an owner's inscription in the right upper corner of the first page and a manuscript annotation on the last page: Van 3. Engraved frontispieces to each volume plus three integral engraved plates by Van Gucht to vol. 2 numerous woodcut headpieces tailpieces drop capitals and ornaments to both volumes. Collated and complete. Uniformly bound in contemporary marbled calf spines on five raised bands ornamented in gilt to compartments lettered in gilt to red and camel morocco spine labels gilt rolls to edges; all edges marbled; marbled end-papers; blue silk place-markers to both volumes. Minor shelf-wear to extremities minor loss to head of volume 1 leather cracking a little on spine but bindings strong and very solid. Contents clean. An excellent set. A two-volume set of poetic miscellanies predominantly of the works of Matthew Prior 1664�1721 but with a curious amatory section to the end of volume two. Prior was a poet statesman and Tory ally to Robert Harley and the Scriblerians. His biographer states that his primary interests were 'women collecting friends a country estate and writing.' He was 'arguably the most important poet writing in English between the death of Dryden 1700 and the poetic majority of Pope in 1712'. He proved a continually popular entry in miscellanies a form of publication which gathered together various works sometimes on a theme. This set is a rather curious miscellany while dominated by Prior's works approximately the final third of volume 2 consists of 'Original Poems and Translations by Various Hands' - a deliberately vague title to a truly varied selection of poetry. A reader's interest may have been piqued by the first poem in the section Hildebrand Jacob's amatory verse on female auto-eroticism 'The Curious Maid' often misattributed to Prior which is accompanied by an engraved plate of a woman using a mirror to peek under her own skirts. What follows are a series of amatory bawdy and controversial works many laden with innuendo as in 'The Silent Flute: Or the Members Speech to their Soveraign' sic. while others use the tried-and-true guise of classical translation to depict scenes of 'heaving breasts and extended thighs'. Other poems in the collection are on less lurid but still interesting topics: Bedlam snuff marriage politics and the manners of the day. The title rather overstates the 'original' nature of the works: they mostly appear to be printed from earlier sources but their gathering together here nonetheless places these poems in new contexts. Miscellanies were an important venue for erotic amatory and controversial works indeed much of John Wilmot Earl of Rochester's poetry was first published in miscellanies by Edmund Curll. This title is unique in Jacob's prolific output because it discusses civil and canon law at length. The mention of "civilians proctors clergy and gentlemen" in the subtitle is significant. Jacob though certainly interested in boosting sales by attracting the widest audience possible was an idealist who believed that widespread knowledge of the law would help create a more just society. Margins a little frayed not affecting image a few small marginal tears repaired but very good.</p> <p>Excellent mezzotint portrait of German physician and botanist Christoph Jacob Trew after whom the East Indian plant genus Trewia is named. Trew was the author of the lavishly illustrated Hortus nitidissimis omnem per annum superbiens floribus 1750-86 and Plantae selectae quarum imagines ad exemplaria naturalia Londini in hortis curiosorum nutrita 1750-73 both with plates engraved after drawings by the noted 18th century botanical artist Georg Dionysius Ehret; the latter work has been described as "one of the great botanical iconographies" Lazarus and Pardoe p. 43. The present portrait appeared as a frontispiece to the Plantae selectae. Trew founded the periodical Commercium litterarium ad rei et medicinae scientiae naturalis one of the first general medical journals and from 1743 served as director of the Kaiserlich-Leopoldinisch-Carolingischen Akademie der Naturforscher. Trew's scientific correspondence numbering over 19000 letters is the largest such collection known; his natural history library of 34000 volumes is now at the University of Erlangen.
