In a manuscript waste parchment binding with cuttings from indentures serving as endpapers from 1791. Especially beautiful calligraphy on the front endpaper. Blue embossed stamps on fep and bep emblazoned with a crest and "One Pound" as well as a sliver of metal embedded. Edges a little scuffed and soiled but in largely great condition. Binding tight and interior bright and clean. Includes a Latin translation of the first book appended at rear 23 pages. Excellent early impression of this rare poetic work. The translation was made by the minor Utrecht poet Abraham Godart fl. 1666-1683 after the French translation which had appeared in 1682 in The Hague Céremonies et Coustumes parmi les Juifs The Hague Adriaan Moetjens 1682 and which was made by Richard Simon 1638-1712 a French priest member of the Oratorians who was an influential biblical critic orientalist and controversialist - Simon was early at odds with the Port-Royalists and Antoine Arnauld himself - using many pseudonyms such as here the pseudonym Simon Ville.The French translator Richard Simon added his own comments in a separate book Comparaison des ceremonies des Juifs which was also printed in 1682 in The Hague by the same publisher of Modenes work Adriaan Moetjens. The Dutch translator Abraham Godart also translated Simons additional text and the Amsterdam printer Timotheus ten Hoorn not only combined these two works in one book but also added the frontispiece and the plates of the 1682 French translation in reverse. Third edition of a handbook on the plague by Eduardus Putman enlarged and improved by Abraham Lenertsz Vrolingh. The first edition was published in 1603 in Amsterdam a second in 1646 in Zaandam. The present edition was most likely designed so that it could also be bound with Der matroosen ghesontheyd an account of scurvy by Vrolingh. In the preface Vrolingh states that by joining the two works both sailor and soldier would benefit from the knowledge.Putmans manuael seeks the cause of the plague in astrology holding Mercury responsible for the illness in the whole body and other planets for specific regions of the body such as behind the ears Saturn and the moon in the armpits Mars and the sun and in the groins Venus and Jupiter. It also discusses the influence of the four elements: water fire earth and air. Other subjects covered are the plague in pregnant women and a description of various symptoms such as headache heart palpitations thirst fever and diarrhoea followed by suggested treatments selected from experience. Most of the medicines pills and powders are made from plants and herbs such as nettle rhubarb rosemary and camomile. With the bookplate of Van der Hoeven. Abraham Ortelius was a Flemish scholar who moved to Antwerp to become a bookseller and cartographer. This map of ancient Spain is from his PARERGON published as an appendix to the THEATRUM ORBIS TERRARUM the world's first true atlas as well as the most authoritative and commercially successful atlas of the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Although it is dated 1586 in one cartouche this map actually is a second state printed between 1601 and 1612 as indicated by the stipple engraving in the ocean & seas and by the line through the word "Cinniana" in line 8 of the descriptive text within the cartouche in the lower right corner. The map is in very good condition: generally clean and bright with barely a hint of toning and minor soiling limited to the blank margins. He is widely regarded as the creator of the first modern atlas the 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum' Theatre of the World first published in 1570 by Gilles Coppens de Diest in Antwerp. Considered the world's first true atlas it established the modern format of uniform standardized maps bound together in a single volume. Appointed Geographer to King Philip II of Spain in 1575 Ortelius was one of the most influential figures in the history of cartography. Built in the 1750s by Jean David Henchoz a wealthy notary and judge the Grand Chalet was used as a hotel in the following century when it was visited by a distinguished clientele that included Victor Hugo before being bought by the painter Balthus 1908-2001. A cache of documents and publications concealed by the Henchoz family in the eighteenth century in the attics of the Grand Chalet Rossiniere in the Vaudois Alps. Built in the 1750s by Jean David Henchoz a wealthy notary and judge the Grand Chalet was used as a hotel in the following century when it was visited by a distinguished clientele that included Victor Hugo before being bought by the painter Balthus 1908-2001. The collection includes a sequence of seventeenth century documents on vellum that relate to the purchase of the land on which the Grand Chalet stands in Rossiniere. The pamphlets are in very mixed condition but include several with inscriptions by members of the Henchoz family including Gallatin's theses on the Vacuum and Chapuis on Disentery pointing to the family's scientific interests. There is a group of Berne imprints as well as a chapbook French translation of Defoe's Robinson Crusoe and a work on the Huguenot refugee crisis from 1691: MANUSCRIPTS 1. From 1626 to 1658 Wicquefort served as Brandenburg's envoy to the French court. However Cardinal Mazarin suspected him of involvement in a dubious correspondence and had him imprisoned in the Bastille. After a year he was released with a French pension and moved to The Hague as the representative of the Duchy of Braunschweig-Lüneburg. In 1675 he faced imprisonment again this time by the Dutch government on charges of treasonous dealings with the French. First published at Rotterdam by Jan van Waesberghe in 1608 the present work is the earliest reaction in print to the presence of Jews and their religion in the Dutch Republic van Rooden. Citing M. Bodian’s Hebrews of the Portuguese Nation R. Po-Chia Hsia describes the cultural context: “Coming initially in the 1590s as Portuguese merchants and Christian converts the so-called ‘New Christians’ Sephardic Jews in fact were welcomed by the Regents of Holland but were strongly opposed by the Reformed clergy. When the conversos reverted to the open practice of Judaism reaction from the Reformed Church was fierce. The predikant Abraham Coster 1575-1620 attacked the Sephardim as an ‘unclean people’ who sought to build a public synagogue ‘in which they can perform their evil and foolish ceremonies and spew forth their gross blasphemies against Christ and his holy gospels as well as their curses against the Christians and Christian authorities’â€.
