Ancient Arabic coins and the early study of the Kufic script First edition of this well-illustrated work on ancient Arabic numismatics in Kufic script - "one of the works which traditionally mark the birth of Arabic palaeography" D'Ottone - studying and illustrating the renowned collection of antiquities of Cardinal Stefano Borgia 1731-1804. Jacob Georg Christian Adler 1756-1834 studied Coptic Syriac and Arabic manuscripts and artefacts across Europe. His introduction to this work summarizes the state of the art in the field of Arabic numismatics quoting sources based on the study of major collections of ancient Arabic coins in Italy Spain England Germany Holland and Denmark. He mentions important scholars in the field including the traveller Carsten Niebuhr who visited places in modern-day Yemen and Saudi Arabia. Adler discusses the origin antiquity and ornaments of Arabic coins reproducing the original Arabic inscriptions. He noted that Muslims do not represent the Prophet Muhammad and God figuratively; thus unlike in Europe Arabic coins also do not bear rulers' effigies. A section is devoted to observations on the Kufic script diacritics and other philological observations. The following sections provide textual descriptions of the Arabic inscriptions on the coins Adler examined including those of the Abbasid Fatimid Ayyubid Seleucid Turkman and Atabeg dynasties from the Middle East and Spain. He also examined Arabic coins produced by Christians especially in Sicily under King Roger and his successors and provides a bilingual text on Arabo-Islamic coins and their history taken from a manuscript at El Escorial a text on Arabic seals and another on Druze coins. The detailed plates reproduce the Kufic script 101 Arabic coins both sides 6 Arabic seals and Druze idols and monumental inscriptions. An extensive history of philosophy by the author whose five-volume Historia Critica Philosophiae formed the basis of William Enfield's The History of Philosophy the first English language history of philosophy to treat thinkers beyond ancient history Locke Newton Hobbes Leibniz Descartes etc. Brucker is known primarily for his massive Historia Critica Philosophiae 5 volumes 1742-44 with an Appendix 1767. Passmore calls that work "the standard history of philosophy in the 18th century to which both Kant and the Encyclopaedists for example were very considerably indebted." 'The Idea of a History of Philosophy' in The Historiography of the History of Philosophy 'S-Gravenhage 1965. The present work contains 28 papers divided into three sections: Historico-Philosophica pp. 1-257; Historico-Literaria pp. 258-552; and Philologico-Critica pp. 553-608. The nine "observations" of the first part deal mainly with ancient philosophy with papers on: "number" in Plato and Pythagorian philosophy Brucker's dissertation; Pyrrhonism; Stoicism; the Alexandrian School et al.; as well as "Supplementa ad historiam de ideis exhibens" pp. 110-147 a supplement to Brucker's first book 1723. The second part opens pp. 258-290 with a paper that contains the first printing of six letters from Leibniz to Spizel Ravier 435. This section many of whose subjects appear to have connections with Augsburg also includes observations on Melanchthon's Hypotyposes theologicae 1521 sketches of the lives of Brucker's mentor Philipp Jakob Crophius the humanist Hieronymous Wolf and his student David Hoeschel as well as biographical sketches of several physicians. Trew was the author of the lavishly illustrated Hortus nitidissimis omnem per annum superbiens floribus 1750-86 and Plantae selectae quarum imagines ad exemplaria naturalia Londini in hortis curiosorum nutrita 1750-73 both with plates engraved after drawings by the noted 18th century botanical artist Georg Dionysius Ehret; the latter work has been described as "one of the great botanical iconographies" Lazarus and Pardoe p. 43. The present portrait appeared as a frontispiece to the Plantae selectae. Trew founded the periodical Commercium litterarium ad rei et medicinae scientiae naturalis one of the first general medical journals and from 1743 served as director of the Kaiserlich-Leopoldinisch-Carolingischen Akademie der Naturforscher. Trew's scientific correspondence numbering over 19000 letters is the largest such collection known; his natural history library of 34000 volumes is now at the University of Erlangen. The present work includes a work on tropical medicine by Dutch physician Jacob de Bondt or Jacobus Bontius 1592-1631 which can only be found in the Dutch editions of Medicine Aegyptiorum and a text by Alpinus De rhapontico which can only be found in the present edition.Medicine Aegyptiorum was first published in