194327301Boston: Little Brown and Company. Very Good in Good dj. 1943. First Edition. Hardcover. a good sound copy with only light shelfwear an ex-rental library book The Dobrin Libraries Los Angeles but marked as such on by a faint rubber-stamp on both the front endpaper and overlapping the rear pastedown/jacket flap; the jacket is a little edgeworn with a vertical scratch in the front panel and a narrow strip of tape across the base of the spine; it's also mostly backed neatly with brown paper which has discolored about a 1-1/2" strip along the edges of both inside covers and has been trimmed to a size about 1/4" shorter than the book itself. Future blacklistee Polonsky's first novel under his own name about an oil tanker on a dangerous journey through German-submarine-infested waters from Galveston to New York. The primary characters are a magazine feature-writer accompanied by an "incredibily attractive and talented" woman news photographer futher described as "brittle successful and lovely." Polonsky's biographers call the novel as "his major literary contribution to the war effort" and one contemporary reviewer noted that it had "all the sure-fire ingredients" for a movie scenario although his career as a screenwriter wouldn't really start up until after the war -- "action brawls intrigue and suspense" -- as the aforementioned pair uncovered a Nazi plot to scuttle the vessel midway through its voyage. .
