Greene. <br> This work describes the plants found within a ten mile radius of Boston and remained the standard work on the subject until Gray's Manual appeared in 1848. Bigelow's primary career was as a physician in Boston where he succeeded James Jackson he also served as professor of materia medica at Harvard Medical School from 1815-1855. The present work was to prove to be the first of a number of publications that punctuated a highly active career in both botany and medicine.