Venice in 1591 then three times in Paris in 1645-1646 and then in Leiden in 1718 where it was combined with De Bondt's work for the first time. The present edition is a re-issue of the 1718 edition but with a new title page and an extra part. This extra part De rhapontico had been published separately in 1612 but was not published again until it was included in the present work. It discusses the therapeutic properties of rhubarb and is written in the form of a dialogue between Alpinus an Egyptian physician and a Jew. The other work by Alpinus included here De balsamo dialogus discusses the source of balsam and raises questions concerning its identity ancient names and medical uses. It is written in the same format as De rhapontico.The final text included here is De medicina Indorum libri IV by De Bondt which had been separately published in 1642. De Bondt who regarded tropical medicine as an independent branch of medical science spend several years in the Dutch East Indies where he studied the local medical practices. The work includes the first European description of beriberi and cholera.The head of the spine is somewhat worn with a horizontal tear in the vellum obscuring the manuscript title a brown stain on the back board. The pastedowns are detached from the boards but the structural integrity of the binding is still intact the edges of the leaves are slightly browned the last few leaves are stained at the bottom margin from the brown stain on the back board. 's Gravesande was a Dutch mathematician and natural philosopher who helped to propagate Isaac Newton's ideas in Continental Europe and laid the foundations for the teaching of Newtonian mechanics through experimental demonstrations. Vol. II of "Mathematical Elements of Natural Philosophy" studies Newton's ideas on fire the refraction and reflection of light opacity and colours the planetary system and celestial motions including universal gravity. The publisher John Senex was one of the principal cartographers of the 18th century. He was born in Menen but moved north to Haarlem where he became a schoolmaster and wrote educational books. In 1612 he published the work Nederduytsche spellinge which was a proposal for a comprehensive spelling of the Dutch language and in 1643 he published the math book Arithmetica oft reken-konst. He was a rival of Molière who had mocked his father in L'Impromptu de Versailles to which he responded with L'Impromptu de l'Hôtel de Condé but while Molière drew his manner from Italian theater Montfleury freely drew inspiration from Spanish theater; his comic theater is not a comedy of characters but a satire of contemporary society. Very large engraved folding plan comprising 1 1/2 sheets measuring 46 x 83 cm as assembled engraved by Danckert Danckertsz. and his father after drawings by Jacob Vennekool including the two hemispheres of the world map and a celestial map of the constellations of the northern hemisphere each 10 cm in diameter. Very large engraved plan showing the extraordinary cartographic mosaic floor of the Burgerzaal of the Amsterdam City Hall designed by Jacob van Campen with a celestial map in the centre and the magnificent map of the world in 2 hemispheres on either side. The engraving was first published in 1661 and the map shows Tasman's recent discoveries in Australia and Tasmania and depicts California as an island. Many discoveries from his second voyage remained otherwise unpublished until the end of the 17th-century. This engraved representation is all that is left of this cartographical work of art. Wear caused by people walking on the mosaic meant it had to be restored about a hundred years later. When in turn this restoration was damaged the two hemispheres were filled in with plain marble slabs without pictorial representation.The drawing of the floor was made by Jacob Vennekool who worked closely with Van Campen and since his drawings were first published even before the building was completed they may reflect Van Campen's plan more closely than the finished building itself. They also of course show it before the alterations made at various times in later years.Slightly wrinkled in the right margin one fold reinforced and a few tiny spots otherwise in very good condition.l Cf. Juli 1778 erfolgten Tode geblieben. - Mit seiner wissenschaftlichen Thõtigkeit hat sich H. vorzugsweise auf dem Gebiete der Anatomie bewegt um deren Bearbeitung er sich durch gr³ndliche Untersuchungen wohl verdient gemacht hat; die Resultate derselben hat er theils in zahlreichen akademischen Gelegenheitsschriften theils in den Akten der Leopoldinischen Akademie in den Actis Helveticis und in den Philosophical Transactions niedergelegt.
