The city view of Geneva p. 148 shows the original wall at the city entrance. Spon was a numismatist thus his interest is shown p. 107 with a plate devoted to early coinage of the city. The frontispiece features a view of Geneva with Saint Pierre Cathedral as a focal point. That cathedral dates from 1150 and was founded in the 4th century. / With this text one learns of the origin of the name for the city of Geneva derived from the Latin word for the Juniper shrub which populated the hilly regions there. Jagen and has the original fold lines strengthened on the verso with some light tissue paper. text below very legible. The Holy Land with lovely cartouche of Jesus rising above the group with sml insets of his birth and crucifixion. 17 1/2 x 12" & sml. margins. Rubbing exposing the cardboard at joints headcaps corners and edges. External edges and corners bumped Collection of poetry on marriage composed for the future wedding of Elizabeth of Bohemia. This queen then aged 25 had studied philosophy from her earliest youth - Descartes whom she had chosen as her master dedicated The Principles of Philosophy to her with this praise: ""The first and most learned of his disciples"" - and feared that her approaching nuptials would harm her studies. The work contains 14 poems in verse on marriage all in a rather satirical and comic vein the union of Adam and Eve polygamy. 9 by Caspar Barleus 4 by Boyus and one by Cats who undertook to produce the edition. This is followed by a section consisting of philosophical dialogues on the virtues of marriage and weddings. As a historical note Elizabeth's union was a failure and the Queen of Bohemia chose to end her days as an abbess in a Protestant monastery. The whole forms a quite remarkable curiosity. A scholar who accumulated titles throughout his life he was poet laureate historian theologian archaeologist and pastor as well as Imperial Count Palatine Knight of the Order of the Golden Spur and Roman Citizen Comes sacri Palatii et Consistorii imperialis Eques Auratus et Civis Romanus. Grasser dedicated this work to his travelling companions Lucas Liechtenhan and Georg Eckenstein. His peregrinations across early seventeenth-century Europe brought him to witness several landmark events of his age among them the execution in 1606 of Henry Garnet one of the conspirators in the notorious Gunpowder Plot. Pastiche binding in brown percaline brown shagreen lettering-piece marbled paper boards with a mottled pattern. Lettering-piece rubbed and lifting at the lower left corner; headcaps board edges and corners very slightly worn. Two tears to the upper portion of the title-page marginally affecting the text; browning and a stain in the margin of the same leaf. A fine copy otherwise. Two stamps to the title-page one armorial the other from the library ""V. Rhedigersch. Stadtbibliothek Breslau."" ""During the three years Grasser spent at Nîmes as a professor at the Collège des Arts he had ample time to study our antiquities and examine them first-hand; accordingly his descriptions and transcriptions are generally accurate at least in the relative sense that the word carried in the sixteenth century. He appends the following description to the two lines of our inscription: In superiori huius tabulæ parte radius quo textores utuntur; inferiore autem forfex visitur; adeo ut liqueat mechanicas artes apud veteres honorifice habitas fuisse p. 76. The term tabula used by Grasser is well chosen and proves that he had seen the stone in person. It is in fact a stele of cold stone no more than a decimetre in thickness.""
