But how do you propose to preserve the public morals Why by "providing temporary asylums for prostitutes removed by the operation of the laws from the public streets and affording to such of them as are destitute employment and relief." This may be very well so far as it goes; but it is certainly going a very short way towards the preservation of public morals.' Both this reprint from Valpy's magazine 'The Pamphleteer' and the original are scarce with the only copies of either on COPAC at the British Library Cambridge and LSE. A. J. First edition of "the finest work on falconry which has ever been produced; not only on account of the beauty of the plates wherein the hawks are depicted life-size and of the natural colours but also for the general accuracy of the letterpress" Harting. The very beautiful plates include ten after Joseph Wolf which "are by far the finest ever produced in any book on falconry. It is impossible to describe the mellowness and beauty of the colourings" Schwerdt.Wolf is described by Jackson as an "artist who ranks among the world's finest animal painters" and the present images were largely responsible for launching his international career. "Wolf's success lay in his sketching from life after painstaking study of the anatomy of the animals and his care to get the structure correct and then paint fur and feather with extraordinary fidelity. But all the marvelous technique and deep knowledge was subservient to his ability to capture a moment in the life of his subject and preserve it in paint. Archibald Thorburn said of Wolf's pictures 'There is an indescribable feeling of life and movement attained by no other wildlife artist'" Jackson. Sir Edwin Landseer went further describing Wolf as "without exception the best all-round animal painter that ever lived".The letterpress text includes extensive sections on the terms used in falconry on the equipment used descriptions of the birds that were currently being flown and those that were not used. The text continues with recommended methods of catching or taking a suitable bird how this bird should be treated and how it should be trained and then how it should be flown. This is followed by a lengthy historical survey of falconry in Europe Africa Russia Asia and the Americas. The text finishes with a six-page bibliography of works on falconry and an explanation of the plates. This famous book on falconry by H. Schlegel and A.H. Verster van Wulverhorst is known chiefly for its lifesize coloured illustrations of birds of prey lithographs after watercolours by Josef Wolf. Wivell had risen from impoverished beginnings and an apprenticeship to a wigmaker and hairdresser before reaching public notice as an artist with portraits of the Cato Street conspirators awaiting trial. This led to a commission to draw portraits of the participants in the "trial" of Queen Caroline in the House of Lords thence to abundant portrait commissions from the royal family the aristocracy and leading theatrical figures. This publication however brought his prosperity to a sudden end as its sales failed to cover the expense of producing the plates reducing Wivell "from affluence to comparative poverty" Art Journal 206. He was rescued by an uncle's legacy and his own ingenuity subsequently inventing a rope fire escape that was credited with saving hundreds of lives. Jaggard notes that the edition size was 500 copies of which 50 had plates on India paper and 25 were printed on large paper. Octavo 207 x 135 mm in 2 parts the supplement with separate title. Engraved frontispiece of the Stratford monument 20 engraved plates. Mid 19th-century red half calf contrasting green labels low raised bands attractively gilt marbled sides blue-green endpapers red sprinkled edges. "Im Jahre 1849 traf ich zum ersten Male ein schräg verengtes Becken in meiner Praxis an und konnte die Diagnose mit hinlänglicher Sicherheit feststellen und mein therapeutisches Verfahren darnach einrichten. Bei vier schnell auf einander folgenden Schwangerschaften war ich so glücklich die Frau durch das Einleiten der künstlichen Frühgeburt am Leben zu erhalten und nachdem sie im Jahre 1853 diese Operation beharrlich abgelehnt hatte und bei der Geburt eines ausgetragenen Kindes an Zerreissung der Gebärmutter gestorben war kam ich in den Besitz des Beckens. Wenige Jahre später 1857 begegnete mir ein zweiter Fall dieser Art und zwar bei einer unverheirateten Erstgebährenden in meiner Klinischen Anstalt. Auch in diesem Fall konnte ich nur mit Sicherheit die Gestalt des Beckens diagnosticiren sondern es gelang mir auch ein richtiges Urtheil zu Fällen über die relative Weite des Beckens welches eines der kleinsten war die bis jetzt beschrieben worden sind. Das Kind wurde durch den Kaiserschnitt lebendig zur Welt gebracht die Mutter aber erlag der Operation bereits am zweiten Tage. Diese beiden Fälle erweckten in mir ein sehr lebhaftes Interesse für diese Art fehlerhaft gebildeter weiblicher Becken und bereits im Jahre 1857 fasste ich den Entschluss das schräg verengte Becken zum Gegenstand einer wissenschaftlichen Arbeit zu wählen welche geeignet wäre sich an die klassische Monographie Naegele's anzuschliessen eine Uebersicht dessen zu liefern was in den letzten 20 Jahren von verschiedenen Geburtshelfern und Pathologen darüber geschrieben worden ist und die Lehre des schräg verengten Beckens bis auf unsere Zeit fortzusetzen." Vorrede Abraham Everhard Simon Thomas 1820-1886 studierte in Leyden wo er 1845 promovierte. Er liess sich in Rotterdam nieder wurde jedoch nach Leyden als Professor der Geburtshilfe und Gynäkologie berufen. Hier fing er da die durch Du Pin früher für den geburtshilflichen Unterricht gestiftete Poliklinik ganz vernachlässigt war bald an eine geburtshilfliche Poliklinik zu eröffnen und hat dadurch das Material für den Unterricht speziell für den praktischen Teil so vergrössert dass es fast nie an Wöchnerinnen mangelt welche in ihrem eigenen Hause die nöthige Hilfe von den Studierenden empfangen eine Methode welche für die selbständige Entwicklung der Jüngeren selbstverständlich von grossem Einfluss war. Auch sein theoretischer Unterricht wurde von jedem seiner Schüler als vortrefflich gerühmt. Seine Monographie "Das schräg verengte Becken" gilt bei Sachverständigen für eine echt klassische Arbeit; sein