The paper was first preseted in French "Essay sur la nomenclature chimique" in Journal de Physique the year before 1811."Of his contributions moreover to the development of the atomic theory and the advancement of chemical science not the least valuable was the introduction of a chemical symbolism which with slight modifivcations is in use at the present day. By giving his symbols a quantitative meaning - the symbol of an element representing one atomic proportion by weight - it was possible "to show briefly and clearly the number of elementary atoms in each compound and after the determination of their relative weights present the results of each analysis in a si8mple and easely retained manner.". Februar 17.71 zu Neviges bei Elberfeld geboren als Sohn eines Wundarztes war anfänglich Elementarlehrer studirte von 1788 an in Marburg unter den kümmerlichsten Verhältnissen Theologie wurde 1794 Hilfsprediger in Oberkassel entschloss sich aber 1797 zur Medicin überzugehen die er auf der kurcölnischen Universität Bonn und von 1799 an in Marburg studirte wo er 1801 mit der Diss. "Nunnullos aphorismos de aeris in corpus humanum effectu continens nee non de methodo exinde orta species gasium varias in morbis applicandi" Doctor wurde. Derselben folgte sehr bald eine "Darstellung einiger Resultate die aus der Anwendung der pneumatischen Chemie auf die praktische Arzneikunst hervorgehen; u.s.w." Marburg 1801. Nach Oberkassel zurückgekehrt gab er der literarischen Beschäftigung den Vorzug vor der Praxis und seine " Geschichte der Vaccine und ihrer Impfung u.s.w." Cöln 1802 trug viel zur allgemeinen Einführung derselben bei. Einen vortheilhaften Ruf als Militärarzt in russische Dienste zu treten lehnte er ab und schrieb: " Etwas über den Werth des warmen Badens nebst einigen Bemerkungen 'Über das Luftbad u.s.w." Frankfurt a. M. 1804 - "Ueber sogenannte Vorbauungsmittel; als Beitrag zur Ausrottunq diätetischer Vorurtheile" Cöln 1805 - "Kurze Uebersicht und Würdigunq der vorzüglichsten bisher in der Lustseuche versuchten Heilmittel; u.s.w." Frankfurt a. M. 1807. Er war 1805 nassauischer Amtsphysicus in Deutz geworden; indessen auch hier blieben wissenschaftliche Arbeiten in verschiedenen Zeitschriften die ihn selbst mit Goethe in Verbindung brachten und ihm einen Besuch desselben verschafften seine Hauptbeschäftigung und liessen ihn seine drückende finanzielle Lage weniger fühlen. Im Jahre 1808 siedelte er nach Cöln über kehrte aber 1814 nach Deutz zurück wo er während der provisorischen Verwaltung des Herzogthums Berg durch die alliirten Mächte Cantons- später Kreisphysicus bis 1817 war um dann seinen Wohnsitz wieder nach Cöln zu verlegen. Schriften die in diese und die nächste Zeit fallen waren: "Einige Bemerkungen über die jetzt herrschende Fieberform" Cöln 1814 - "Ueber die medicinische Anwendung des Zuckers" Ebenda 1816 - "Architektonischer Grundriss der medicinischen Disciplinen; . Zu Vorlesungen entworfen" Ebenda 1819 - "Revision der Kriterien . zur Entscheidung der Frage . . ob todtgefundene Neugeborene eines natürlichen oder gewaltsamen Todes gestorben seien u.s.w." Ebenda 1820. Im Jahre 1821 wurde er in Cöln Medicinalrath und Mitglied 'des Medicinal-Collegiums der Herzogthümer Jülich Cleve Berg nach dessen Auflösung 1823 auf Wartegeld gesetzt 1825 aber zum Regierungs-Medicinalrath in Trier designirt auf welche Stelle er jedoch gegen Entschädigung Verzicht leistete. Von seinen überaus zahlreichen Arbeiten unter denen sich bis zum Jahre 1830 allein gegen 70 Aufsätze in Zeitschriften und zahlreiche Artikel in dem Berliner Encyclopädischen Wörterbuche der medicinischen Wissenschaften befinden führen wir nur folgende an: "Einige vorläufige Bemerkungen über Cölln und seine Bewohner in medic. physischer Hinsicht u.s.w. Cöln 1824- "Ueber Luftreinigung in Zimmern und Krankensälen" Aachen 1826 - " Versuch einer medic. Topographie von Cöln am Rhein u. s. w. Berlin 1833 - "Natur und Kunst in Heilung der Krankheiten" Frankfurt a. M. 1834 - "Ueber Vorzeichen der Witterung u.s.w." Cöln 1834 "Die Atmosphäre und ihre vorzüglichsten Erscheinungen u.s.w." Frankfurt 1835 - "Ueber nachtheilige Umänderung und Verfälschung des Cyders Branntweins Thees Kaffees u.s.w. " Cöln 1836 - " Ueber Selbstentzündungen u.s.w. " Frankfurt a. M. 1837 - "Kurzgefasste Darstellung einer allgemeinen statistischen Uebersicht über das Verhältniss der Geburten und Sterbefälle zu den Lebenden" Cöln 1847. Lebensmüde mit sich und der Welt zerfallen schied er aus dieser am 13. Juli 1852 nachdem er einer der fruchtbarsten medicinischen Schriftsteller gewesen der sich fast in allen Fächern der Wissenschaft und Kunst nicht ohne Erfolg versucht hatte." G. Hirsch II pp.680-691. The papers represents one of the first announcements of Berzelius' discovery of the fixed chemical proportions determining the weights and valencies of the various constituent elements in inorganic compounds. The papers were published at the same time in German both here in Annalen and in Schweiger's Journal and in French. By running many hundreds of analysis of chemical compounds he gave so many examples of the law of definite proportions that the world of chemistry could no longer doubt its validity and in so doing he gave experimental evidence to the atomic theory. He hereby laid a solid fundation for the further development of chemistry.According to Söderbaum Jac. Berzelius 2 p.12 "It was a giant work one of the most importent in the history of chemistry which was here presented. One is even more impressed when one remembers that it was a pioneer undertaking in every sense of the term. Containing the first full and authoritative account of the Muller stereotyping process the earliest known save the doubtful claim of Valleyre; preceding Ged's experiments by a comfortable margin. Gray 1810-1889 who traveled to the Lapwai Mission in Lewiston ID in 1836 where he was the Nez Perce secular agent and she subsequently later married Jacob Kamm 1823-1912 pioneering Oregon steamship builder industrialist entrepreneur and owner/operator of the Vancouver Transportation Co. An exceedingly scarce original Washington Territory stock certificate issued originally in 1874 at the capitalization of the Vancouver Transportation Co. Jacob Kamm was one of the largest owners of the Oregon Steam & Navigation Co. -- first organized in 1860 joined with James Gray to form this second transportation company and acquired the George S. Wright a steamship which operated in the coastal trade between Portland Astoria Victoria and Sitka Alaska. They then also added the steamship Carrie only sailed until 1876 which Kamm had also constructed and thereby formed the Vancouver Transportation Co. Jacob Kamm’s son Charles Tilton Kamm 1860-1906 was mate master & pilot of several of the Kamm steamships on the Columbia & Lewis Rivers including the Undine and Lurline who sailed the Portland Vancouver & Astoria route and eventually became Superintendent of the Vancouver Transportation Co. & Lewis River Transportation Co. before dying suddenly of a stroke at 46.
