Nach Schröcks Tod wurde er Präsident der Akademie und kaiserlicher Leibarzt. Er sammelte Pflanzen Mineralien und Versteinerungen und verfaßte über diese Petrefacten zwei Werke; cf. The engraving was first published in 1661 and the map shows Tasman's recent discoveries in Australia and Tasmania and depicts California as an island. Many discoveries from his second voyage remained otherwise unpublished until the end of the 17th century. The drawing of the floor was made by Jacob Vennekool who worked closely with Van Campen and since his drawings were first published even before the building was completed they may reflect Van Campen's plan more closely than the finished building itself. They also of course show it before the alterations made at various times in later years.Binding a little worn untrimmed otherwise in good condition. With a woodcut vignette on the title-page and typographical ornaments at the head of every page. The text is set in Roman and Syriac type. 64 1 1 blank pp. First edition of a Syriac grammar for beginners written by Jakob Georg Christian Adler 1756-1834. It starts with a short introduction to Syriac grammar and is followed by excerpts from works by two important Syrian Christian authors: Gregory Bar Hebraeus 1226-1286 a prominent writer and church figure and Jacob of Edessa 640-708 the bishop of Edessa and one of the most important scholars of the Christian-Aramean tradition.Adler was an Orientalist and Syriac language professor at the University of Copenhagen. He was also a Lutheran theologian and became the head of the Bible society in Schleswig-Holstein. He has written multiple works on Syriac and Arabic. With a paper label mounted at the head of the front wrapper and an annotation at the foot of page 17. The edges and corners of the wrapper show some signs of wear with some loss of material at the foot of the spine. With a tear in the lower margin of page 43 without affecting the text. Second Edition first 1783 of what Simon considers: "An unusually interesting book of dietetics and cookery describing the qualities of every possible kind of food and drink plants fungi animals fats and oils condiments wines and spirits tea coffee . etc." The text is in Latin but the German nomenclature is included. Plenck is probably best remembered for his system of dermatological calssification explained in his Doctrina de morbis cutaneis of 1776 but his talents were extensive as can be witnessed in this less well-known work. The portrait is of Giovanni Alessandro Brambilla to whom the work is dedicated. This work was obviously also found unusually interesting when it was published the second edition appearing just a year after the first and apparently being a direct reprint of the first with just the date changed - in effect a second issue rather than a true second edition. Leiden Samuel Lugtmans & Cornelius Haak 1741 but the pagination is continuous the supplement occupies pages 501-534. Incidentally there is a substantial unpaginated index placed between them of 60ff. The Catalogue of the University Library at Leyden has a certain air of modernity in its carefully listed holdings in theology jurisprudence medicine philosophy philology political economy history belles-lettres classics numismatics etc. A single chapter enumerates the celebrated collection of 1993 Oriental manuscripts in Persian Turkish Hebrew Armenian Coptic etc. Separate chapters list the special collections donated by Huygens Vossius Perizonius De Smet and others. Rare Brunet 31496 says that this is one of the most representative sources of Oriental manuscript holdings.</p>

Tseno Ureno sometimes called the Women's Bible is a Yiddish-language prose work whose structure parallels the weekly Torah portions and Haftorahs used in Jewish prayer services. The book was written by Jacob ben Isaac Ashkenazi 1550–1625 of Janów Lubelski near Lublin Poland and mixes Biblical passages with teachings from Judaism's Oral Torah such as the Talmud's Aggadah and Midrash which are sometimes called "parables allegories short stories anecdotes legends and admonitions" by secular writers. This is also evident in his other publications such as the Treatise of Laws 1721 The Common Law Common-Placed 1726 and Every Man His Own Lawyer 1736. With an engraved dedication also serving as a title-page and 16 unnumbered engraved views 15 x 18.5 cm. A complete set of sixteen views of the magnificent palace gardens mazes fountains sculpture ponds and pavilions of the Royal estate Het Loo near Apeldoorn in the Netherlands the most splendid country estate of King William III of England William of Orange. This estate was the finest example of Anglo-Dutch formal gardens garden art and architecture. Pieter Schenk I 1660-1711 originally published the present views in his six-part Paridisus oculorum 1702 where Het Loo was ''undoubtedly the highlight of the series'' Anglo-Dutch Garden p. 201. The six parts were also issued separately with the dedications to the owners serving as title-pages as is the case here.William of Orange 1650-1702 bought the medieval castle Het Loo in 1684 when he was Dutch head of state and it quickly became his favourite hunting lodge. He had it completely rebuilt under the architect Jacob Roman 1640-1716 beginning in 1686. When William and his wife Mary Stuart were crowned King and Queen of England in 1689 however work on the estate was greatly expanded on a royal scale with sculpture commissioned from Romeyn de Hooghe and the elaborate fountains and gardens shown in the present prints. By the time Schenk produced the present print series just before William's death in 1702 it was one of the world's grandest royal residences. The present set of Schenk's prints is watermarked Strasbourg Bend = IV similar to Heawood 73 & 78 from ca. 1720 so it may have been published by Pieter Schenk II soon after his father's death.The binding shows very slight traces of use. The leaves are very lightly foxed. With a full-page engraved plate with 6 figures an additional engraved folding plate by Busch 2 decorated woodcut initials a woodcut headpiece and a woodcut tailpiece. 36 1 1 blank pp. First and only edition of a treatise on the American Aloe Agave Americana with a very rare additional plate not present in any other copies of the work. This plate drawn by Busch who we have not been able to identify shows the spectacular blooming American aloe from the gardens of Köpenick Palace which was the largest American aloe in any royal garden at the time. It caused a sensation when it finally bloomed in 1712 after 44 years; even Tsar Peter the Great paid a visit to admire it. The present plate is not only one of the few contemporary images of the so-called "wunderaloe" miracle aloe but also one of the very few illustrations of any part of the Köpenick Palace gardens of the time.The present work is a comprehensive study of the American aloe. It was written by the German physician and botanist Christoph Jacob Trew 1695-1769 after observing a blooming aloe in Nuremberg in 1726. His treatise offers explanations for the plant's unusual growth as well as descriptions of its medicinal use. It is partly based on his own observations but also compiles the findings of other studies on the plant. The work contains meteorological tables in which Trew attempts to forecast the natural conditions for growing ripe Aloe seeds and an engraved plate with detailed illustrations of the flowers and seeds. The present copy also includes the final leaf with a note to page 8 which is not mentioned in the reference works.Trew studied medicine at the University of Altdorf graduating in 1717. He wrote his dissertation under the supervision of the surgeon and botanist Lorenz Heister 1683-1758. He became a physician in Nuremberg and also supervised the Hortus Medicus the medical university garden. After thorougkly studying the plants with the help of students he published several richly illustrated botanical works including Hortus nitidissimis omnem per annuum superbiens floribus 1750-1786 Plantae selectae quarum imagines ad exemplaria Londini 1750-1773 and Plantae rariores quas maximam partem ipse in horte domestico colui 1763.
