Joseph Jakob von Plenck's 'Doctrina de morbis veneris' 1779 is the venereology counterpart to his famous 'Doctrina de morbis cutaneis' and one of the earliest systematic Latin handbooks devoted specifically to venereal diseases written from the perspective of an 18th-century Vienna-based clinician. It is important because it applies an Enlightenment-era classificatory and nosological framework to venereal diseases at a time when "morbus gallicus" and related conditions were still conceptually fluid. By systematizing syphilis gonorrhoea and other venereal affections into defined classes and species he helped move venereology from a predominantly empirical-practical art toward a more theoretically ordered branch of special pathology parallel to what he achieved for skin diseases. In the broader history of dermatology the 1779 first edition stands as an early link between cutaneous medicine and venereology in Central Europe foreshadowing the later 19th-century fusion of "Haut- und Geschlechtskrankheiten" as a combined specialty. 1775032819<p>London: T Payne; P Elmsly; B White; and J Walter 1775 A very good 3 volume set with 29 plates some text engravings and 3 maps as called for in contemporary full calf bindings. Jacob Bryant 1715-1804 is chiefly known for this work which attempts to link the mythologies of the world to stories and events in the book of Genesis. It was seen as an important publication and is credited with influencing the work of William Blake. Blake was apprenticed to the engraver James Basire whose name appears at the bottom of most of the plates and is believed to have worked on them. The bindings are in very good clean condition and have been rebacked at some point retaining the original spines with gilt decorative compartments and red title labels. The boards are in very good condition with some corner wear. The marbled endpapers look to be contemporary with repair at the joints. There is the armorial bookplate of William Orme Foster 1814-1899 to the front pastedowns. He was an iron and coal-master owning the firm of John Bradley and Co and was MP for South Staffordshire 1857-68. All 3 volumes have page markers and all page edges have been yellowed. Volumes I & II are 2nd edition; Vol III is a 1st. Vol I: half title; title; preface pp v-xvii; blank; plate list p xix; text 1-516 with 10 'plates' of which the final is un-numbered and inserted at the end of the text. Vol II: half title; title; plate list pp iii-vi; text pp 1-535 with 19 plates one by Cipriani and one by Chambars - the final plate un-numbered and at the end of the text. Vol III: half title; title 1776; preface pp v-viii; text pp 1-601 with 3 maps 2 of which are folding and one of which is credited to Basire. There is a final engraving before the Finis. Contents are in very good condition. The occasional page is toned and there is very occasional spotting mostly on the final blanks. There is offsetting from the plates only one of which is tissue-guarded. The offsetting affects pages before and after the plate. There are a couple of ink amendments to mistypes in Vol III. Fold marks minor edge wear otherwise a very good copy in very crisp dark impression.<br /></p><p>Rare large-format engraved print produced in 1730 as part of the celebrations of the 200th anniversary of the Augsburg Confession 1530 one of the foundational documents of Lutheranism. The subject of the print is the famous Tranquebar Mission in southern India which was established by King Frederick IV of Denmark 1671-1730 and led by the German missionaries Bartholomäus Ziegenbalg 1682-1719 and Heinrich Plütschau 1676-1752 who are noted for having translated the Bible into Tamil and arranged for its printing.</p><p>The engraving executed by Johann Jacob Kleinschmidt after a design by Elias Riedinger is a splendid example of 18th-century Augsburg printmaking. It takes as its compositional conceit a church altar surmounted by a framed retable. The image above the altar depicts the German missionaries preaching to an audience of natives; in the background of this scene can be glimpsed a statue of 'Biruma oder Brama' Brahma. The elaborately carved frame of the retable is enlivened with vignettes illustrating the successes of the Lutheran mission e.g. an Indian smashing an idol a native being baptized a domesticated elephant symbolizing the people under God's yoke etc.</p><p>Placed atop the altar are oval portraits of Ziegenbalg and Plütschau their names written in Tamil and the books they translated an Indian bible an Indian catechism and an Indian hymnal. A map of southern India hangs on the front face of the altar. Flanking the altar are two young natives: the boy on the left holds the Danish Royal arms and the boy on the right displays the architectural plan of the New Jerusalem Church in Tranquebar built by the Germans and dedicated in 1719. In front of the altar are fallen symbols of the old dispensation. At the foot of the sheet is a poem in Latin and German celebrating the expansion of the Lutheran faith to all corners of the world.</p><p>The engraving is one of several quite ambitious broadside prints produced in Augsburg to commemorate the bicentennial of the Augsburg Confession some of which apparently reproduced paintings executed for the occasion. These rather disparate graphic productions were collected by Johann Michael Roth in 1730/31 and released as a small-edition composite volume with an added engraved title page reading <i>Augspurgisches Iubel-Gedächtnüs</i>. The contents of this rather odd production vary greatly from copy to copy. Kleinschmidt's <i>Vorstellung der Evangelisch-Ost-Indischen Kirche</i> engraving apparently was a commercial success because in 1736 citing demand he released a small-format version of the work its composition slightly altered.</p><p>OCLC locates U.S. examples of the <i>Augspurgisches Iubel-Gedächtnüs</i> at Illinois Duke Getty Stanford Princeton Yale Harvard Emory Concordia Seminary and Cal. Before the Revolution access to legal knowledge was often guarded by the elite. Giles Jacob one of the 18th century's most prolific legal minds sought to change that. While his peers wrote for the bench and bar Jacob wrote for "All Manner of Persons." He was a legal idealist who believed that a society is only as just as its citizens are informed-a philosophy clearly reflected in this landmark publication. While the work saw ten successful editions in London between 1736 and 1788 this 1768 New York printing marks a pivotal. unknown

A classic German treatise on wood-frame architecture and construction with applications in a variety of architectural designs among them roofs cupolas draw-bridges suspension bridges and importantly circular staircases with emphasis on techniques for building trusses strut frames beams and rafters. Examples given include St. Peter's and the Pons Senatorius in Rome St. Egidien Church in Nürenbers the Church of the Assumption in Paris illustrating structures of the ancient world and well as modern German French and Italian construction.<br /> Johnann Jacob Schübler 1689-1741 was trrained in the arts and engraving and produced works on architectural theory and practice military engineering and other subjects. His Sciagraphica Artis Tignariae 1736 illustrated construction designs from Russia Japan and China. Some offsetting from text throughout otherwise remarkably clean with little foxing. Bookplate of Mark Edward Andrews loosely inserted. Jacob Leupold 1674-1727 was a German physicist mathematician instrument maker and engineer who was credited as an early inventor of the air pump. Leupold started his work on the Theatrum Machinarum in 1720 which was the first systematic analysis of mechanical engineering. This volume deals with bridge construction and was the first book on bridge building published in Germany. The first major treatise on bridge building was by French engineer Hubert Gautier Traité des Ponts 1716 which was the standard book for bridge building for 70 years Britannica.
