This is the original edition of "Caspipina's Letters" with the final letter of the volume signed by "Tamoc Caspipina."<br /> Jacob Duché 1737-1798 was an American Episcopal clergyman known for his role in the early days of the American Revolution. He gained historical significance as the first chaplain to the Continental Congress and for delivering the opening prayer at the First Continental Congress in 1774. However in 1777 he defected to the British side and urged George Washington to negotiate peace with the British. Posthumously published is this monumental work on the internal and external diseases of the head by the famous Swiss anatomist J.L. Wepfer. Preceded by a biographical essay "Memora Wepferiana" written by the eminent physician J.C. Brunner the discoverer of the duodenal glands. Recording nearly 50 years' practice in neurological diseases the volume contains 222 case histories including several dealing with apoplexy the hemorrhagic nature of which had been discovered by Johann Jakob Wepfer 1620-1695. A copious index terminates the volume. "In his treatise Observationes medico-practicae de affectibus capitis internis et externis Medico-practical observations on the internal and external diseases of the head published posthumously by his grandchildren Bemhardin and Georg Michael Wepfer in 1727" "there were six observations about specific ear diseases. One concerned a long-standing cancer which had completely destroyed the auricle two were related to "unpleasant hearing" obauditio a difficult word to translate: it normally means obedience or unpleasant hearing. In medicine it sometimes means impaired hearing but also paracusis or head tinnitus and three discussed "ear tinnitus". Wepfer explained in particular that ear tinnitus accompanying diseases of the ear was due to the obstruction of air-flow from the ear by cerumen secretions or occlusion of the "canal which goes to the palate" i.e. Eustachian tube which could be easily demonstrated. If a healthy ear was occluded by a finger or if a drinking cup was held close to it a muffled sound was clearly perceived but individuals suffering from subjective noises did not hear any additional sound. He also observed that subjective noises could occur not only in ear disease but also in head disease such as hemicrania "obtuse head" "rotatory and staggering vertigo" and hysterical convulsions. Wepfer's therapy was as complicated as it was disputable. For example he advocated curing tinnitus by loud noises. This was supposed to remove from the ear the serous fluid causing tinnitus. Examples given include St. Peter's and the Pons Senatorius in Rome St. Egidien Church in Nürenbers the Church of the Assumption in Paris illustrating structures of the ancient world and well as modern German French and Italian construction.<br /> Johnann Jacob Schübler 1689-1741 was trrained in the arts and engraving and produced works on architectural theory and practice military engineering and other subjects. His Sciagraphica Artis Tignariae 1736 illustrated construction designs from Russia Japan and China. Enlarged issue of a very rare series of engraved views of Danish castles mansions houses gardens and city views by the Danish landscape painter Johan Jacob Bruun 1715-1789. It was first published in 1761 containing 50 views of buildings on the Danish island Zealand as the first volume of a planned series covering whole Denmark. The other volumes never appeared but 10 additional views were already engraved dated 1760-1762 and included in the present issue with all plates on the same French paperstocks.With plate numbers in manuscript on the back of the plates and some occasional faint thumbing in the margins. This catalogue of Swiss publications of 1701 with commentary and biographical details is arranged according to cantons where they were printed starting off with Zurich and ending with Geneva. Basel of course was an important publishing place and authors such as Zwinger have numerous entries. This present second edition of J. J. Scheuchzer's 1672-1733 scientific description of Switzerland is greatly enlarged and much rarer. The plates are mainly views and maps although there are also plates of geological profiles and samples scientific equipment and regional flora and fauna. From 1702 until 1711 Scheuchzer undertook yearly expeditions accompanied by friends and pupils. He was the first to systematically explore the Alps and became a pioneer in the fields of geology palaeontology and glaziology. The work offers historical details and together with Tschudi's chronicle it became one of the main sources for Schiller's "Wilhelm Tell". - A few tears in the folds of some maps and plates repaired. Second printing with some corrections after the first printing of the previous year of an early account of Lower California by the Jesuit Jacob Baegert. Baegert lived in Baja California from 1751 to 1768 and spent most of his time at the Mission of San Luis Gonzaga leaving after the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767. He provides important details on the culture of the Native Americans of the region including the Pericues Guiacuras and Cochiemes. Wagner states that the German Jesuits were especially dissatisfied toward the end of the Jesuit regime in California and Baegert's bitterness is evident in his book: ".it was a land full of ferocious beasts and even more ferocious Indians the soil was poor the water undrinkable and there was no fuel to be had." The fine and important map was made by a fellow Jesuit Ferdinand Consak and is described by Streeter as "most helpful in giving the location of the many Jesuit missions in Lower California. It also shows the route along the west coast of Mexico followed by Baegert in going to California in 1751 and his route out in 1768 after the expulsion of the Jesuits." The two plates apparently not issued with all copies depict male and female Californian Native Americans. Rare. The National Union Catalogue locates only three copies of the second issue. unknown

First published in 1740 with only 25 plates the present edition published posthumously represents the fullest realisation of the authors lifelong ambition bringing together his exquisitely engraved plates with additional material that was prepared but never published during his lifetime.In total the work comprises 33 engraved plates depicting 70 metamorphoses of butterflies moths and other winged insects each rendered with remarkable precision and enlivened by contemporary hand-colouring. The plates are notable not only for their scientific value representing a significant advance in the study of insect life cycles but also for their aesthetic brilliance combining delicate line engraving with vibrant colour and decorative botanical settings. Plate XII depicting a tulip is of particular charm. Houttuyn in his preface remarked upon the extraordinary patience and precision required for such studies noting that few enthusiasts possessed the dedication necessary to observe and record these transformations with accuracy. Published the same year as the first edition in quarto. This is the French reply to an English memorial addressed to the courts of Europe stating their position on the war on the Ohio justifying their actions and setting forth their claims to the region west of the Alleghenies. Accusing the English of unprovoked aggression and foul play the French sought to demonstrate that it was Washington's 'assassination' of Jumonville in the Fort Necessity campaign among other offensive actions which had sparked the war. Most of the text is composed of 'pièces justificatives' comprising documents and letters written between 1749 and 1755 by La Jonquière Governor of New France Albemarle Rouillé General Braddock Contrecoeur Villiers Sir William Johnson George Washington and Robert Stobo an engineer with Washington who had planned Fort Necessity. Among the more important papers are translations of the instructions given to Braddock by the British Crown letters to and from Braddock and Sir William Johnson and various officials two of Johnson's 'harangues' to the Indians and the first printing although in French translation of extracts from the journal kept by George Washington in the 1754 expedition to fortify the forks of the Ohio that ended with the British surrender to the French at Fort Necessity in July 1754 pp. 109-146. This is quite distinct from Washington's first journal of his mission for Governor Dinwiddie late in 1753 printed at Williamsburg in 1754. Most of these British papers were seized by the French following the capitulation at Fort Necessity. An early work on the French and Indian War described by Lawrence Wroth in his John Carter Brown Library report for 1945-46' as "one of the most important documents in American colonial history."