Vorschlag beim verengten Becken nicht auf die Füße sondern auf die Knie zu wenden ist seit dem fast überall angenommen. -cf. The Departure - Second Class" and "The Return - First Class" are a pair of moralistic narrative works a popular genre in Victorian times and demonstrate the growing trend towards emigration particularly to Australia. The Victorian artist Abraham Solomon depicts a family traveling second class to a port where the young boy will go to sea in "The Departure". In "The Return" the boy returns as a successful middle aged squatter in the first class carriage with his son and daughter. <br /> <br /> Both paintings by Solomon are held in the National Railway Museum UK . Of "The Departure" they write "The painting is a contemporary image of rail travel showing the discomfort of the lower classes traveling in a draughty bench-seated second class carriage. Despite their discomfort this shows how the railways opened up travel to the less wealthy as well as those with money. It also shows how the industry allowed travel nationally and internationally with the posters in the background advertising passage to Australia highlighting the growing trend of emigration. Here they appear re-engraved in a smaller format by an unknown artist. The entire piece measures 27.5 inches by 20.5 inches. Abraham Lincoln served as the 16th President of the United States from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865. He led the United States through its Civil War and in doing so preserved the Union of the United States of America abolished slavery and strengthened the federal government. Lincoln began constructing his cabinet on election night and sought to create a cabinet that would unite the Republican party. His eventual cabinet would include his primary rivals for the Republican nomination and although his appointees held differing views on economic issues all were opposed to the expansion of slavery into the territories of the United States. The most senior cabinet post of Secretary of State was appointed to William Seward who had recently failed to win the 1860 Republican presidential nomination and Lincoln's choice for Secretary of the Treasury was Ohio Senator Salmon P. GOOD; internally VERY GOOD. ix 165 pages. 8pp adverts to rear. ABRAHAM STOKER 8 November 1847 - 20 April 1912 was an Irish author who wrote the 1897 Gothic horror novel Dracula. During his lifetime he was better known as the personal assistant of actor Sir Henry Irving and business manager of the West End's Lyceum Theatre which Irving owned. In his early years Stoker worked as a theatre critic for an Irish newspaper and wrote stories as well as commentaries. He also enjoyed travelling particularly to Cruden Bay in Scotland where he set two of his novels. During another visit to the English coastal town of Whitby Stoker drew inspiration for writing Dracula. He died on 20 April 1912 due to locomotor ataxia and was cremated in north London. Since his death his magnum opus Dracula has become one of the best-known works in English literature and the novel has been adapted for numerous films short stories and plays. Sm.8vo. The popular series based on Tarbell's own original research and interviews helped boost McClure's circulation to over 250000 which climbed to over 300000 by 1900 and allowed McClure to buy a printing plant and a bindery. Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Tom Taylor 19 October 1817 12 July 1880 was an English dramatist critic biographer public servant and editor of Punch magazine. Taylor had a brief academic career holding the professorship of English literature and language at University College London in the 1840s after which he practised law and became a civil servant. At the same time he became a journalist most prominently as a contributor to and eventually editor of Punch. In addition to these vocations Taylor began a theatre career and became best known as a playwright with up to 100 plays staged during his career. Many were adaptations of French plays but these and his original works cover a range from farce to melodrama. Most fell into neglect after his death but Our American Cousin 1858 which achieved great success in the 19th century remains famous as the piece that was being performed in the presence of US President Abraham Lincoln when he was assassinated in 1865. hardcover

Slim 8vo 21 pp. Contemporary full green morocco boards with dense gilt fillet borders and elaborate gilt corner and frame tooling upper cover lettered in gilt; spine gilt ruled. Rubbing to extremities minor wear at corners but a handsome and well-preserved presentation binding. Internally clean with manuscript material neatly bound in at the front. Very good. Presentation copy inscribed by the author to Alfred Montgomery with the inscription leaf bound in at the front: "Alfred Montgomery Esq. with best regards A.H." Bound in with the pamphlet are five autograph letters addressed to Alfred Montgomery: four from Emily Temple Viscountess Palmerston and one from Henry John Temple 3rd Viscount Palmerston dated 1856 and signed "Palmerston". The Palmerston letter was written during his first term as Prime Minister 1855-1858. The Lady Palmerston letters concern social arrangements and engagements. The pamphlet itself was privately issued marked "Not for Sale" and printed shortly after Lady Palmerston's death in 1869. Hayward's sketch is one of the earliest biographical appreciations of her role within Whig political and social life. Alfred Montgomery 1814-1896 was a senior Admiralty clerk private secretary to Lord Wellesley later Commissioner of Stamps and Taxes and of the Inland Revenue and a well-known Victorian society figure. According to contemporary accounts he was a well known dandy that had 'known domestic trouble and been rewarded by non-domestic success'. He was clearly closely associated with the Palmerstons and both wrote to him personally with the letters that have been bound in. A highly unusual Palmerston association volume most likely a commemorative memento put together by Montgomery. The result being a privately printed biographical text authorial presentation inscription and contemporary autograph correspondence of both Lady Palmerston and the Prime Minister himself preserved in a presentation binding. .
