Octavo 8" x 5 1/4" bound in publisher's original brown cloth with gilt design and lettering to spine with pictorial in gilt on cover decorative cover blind stamped cover with ruled edges. First edition. "Far West" in the United States in 1856 was generally meant the states east of the Mississippi River. The only states west of the river were Texas and California the rest were still territories. It was around this time period that the lumbering was taking a foothold in Michigan that spiraled into a lumbering boom that last for about four decades. Map drawn by E.F. Beadle and published by Miller Orton & Mulligan. This map interesting and infrequently offered extends from Ohio to the Rocky Mountains north of the Ohio River and shows Nebraska Territory created in 1854 west of Minnesota and north of Kansas. Kansas extends to the Rocky Mountains and includes the regions allocated to the Arapahos & Cheyennes. The Indian Territory is indicated for the Cherokees. Original outline color with red showing railroad detail extending west to Iowa City. Condition: Some sunning and staining on covers a bit of wrinkling to cloth on lower edge of front cover. Corners and extremities bumped with some wear. Minor loss on head and tail. Ink ownership signature on front free endpaper. Damp-staining on preliminary sheets including folding map. Map with tears creasing cellophane tape repairs and some fold separations. A good copy which is very good internally. Miller, Orton, and Mulligan. E.F. Beadl hardcover

All illustrations called for in the list are present though a few are inserted a leaf or two off from their called-for locations. A sound unrestored example about very good in the publisher's brown cloth with black glossy cloth spine. Spine worn with an end-to-end razor-thin vertical slice and old tape repairs to the crown. Though unsightly the binding is still rather crisp. A few internal leaves a bit loosened but intact. Mild scattered foxing though most leaves remain very bright indeed. Delightful contemporary Columbus bookseller ticket on the front paste-down for "Hubbard & Jones". A scarce and important volume of Columbus OH history. A kind of enhanced directory with essays and narratives about Columbus history present business and government activities and the like. The engraved illustrations are well-executed giving a very clear picture of some of the major Columbus sights and institutions of the day a number of which are still standing. The tissue folding map which has only a marginal tear at the hinge almost inevitable for such a fragile document is a bird's eye view of downtown Columbus as it appeared in 1873. Many dozens--perhaps more than a hundred--advertisements are located within the text and also on the endpapers. Studer a printer and publisher was also an ornithologist and his best-known work was "The Birds of North America" known colloquially as "the poor man's Audubon." Published in small folio format the work was illustrated with over 100 chromolithograph plates. OCLC records are hopelessly muddled as digital holdings and physical holdings are listed under the same accession number. Suffice it to say that the digital holdings likely outnumber the physical holdings by a significant margin. The last copy we could trace in commerce was a rebacked example offered in 1982.
