Dagegen ist von dem eigentlichen chemischen Verfahren hinsichtlich der Ausmittelung des Giftes selbst nur das Allgemeine und von dem Speciellen blos die Arsenik-Vergiftung als die am häufigsten vorkommende aufgenommen und zwar auch nur aus dem Grunde um dem gerichtlichen Arzte und Rechtsgelehrten ein Bild zu geben von Dem was die Chemie bei der gerichtlich-chemischen Untersuchung zu leisten hat. Ist diese vollendet und ihr Resultat dem Arzte übergeben dann tritt erst dieser wieder in seine Rechte ein und giebt sein medicinisches Gutachten auf die Ergebnisse des chemischen Befundes basirt den Gerichten ab. Daß aber die Bearbeitung des chemischen Theils insofern ein solcher nach den eben entwickelten Ansichten in dem Lehrbucbe mit aufgenommen worden von dem lieben Freunde und Collegen des Verfassers Friedr. Wöhler gütigst übernommen worden erkennt nicht allein der Verfasser höchst dankbar an sondern werden mit ihm auch alle Leser dem ausgezeichneten Chemiker Dank wissen. Jacob Belville delivered at the dedication of the Hatborough Monument on December 5 1861 Bucks County Pennsylvania to commemorate the May 1 1778 Revolutionary War "Battle Of The Crooked Billet" which took place when Brigadier General John Lacey’s American detachment was surprised at daybreak and put to flight by Col. Abercrombie’s British regulars and Major Simcoe’s Queen’s Rangers. Twenty-eight Americans were killed many of them cruelly burned alive as they attempted to hide in haystacks and wheat fields of neighboring farms. A stirring and impassioned speech delivered at the outset of the Civil War pleading for the preservation of the Union which Revolutionary War heroes had fought and died for. Also contains a full account of the dedication proceedings names and titles of all speakers a detailed description of the monument and its engraved inscriptions and a biography of General Lacey who was paradoxically a Quaker. Bound in 3/4 leather with raised bands morocco spine label gilt titles marbled boards and marbled end papers. Original wraps bound in. Former copy of notable 19th century bibliophile Joseph Y. Jeanes 1859-1928 with his bookplate on the front pastedown. Affixed to blank pages at the back are a number of 19th century newspaper clippings relating to Crooked Billet consisting of three substantial histories of the battle; an eye witness account from a 97 year old Pennsylvanian who was 13 at the time; a Dec. 4 1861 clipping from a Philadelphia newspaper giving notice of the dedication ceremony; a short newspaper biography of General Lacey; and a number of newspaper clippings with photos of the Hatborough monument. A handwritten notation at the front of the volume reads "newspaper clippings added by Jos. Y. Janes 1898." Ownership signature of Helene F. Darlington great-great-great granddaughter of General Lacey on the front pastedown. Ms. Darlingtons’ great-great grandfather noted Pennsylvania author and congressman Dr. William P. Darlington 1782-1863 was General Lacey’s son-in-law and a principal speaker at the Monument dedication ceremony that day in 1861. Very Good. First gathering detached comprised of the front marbled end paper the two front blank end papers and the front wrap. Front board hinge cracked for a length of 3 1/4" down from the top. Published in the United States by Lippincott Philadelphia and Scribner New York but dates not ascertained. The "memoir" contains reports of the past meetings of the British Chess Association the arrangements for the 1862 congress a general account of the tournament. There follow the 177 games with brief notes and 23 other games including consultation games and a selection from the problem tourney incorporating a number of self-mates and end-game studies. The tournament of 1862 had been promoted by the British Chess Association whose history was as follows: Before modern traveling facilities were invented it had been felt that country clubs were too much isolated. The members played with the same opponents year in and year out; they opted the style and peculiarities of their one best player; enjoyed few opportunities of measuring themselves with those outside their immediate circle and scarcely knew what first-class play really was. This did not suit the views of the enthusiasts and in 1840 a number of zealous Yorkshire players conceived the idea of mustering a number of clubs for what seemed to their minds a grand carnival - a whole day's play. Out of this was developed the Yorkshire Chess Association and from it in due time the British Chess Association. The meeting of 1862 was the eight held under its auspices the seventh having assembled at Bristol a year before. The minimum rate of play was slow twenty moves in two hours but yet it was enacted that the game shall be played out at a sitting. Time was measured by sand-glasses. The chess clock which was first suggested by Blackburne had not yet come into existence. For the first time at this tournament every player played at least one game with each competitor. The prizes were won by Adolf Anderssen £100 Louis Paulsen £50 John Owen £30 George Alcock MacDonnell £15 Serafino Dubois £10 and Wilhelm Steinitz £5 who was awarded the brilliancy prize for his win over Augustus Mongredien.
