First edition.<br /><br />"Far West" in the United States in 1856 was generally meant the states east of the Mississippi River. The only states west of the river were Texas and California the rest were still territories. It was around this time period that the lumbering was taking a foothold in Michigan that spiraled into a lumbering boom that last for about four decades.<br /><br />Map drawn by E.F. Beadle and published by Miller Orton & Mulligan. This map interesting and infrequently offered extends from Ohio to the Rocky Mountains north of the Ohio River and shows Nebraska Territory created in 1854 west of Minnesota and north of Kansas. Kansas extends to the Rocky Mountains and includes the regions allocated to the Arapahos & Cheyennes. The Indian Territory is indicated for the Cherokees. Original outline color with red showing railroad detail extending west to Iowa City.<br /><br /><strong>Condition:</strong><br /><br />Some sunning and staining on covers a bit of wrinkling to cloth on lower edge of front cover. Corners and extremities bumped with some wear. Minor loss on head and tail. Ink ownership signature on front free endpaper. Damp-staining on preliminary sheets including folding map. The plates some of them cuttings from publications compliment and illustrate the text of the facing pages. Sixteen of the plates are in color including a two-fold symbolic battle scene by Rolandson. Of the 338 b/w illustrations two are folding plates. One of the Orchestra Organ in Westminster by W. & J. Walker and one of the Temple of Concord by J. Pass. <br /> <br /> The volumes contain engravings some printed to tissue paper lithographs drawings and woodcuts several of them fit into cutout framing or pasted to art paper. First Edition! HENRY JACOB BIGELOW 1818-90. - "As the dangers of surgical anesthesia became more well known Bigelow wrote a series of articles detailing these problems. To clarify some of the questions concerning the hazards of surgical anesthesia Bigelow also prepared a report for presentation to the members of the American Medical Association. This series of papers was later reprinted as a monograph entitled Ether and chloroform; their discovery and physiological effects Boston: D. Clapp 1848 G-M 5730." Rutkow Bigelow's speedy publication of Morton's discovery and his subsequent advocacy of ether as an anesthetic assured its adoption throughout the civilized world. The above work deals with the priority claims of Morton and Charles Thomas Jackson with Bigelow taking Morton's side in the dispute. Mussey had had extensive experience with chloroform and noted that his operations proceeded "without a single unpleasant effect in any case."
