Lazare de Baïf 1496-1547 was a French humanist classical scholar translator of Sophocles' Electra and ambassador to Venice who flourished in the enlightened reign of François I to whom his delightfully illustrated book on captivities and the naval science of the ancients is dedicated; the book is edited by Charles Estienne. His close connection to the classical humanists in François I's circle has led some to speculate that the fine woocuts herein came from the worshop of Geoffroy Tory.
