Basel of course was an important publishing place and authors such as Zwinger have numerous entries. Revolutionary-era sermon dedicated to George Washington in which Duché urges the people of Philadelphia to stand fast despite the unnaturalness of being in conflict with their fellow British subjects. "We venerate the Parent Land from whence our progenitors came.But if we are to judge from the late ungenerous and ill-digested plans of policy which have been adopted by those whom she hath entrusted with the powers of Administration we cannot but think that they began to be jealous of our rising glory and from an ill-grounded apprehension of our aiming at independency were desirous of checking our growth." <br /> <br /> Jacob Duché 1737-98 was born in Philadelphia and educated there before studying at Cambridge University. He returned to Philadelphia and eventually became rector of Christ Church. His early zeal for the revolutionary cause was such that he was appointed chaplain to the Continental Congress. After the Declaration of Independence and the capture of Philadelphia by General Howe Duché had a change of heart and wrote George Washington asking him to urge Congress to recall the Declaration and negotiate a peace. He was branded a traitor by his former followers and went into exile in Great Britain before returning to his beloved Philadelphia in 1792 to live out his final years. <br /> <br /> This sermon first published in Philadelphia in 1775 the same year as this first British edition. This copy with provenance to American Loyalist Anglican minister Thomas Bradbury Chandler who had been exiled in London since 1775 after threats by the Sons of Liberty. Jacob Le Duchat 1658-1735 was a French literary scholar whose 1711 edition of the works of Rabelais was the first to include historical and critical commentary. His very numerous notes are remarkable and are still worthy of most serious consideration. He was the first to offer useful elucidations and these have been repeated after him and with good reason will continue to be so. Plenck is probably best remembered for his system of dermatological calssification explained in his Doctrina de morbis cutaneis of 1776 but his talents were extensive as can be witnessed in this less well-known work. The portrait is of Giovanni Alessandro Brambilla to whom the work is dedicated. This work was obviously also found unusually interesting when it was published the second edition appearing just a year after the first and apparently being a direct reprint of the first with just the date changed - in effect a second issue rather than a true second edition. Page 1<br /> <br /> Rev. & Dear Sir<br /> <br /> After I had wrote my letter of Nov'r 1st in answer to yours of Aug't 12th which will probably accompany this I was told that it was not likely there wd. be an opportunity to Halifax till the Spring but as I am certified of an opportunity now presenting I will trouble you w'th another Letter to let you know how much I am at your service and that I have a feeling sympathizing heart for my distressed Brethren in America wishing most ardently that it was in my power to contribute anything to alleviate yours & others' sufferings and to reward that merit which most of our Clergy thank God are justly entitled to.<br /> But whatever Neglects we must here let us remember that our Reward is on high and let this animate us to Fidelity & Faithfulness and Perseverance therein under every Temptation & thro' every Trial.<br /> <br /> We have had Sir a long gloomy Day of Sufferings but for my part I cannot but think what I sincerely hope that the worst is past. I think I can discern some Vestiges or Symptoms of some fortunate Events for this Nation & some convincing tokens of Causes which will re-establish the British Monarchy & revive the Lustre of the British Government. In a word I think the Day is approaching & to my naked Eye it don't appear to be distant when Rebellion will fall like Lightning from Heaven.<br /> <br /> The Parliament Sir is lately convened. The-<br /> <br /> Page 2<br /> <br /> The first opening of it seems to be something ominous to the patriotic Faction; a Noble Lord & one of the chief speakers on the side of opposition in the House of Peers suddenly departed this Life at scarcely an Hour's warning two Days after the Parliament met. Mr. Ch. J. Fox whose oratorical abilities are well known was wounded in a duel & came near as I did learn to lose his Life about the same time. These Events together with the failure of all the Prophecies in the republican Papers - the Disasters of D'Estaing in his Fleets being wrecked & dispersed in a storm - The safety of the W. India Islands particularly Jamaica which was long ago announced to be taken - The inefficiency of the Spanish operations against Gibraltar - the great sickness & mortality which has carried off Thousands in the Camp of the Spaniards - the dissension between the Spaniards & French Admirals - the brave conduct of Sir Charles Hardy in maintaining the Sovereignty of the Channel & even riding triumphantly before Brest in spite of the Navy of France & Spain united - the Feuds & Animosities prevailing among the Rebels of America which betoken the Decline of their short lived Empire &c.<br /> <br /> These things Sir I say have greatly chagrined the Members of Opposition & have sunkly abated the matter whereupon they used to display their Eloquence in the Senate.<br /> <br /> You will excuse my enlarging here for having wrote you once before I did not intend a long Letter when I sat down but wd. only set you an Example if it may be allowed I who am professedly your Senior-<br /> <br /> Page 3<br /> <br /> -to do as I have done to miss no opportunity of writing to me which will afford much pleasure for I have few Correspondents these Days in America.<br /> <br /> Present my respectfull compliments to Mr. Weeks - he may depend upon it I shall not trouble him w'th writing to him; I wd. not have it too well known that I wrote to so many which I seldom have. I cannot think Mr. Th- & his Party will be so unwise as to create any trouble to him when they know that he is properly appointed Missionary of Annapolis & that the People must have him or none.<br /> <br /> Joseph Patten Esq. formerly an active man in that Mission and Representative for that County I think you must inasmuch as he once told me that he had often attended your Ministry. When you write let me know whether he be living & what part he takes in affairs publick & Parochial or write to him by Mr. Weeks.<br /> <br /> If you know Doctor Jeffries of Boston who lives at Halifax I think please to make my compliments to him & tell him that Capt. Hall Master of the Ship in which we went from London to Boston in 1769 is a Prisoner in France. He was taken in the Andromeda Man of War was next in Command to Capt. This is the first edition of the sixth book in Jacob Leupold's remarkable Theatrum Machinarum series. In these books Leupold endeavored to produce an encyclopedic summary of mechanical technology. In doing so he produced a remarkable well-illustrated record of the technologies of the time. ""Leupold's work was characterized by a pronounced utilitarian thinking since for him his machine designs were primarily intended to raise prosperity in his country. His main goal was not the higher theoretical demand but the effectiveness and the most econimically sensible construction and operation of his equipment"". Price reflects condition. At the time of listing the lowest priced market offering using Vialibri is approximately $2000 USD. This copy's paper does have water-staining and other condition deficiencies but it is complete somewhat repaired and in a handsome binding. 17595054"Publick Instrument of Protest" written by "Notary Publick" Nesbitt detailing Captain Taylor's intended voyage from Boston to Gibraltar in which the sloop Little Betsey acquired multiple leaks in transit and cargo was not able to be delivered. Other parties involved were Robert Hosea or Hosey and John Godard. Three liquid stains that moderately effect text see image. Small losses at folds of paper and left edge. Doc tape connecting top and bottom halves at middle fold. Light transfer of ink to left edge from being previously folded. 12 1/2 x 15 3/4 inches.
