First edition of the French translation of a classic mineralogical work by the Swedish chemist Jöhns Jacob Berzelius 1779-1848. "The methods of mineral classification existing at the time were based on appearance and physical properties. These seemed highly unsystematic to Berzelius. He concluded from his analytical experience that a logical classification could be based only on chemical composition. In his original system first published in 1814 he arranged the minerals in terms of their basic constituents although he later revised this and placed chief emphasis on the acid component" DSB. The book opens with a dedication to the French mineralogist René Just Haüy and a brief preface. In the main text Berzelius sets out his development of a new system for classifying minerals according to their chemical structure. The second half of the book sets out these new classes orders families and genera. Also known as Caspari Jacobi Christiani Reuvens Gaspard Jacob Chrétien Reuvens Casparus Jacobus Christianus Reuvens and Kaspar Jakob Christian Reuvens. Studied law and classics in Amsterdam and Leiden but became interested in archaeology during a stay in Paris. He was appointed first director of the Leiden Museum of Antiquities and first professor of archaeology in the Netherlands Leiden University 1818-1835. It was Reuvens who transformed the mediocre archaeological cabinet of Leiden University to the National Museum of Antiquities of the Netherlands. Backed by King William I he acquired the successive collections of De Lescluze Cimba and Anastasi as well as numerous classical collections. Among his books are "Epimetrum de quibusdam monumentis cum Pollionis historia conjunctis" 1820; and "Periculum animadversionum archaeologicarum ad cippos Punicos Humbertianos Musei Antiquarii Lugduno-Batavi" 1822. Antoine-Jean Letronne 1787-1848 was a French archaeologist director of the Ecole des Chartes and inspector-general of the University of France. Paper received May 1 - Read May 23 1867. "Abstracts of a considerable portion of this paper have been already published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society for June 18 1857 and June 20 1861 under the title of "Notes of Researches on the Intimate Structure of the Brain." After adding several new facts and giving further explanations on the subject of the medulla oblongata the author gives a full description of the morphological changes by which the auditory and other centres are developed out of elements of the spinal cord. The auditory centres consist of an outer and an inner nucleus. The outer nucleus is developed from the grey substance of the posterior pyramid and restiform body of the medulla. The inner nucleus arises between the posterior pyramid and the nucleus of the eighth cerebral nerve. From both these nuclei the posterior division of the auditory nerve takes its origin. The anterior division consists of two portions. The principal portion penetrates the medulla beneath the restiform body and running along the outer side of the caput cornu or grey tubercle enters both the outer and inner nucleus. The other portion of the nerve runs backward along the upper border of the restiform body which it accompanies over the superior peduncle of the cerebellum to the inferior vermiform process. The outer auditory nucleus consisting of the grey substance of the posterior pyramid and restiform body is ultimately thrown backward into the cerebellum part of it arching over the fourth ventricle to the opposite side while the rest extends outward to the corpus dentatum of the cerebellum." Das Gymnasium absolvierte er bereits in Prag. Anschließend studierte er an der medizinischen Fakultät der Karl-Ferdinand-Universität in Prag mit dem Schwerpunkt Psychiatrie. Im Jahr 1841 schloss er sein Studium ab und trat in die Prager Anstalt für Geisteskranke ein wo er als Sekundärarzt von Prof. MUDr. J. B. Riedl tätig war. Ab 1850 wurde er mit der Leitung der gesamten Anstalt betraut. Ende des Jahres 1851 kam es zu Veränderungen in der Leitung der Anstalt die Jakob Fischel zum Ausscheiden aus der Anstalt veranlassten. Bis zum Jahr 1869 widmete er sich ausschließlich seiner Privatpraxis. Im Jahr 1870 wurde Fischel nach der Pensionierung von MUDr. Frantisek Köstel zum zweiten Mal mit der vorübergehenden Leitung der Anstalt beauftragt. Im Jahr 1871 wurde ein Auswahlverfahren ausgeschrieben das Dr. med. Fischel gewann. Im Jahr 1873 wurde er zum Professor für Psychiatrie ernannt. Er leitete die Prager Anstalt ununterbrochen bis 1885 als er aus der Anstalt ausschied. Bei seiner Pensionierung erhielt er die höchste Auszeichnung für seine vorbildliche Leitung der Anstalt. Im Jahr 1853 veröffentlichte er seine einzige größere Monografie "Prager Irrenanstalt und ihr Wirken". Zu seinen Schülern gehörten beispielsweise Dr. med. Arnold Pick und Dr. med. Benjamin Cumpelík. Jacob Fischel verstarb nach kurzer Krankheit im Alter von 79 Jahren am 5. Juni 1892 in Prag. unknown

Hermann Stieda: "Ich komme nun zu der bekannten Arbeit von Tschudi welcher als erster darauf hinwies dass derartige Bildungen einem bestimmten Volksstamme besonders eigentümlich seien. Er fand dass an den Schädeln verschiedener alter Peruanerstämme fast immer eine ganze oder teilweise Trennung der Schuppe in zwei Teile vorkommt und zwar in ein oberes Stück das er Os interparietale nennt und in ein unteres Stück. Die Trennungslinie verläuft in Form einer Quernaht etwas oberhalb der Linea semicircularis superior und mündet beiderseitig seitlich in den Vereinigungswinkel des Schläfenbeines mit dem Hinterhauptsbein also in die sogenannte Casser'sche oder seitliche hintere Fontanelle. Diese Trennungslinie soll in. den ersten Monaten nach der Geburt immer vorhanden sein; es tritt dann zuerst in der Mitte eine Verwachsung ein und bei erwachsenen Individuen fand Tschudi oft nur noch einen seitlichen Rest der Naht immer aber eine deutliche Furche an der früheren Nahtstelle. Tschudi schlägt für den oberen Knochenteil den Namen "Os Ingae oder Incae" vor und diese Bezeichnung hat sich noch bis heute teilweise erhalten." Baltimore 1836. </p><p>Only Edition of "an abridgement of a large work by the same author which has been highly approved and for which among others the following testimonial has been obtained." according to a pink "Printed Advertisement" pasted inside front cover bearing a testimonial from officers of the Bank of the United States November 18 1834. At the bottom of that slip Gillmeyer offers a $300.00 reward to anyone who can find the "first fair detection of an error of ONE CENT in the interest calculations." The author's "large" work of 53-pages is <i>Banking Time Tables in twelve series </i>Washington D. C.: 1834. The Gillmeyer family was from Emmitsburg Maryland and a Jacob is listed as having been a Midshipman on Sloop <i>Erie</i>during the War of 1812 and as a teacher at St. Mary's Emmitsburg 1827-1833 and living in Baltimore in 1834. Unless we miscounted the title runs to 213 words! A handsome little book in a appealing binding and scarce. Slight occasional foxing. <b>OCLC </b>locates two copies Univ. Michigan; Univ. Virginia.
