Abraham Vater "Arzt und Naturforscher und besonders ausgezeichnet als Anatom wurde als Sohn von Christian Vater am 9. December 1684 in Wittenberg geboren. Er studirte seit 1702 die Heilkunde an der Universität seiner Vaterstadt wo er 1706 die philosophische Doctorwürde erlangte und später auch in Leipzig wo er 1710 den medicinischen Doctorgrad erwarb. Darauf machte er eine größere wissenschaftliche Reise durch Deutschland England und Holland mit längerem Aufenthalt in Amsterdam und Leyden wo er unter Ruysch eingehendere anatomische Studien trieb und besonders sich mit der von diesem Autor kunstvoll gepflegten Injectionstechnik vertraut machte. Nach seiner Rückkehr habilitirte er sich 1712 als Docent in Wittenberg wurde daselbst 1717 außerordentlicher 1719 ordentlicher Professor der Anatomie und Botanik und lehrte diese Fächer gemeinschaftlich von 1733 ab aber ausschließlich die Anatomie mit großem Erfolg den er dadurch steigerte daß er in verdienstlicher Weise ein reichhaltiges anatomisches Museum gründete. 1737 erhielt er auch die Professur der Pathologie doch überließ er die Vorträge über dieses Gebiet dem Dr. Stenzel während er selbst fortfuhr seine Kraft dem anatomischen Unterricht bezw. der Forschung anhaltend zu widmen. Nachdem er 1746 auch noch zum ersten Professor der Therapie an der Wittenberger Universität ernannt war verblieb er zuletzt als Senior der medicinischen Facultät in dieser Stellung bis zu seinem am 18. November 1751 eingetretenen Lebensende. - Vater der auch Mitglied der k. k. Leopold.-Carolinischen Akademie der Naturforscher war ist ein außerordentlich vielseitiger Forscher gewesen. Seine zahlreichen Arbeiten betreffen die Botanik Chemie Pharmakologie allgemeine und specielle Pathologie und Therapie die Chirurgie Gynäkologie und Staatsarzneikunde. Sie alle werden bei weitem überragt durch Vater's Leistungen in der Anatomie die er durch hervorragende Forschungen von bleibendem Werth bereichert hat. Erwähnenswerth sind besonders die Abhandlungen über den Mechanismus der Schließung des foramen ovale 1714 über ein Divertikel an der Mündung des ductus choledochus im Zwölffingerdarm 1720 über einen Speichelgang in der Zunge 1720 1723 über einen Ringmuskel am Gebärmuttergrunde 1723. In einer Dissertation von Lehmann "De consensu partium corporis humani" Wittenberg 1741 beschreibt er ferner die unter seinem Namen bekannten dann in Vergessenheit gerathenen und von Pacini im 3. Decennium dieses Jahrhunderts erst wieder entdeckten sogenannten Tastkörperchen als kleine ovale Anschwellungen papillae nerveae mit denen die Hautnerven der Handfläche und Fußsohlen beim Menschen nicht selten besetzt gefunden werden. Außer durch die bereits oben erwähnte Einrichtung eines anatomischen Museums hat sich Vater um die Hebung des bezüglichen Unterrichts in Wittenberg noch dadurch verdient gemacht daß er auch anatomische Demonstrationen für Frauen hielt und für die Ablieferung der Leichen von Selbstmördern an die Anatomie Sorge trug. Vater's ausserordentlich ausgedehnte literarische Thätigkeit war vorwiegend der Anatomie zugewendet; ausserdem aber hat er zahlreiche meist als Inaug.-Disscrtt. veröffentlichte Abhandlungen aus dem Gebiete der Botanik der Chemie der Pharmakol. der allgem. und spec. Pathol und Ther. sowie auch der Chir. Gynäkol. und Staatsarzneik. verfasst. Einen sehr grossen Theil derselben hat HALLER wieder abdrucken lassen Disp. ad morb. hist. I-IV VI VII ; Disp. chir. Bits of card show at corner-tips but the hide was well-tanned and would be responsive to restorative measures i.e. the hide could use a coat or two of archival-grade leather dressing. The Dutch Ambassador's guide to the functions of an ambassador and his recollections of his work in France England and Holland and time spent imprisoned in the Bastille. Dated April 17 1865 this is a relatively early account of the Lincoln assassination. Most of the coverage is on the second and third pages of the newspaper. The articles include stories on the "death bed scene" the attacks on Secretary Seward and his son the national reaction and reports on those involved in the plot. Some interesting coverage of a national event in a local newspaper.</p>

He started as a General Arminianism Baptist but became a Particular Calvinist Baptist. This work was a compliment to one of his best known books Reign of Grace Starr B4039. xxiv 160 pages ; 18 cm 12mo. Size: 7.5"-8" - Small Octavo Sm. 8vo. 160 pages. The laid paper is bright and in good condition with no marks or foxing. Bound in blue paper-covered boards with a shellacked brown paper spine. Most of the spine is gone. The part left has a hand-written title "Legal Hope" in an early hand. The front cover is still tight but the hinge of the back cover has worn through and is just holding on by the cords. The book is protected in a well made custom slipcase covered by brown marbled paper on the sides with a small green label with the title "Death of Legal Hope" stamped in gilt. A previous owner's bookplate is pasted to the inside front cover. The somewhat roughly cut but not deckled page edges are slightly browned. An Ex-Library copy. The markings are a large red stamp for Waterville College Libary in the middle of the title page the words "Coll. Lib" inscribed in an early 19th century hand at the top of the title page an unfortunate 1/2" square marked by a felt marker touching the bottom of the "L" in "Lib." and a "Colby College Library Withdrawn" stamp on the rear free end paper. There is also a stamped accession number on the bottom of the verso of the title page and the stamped date "Oct 18 1940" below it. Quantity Available: 1. Beautifully bound in quarter tan leather over marbled boards banded spine with gilt title on brown leather label and gilt flourishes. In very collectible condition.</p><p>Abraham Grill 1736–1792 was a Swedish merchant and director of the Swedish East India Company SOIC and ironmaster at Godegård with several factories. Grill journeyed to China twice as the representative for the SOIC. He lived in Canton Guangzhou as well as Macao for almost ten years and together with his partner Michael Grubb smuggled opium from India to China. He returned to Sweden in 1768 a wealthy man and lived the rest of his life in Swedish high society writing and delivering essays about his travels as member of the Royal Swedish Academies of Sciences and Music becoming President of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1774.</p> Lars Salvius hardcover
