The most strikingly beautiful flower plates ever to be printed in England.<br/> <br/>"The Persian Cyclamen Cyclamen persicum Miller parent of the florist's cyclamen. is a native of the countries and islands at the eastern end of the Mediterranean but not of Persia itself. It is the largest flowered of an attractive genus of small plants much grown in modern times by connoisseurs. The Persian Cyclamen was not the first of its kind to become known in western Europe. Cyclamen europeaum the `Bleeding Nun' as it was called was thought to be dangerous to pregnant women: any unfortunate lady in this condition who stepped over it might immediately miscarry. John Gerrard the Elizabethan herbalist believed this implicitly and describes how he fenced his plants around with sticks with others laid across them `lest any woman should by lamentable experiment find my words to be true by stepping over the same.' When the baby was nearing full term and delivery was to be encouraged wearing of the disc-like tuber `hanged about' the expectant mothers had a salutary effect and Gerrard told his wife to use it when attending confinements. Thornton's Temple of Flora is the greatest English colour-plate flower book. ".Thornton inherited a competent fortune and trained as a doctor. He appears to have had considerable success in practice and was appointed both physician to the Marylebone Dispensary and lecturer in medical botany at Guy's and St. Thomas's hospitals. But quite early in his career he embarked on his. great work. What Redouté produced under the patronage of L'Héritier Marie Antoinette the Empress Josephine Charles X and the Duchesse de Berry Thornton set out to do alone. Numerous important artists were engaged. twenty-eight paintings of flowers commissioned from Abraham Pether known as `Moonlight Pether' Philip Reinagle . Sydenham Edwards and Peter Henderson. The result. involved Thornton in desperate financial straits. In an attempt to extricate himself he organized the Royal Botanic Lottery under the patronage of the Prince Regent. it is easy to raise one's eyebrows at Thornton's unworldly and injudicious approach to publishing. Third state of three of this plate from the Temple of Flora. `In the first state the top the castle is indistinct and has no pinnacles on the towers and this is the first feature to inspect. The hillside is pure aquatint; the shading behind the cyclamen flowers is lightly cross-hatched while the tree trunk to the right has only a few lines on it. In the second state the castle is more prominent and five distinct sharp pinnacles have been added while many extra etched lines are to be seen - notably behind the cyclamen flowers; on the tree trunk; and under the cyclamen leaves on the left which themselves stand out more sharply. The principal change in the third state is the addition of the aquatint to the sky on the left so that only a streak of light remains above the mountains while in the earlier states the light reached the top corner. The leaves of the cyclamen now have. light and dark patches the coarse-grained aquatint has been added to the middle distance. Much additional aquatinting has been applied to other parts of the plate. Early owner signatures and annotation to front wrapper and map not the image side interior otherwise clean. $950. "Third Edition." Abraham Thornton a bricklayer "was accused of rape and murder after attending a dance where he became intimate with a gardener's daughter named Mary Ashford. They left the dance together and her body was found the next morning in a deep pool of water near a local footpath. Thornton was tried at the Warwick assizes on 8 August 1817. Since the marks on Mary's body were not necessarily inconsistent with Thornton's claim that she had consented to sexual intercourse and since the times on the morning in question when Thornton was seen walking home to Bromwich suggested he could not have been with her when she met her death the jury found him not guilty. The case aroused much interest and reminded people of a similar murder of a local woman a year earlier. Many were convinced of Thornton's guilt and he was assailed in local and London newspapers. A group collected around the Birmingham solicitor William Bedford invoked the old legal process of 'appeal of murder' by which a person acquitted of murder could be tried again for the same offense. In October 1861 England France and Spain signed a treaty to force Mexican reparations; the English and Spanish withdrew but the French remained unseating Benito Juarez and installing Maximilian as Emperor . This was of grave concern to Lincoln and the North and a violation of the Monroe Doctrine. Also of concern was the relations between the Confederacy and Mexico. Jacobi was a giant of American pediatrics and he remains the only foreign-born President of the American Medical Association. His view of pediatrics included the social and cultural aspects of caring for children. It is in this light that he addresses Rudolf Virchow. Virchow's seminal work in cellular theory and biology often overshadows Virchow's view that medicine was more than science. A memorable Virchow aphorism is "Medicine is a social science and politics are nothing but medicine on a grand scale." Social and political reforms based on medical knowledge were critical to the public's health. 18871002385New York City 1887. Invitation to Walt Whitman's private reception after his celebrated lecture "The Death of Abraham Lincoln" at Madison Square Theatre on April 14 1887. Whitman had given public readings of his Lincoln lecture variously edited since 1879; one version was published in Specimen Days in 1882-1883. Scheduled on the twenty-second anniversary of Lincoln's assassination the 1887 event was staged as a benefit for the ailing Whitman who remained seated throughout his sold-out tribute to the Union's "Martyr Chief": "there is a cement to the whole people subtler more underlying than any thing in written constitution or courts or armies - namely the cement of a death identified thoroughly with that people at its head and for its sake." As William Pannapacker notes Whitman's passionate public identification with Lincoln was central to his emergence as "The Good Gray Poet" a national treasure: "Whitman's experiments in self-creation finally succeeded with a major segment of the public when he enclosed his persona within the halo encircling the martyred President" Revised Lives 22. The New York audience for Whitman's performance included Mark Twain John Hay Augustus St. Gaudens James Russell Lowell and Charles Eliot Norton; Andrew Carnegie could not make it but purchased a box for $350. At the end of his performance Whitman was surprised by a gift of lilacs from poet E.C. Stedman's young granddaughter a reference to his great elegy for Lincoln "When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd." In New York City for a single night Whitman hosted a reception in his rooms at the Westminster Hotel after the lecture; this invitation was printed for the occasion. The evening was an important one for New York literary society a celebration "at least as spectacular as the event itself" according to the New York Sun. Looking "like a painting of Jove" Whitman entertained a constant stream of admirers relieved only by the performance of the Afro-Cuban violinist Claudio Brindis de Salas Garrido "El Paganini Negro" who serenaded Whitman on a seventeenth-century Ruggeri violin: "Walt was mightily pleased with the music." A surprising survival a near-fine artifact of the nineteenth-century American literary scene. Ivory card measuring 2.75 x 3.75 inches printed recto only: "Walt Whitman / At Home -- Thursday Evening / April 14th 1887 / Westminster Hotel Irving Place and 16th St. New York." Penciled bookseller note to verso: "April 14 1887 for his most famous lecture Lincoln / WW in NY for only one 1 night." Card lightly toned; half-inch closed tear to head expertly repaired.
