17329392<p>This is a great condition antique botanical print framed and hand-colored on handmade "laid" paper. Original 1732 copperplate engraving by Johann Jakob Jacob Dillenius. 1732 1st edition limited to 250 copies from Dillenius's two-volume botanical work "Hortus Elthamensis." The engraving is titled "Geranium batrachioides Bohem capsules nigris hirsutis" and has been colored by hand. Decorative gold frame with a wire securely attached at the back for hanging. A highly attractive piece perfectly suitable for display. The frame measures 17 3/4" tall x 16" wide. Professionally framed by "Einhorn Galleries - Antique Maps Rare Prints Historic Documents" in Connecticut per the label on the back. The Gallery has affixed a typed summary of the piece on the back see photo. Jakob Dillenius was a prominent German-born botanist who became the first Sherardian Professor of Botany at the University of Oxford in 1734. He is recognized for his meticulous botanical illustrations and for pioneering the study of "lower plants" like Mosses and fungi. His two volume work "Hortus Elthamensis" 1732 was a catalog of rare plants in the Eltham Garden of James Sherard. Dillenius drew and engraved all 324 plates himself. This is the first edition of the sixth book in Jacob Leupold's remarkable Theatrum Machinarum series. In these books Leupold endeavored to produce an encyclopedic summary of mechanical technology. In doing so he produced a remarkable well-illustrated record of the technologies of the time. ""Leupold's work was characterized by a pronounced utilitarian thinking since for him his machine designs were primarily intended to raise prosperity in his country. His main goal was not the higher theoretical demand but the effectiveness and the most econimically sensible construction and operation of his equipment"". Price reflects condition. This copy's paper does have water-staining and other condition deficiencies but it is complete somewhat repaired and in a handsome binding. Signed at the bottom left corner by 3 witnesses. Page 2 is blank. Page 3 is more of the printed legal document with no hand writing. Small holes at the fold intersections. Page 4 is mostly blank with exception of hand written note "Jacob Metz's Bond L433 6.8 payl July 30th 1779"<br /> <br /> Styner spelled Steiner in online research and Cist were early German printers in Philadelphia. They formed a printing business in 1779 and dissolved it in 1781. They were responsible for printing the first issue of Philadelphisches Staatsregiste"r published July 21 1779. By then it may have been the only German language paper in America. After 1781 Steiner went on to publish Gemeinnützige. During the American Revolution they published many documents relating to current events including Paine's The American Crisis. Witnesses were Mr Bernard Jacob De la Faille and Miss Catharina Castelein. The document is signed by the minister of the Dutch Reformed Church at Batavia Gerradus Piekenbroek and dated Batavia 18 October 1746. Bernard Jacob Mauregnault started his career in Surinam; his passport of the West India Company dated 1760 is kept in the Amsterdam City Archives.In very good condition. unknown

A very good and attractive set in clean condition bound in original calf with gilt decorated rules to covers and gilt decoration to spine panels with six compartments and red and black labels.<br /> <br /> § Second edition of Vol. 1 and 2 1775 and only edition of Vol. 3 1796. The three maps are lacking. All other illustrations are present in good condition but including usual offsetting and a few showing minor mottling and browning. Plate XI stated in the List of Plates to be a Bartolozzi engraved plate designed by Cypriani from an original onyx Camaio by the Greek artist Tryphon is the correct plate although in fact it bears no plate No. and the imprint "G. B. Cipriani Del I.K. Sherwin Sculp." Although Bartolozzi normally signs his studio's plates J. K. Sherwin was an apprentice of Bartolozzi's and presumably was allowed to sign his engraving in this instance. The plate's design matches "The Marriage of Eros and Psyche" from Tryphon's Camaio in the Duke of Marlborough's Collection see e.g Wikipaedia: "The Marlborough Gem". Bentley BB 439. 1775032819<p>London: T Payne; P Elmsly; B White; and J Walter 1775 A very good 3 volume set with 29 plates some text engravings and 3 maps as called for in contemporary full calf bindings. Jacob Bryant 1715-1804 is chiefly known for this work which attempts to link the mythologies of the world to stories and events in the book of Genesis. It was seen as an important publication and is credited with influencing the work of William Blake. Blake was apprenticed to the engraver James Basire whose name appears at the bottom of most of the plates and is believed to have worked on them. The bindings are in very good clean condition and have been rebacked at some point retaining the original spines with gilt decorative compartments and red title labels. The boards are in very good condition with some corner wear. The marbled endpapers look to be contemporary with repair at the joints. There is the armorial bookplate of William Orme Foster 1814-1899 to the front pastedowns. He was an iron and coal-master owning the firm of John Bradley and Co and was MP for South Staffordshire 1857-68. All 3 volumes have page markers and all page edges have been yellowed. Volumes I & II are 2nd edition; Vol III is a 1st. Vol I: half title; title; preface pp v-xvii; blank; plate list p xix; text 1-516 with 10 'plates' of which the final is un-numbered and inserted at the end of the text. Vol II: half title; title; plate list pp iii-vi; text pp 1-535 with 19 plates one by Cipriani and one by Chambars - the final plate un-numbered and at the end of the text. Vol III: half title; title 1776; preface pp v-viii; text pp 1-601 with 3 maps 2 of which are folding and one of which is credited to Basire. There is a final engraving before the Finis. Contents are in very good condition. The occasional page is toned and there is very occasional spotting mostly on the final blanks. There is offsetting from the plates only one of which is tissue-guarded. The offsetting affects pages before and after the plate. There are a couple of ink amendments to mistypes in Vol III.
