Very scarce first French edition of the very important and significant account of the discoveries of Krusenstern. Borba de Moraes writes: "The expedition became famous as the beginning of Russian exploration in the North Pacific on the Asian coast as well as the American. Krusenstern explored the northern part of the Sakhalin Island concluding erroneously that it was a peninsula. This mistake was only corrected fifty years later by Nevelskoi. Besides its geographical interest Krusenstern's account is also valuable for the study of the fur trade in the extreme north. From the Brazilian point of view the interest lies in the description of the expedition's stay in Santa Catharina."The descriptions of the Marquesas Islands Hawaii and Japan are of great scientific importance. The views in the atlas show among others the Marquesans with five plates concerning Japan and two of the Ainu people. Among the charts are those of the Washington Isles Port Ana Maria at Nukuhiva Port Tschitschagoff Nagasaki Sakhalin the Kuriles and Awatscha Bay.With a paper label R. D. P. on the front pastedown of volume 1 and the atlas a manuscript shelf mark "A. 14. R. 2." on the first flyleaf of the two text volumes. The edges and corners of the boards of the text volumes are slightly scuffed. Some of the leaves are somewhat foxed around the margins. The joints of the boards of the atlas are slightly weakened without affecting the structural integrity of the binding. The first and last few leaves are browned with a water stain in the lower outer corner of the first few leaves not affecting the images. Ivan von Krusenstern's voyage was one of the most important post-Cook Pacific voyages specifically aimed at obtaining more knowledge of the northern Pacific region establishing diplomatic and commercial relations with Japan and visiting the Russian trading posts in Alaska and on the west coast of America. It comprised the first Russian expedition to circumnavigate the globe under the command of Krusenstern between 1803 and 1806. Sailing in 1803 the expedition touched on Brazil and rounded Cape Horn visiting the Marquesas Islands Hawaii Kamchatka and Japan. In Hawaii the expedition separated with ships under Langsdorff and Lisianski sailing to the Northwest Coast while Krusenstern himself undertook the delicate Japan expedition returning via Macao and the Cape of Good Hope. "The importance of this work stems from its being the official account of the first Russian expedition to circumnavigate the globe and form the discoveries and rectifications of charts that were made especially in the North Pacific and on the northwest coast of America" Hill. First published in St. Petersburg between 1809 and 1814 with issues in both Russian and German that first edition with its folio atlas of 105 plates is a major rarity of travel literature. With the atlas of 17 plates.

Bylandt-Palstercamp’s Théorie des volcans is a result of more than thirty years of research and survey of volcanos while the author visited the mountain chains of Europe Asia and America. In this three-volume monumental work he delineates many interesting and curious discoveries and revelations about the volcanos in general and the volcanic phenomena. Discusses his theories about the distinct elevation and the different shapes of the volcanos the fixed orientation of their summits slopes and orifices and the specific location of the volcanos around the globe. The author attributes the currents of the sea to volcanic activities correlates earthquakes to the same phenomena and shows the relation between mount altitudes and magnetic power. Bylandt-Palstercamp classifies the mountains the lavas and the operation of the volcanos and defines a general law to determine the formation of volcanic cones. The work is appended with an album of seventeen large plates to illustrate the subject.

Not much is known about the author besides the present work and it's preliminary pamphlet we couldn’t find anything else he published. The preliminary contains the same text as “Avant-propos†of the present book vol. 1. pp. 1–83 with some minor stylistic and typographical changes and was published twice under the title Résumé préliminaire de l’ouvrage sur la Théorie des volcans in Naples in 1833 and under a slightly different title in Paris in 1834.

The second volume of our copy contains several annotations corrections and deletions in the author’s hand. The shorter notes and corrections are in pencil in the text and the longer ones written in ink on separate small papers are inserted into the gutter at the corresponding locations. The extent of these notes varies mostly the length of a paragraph some are longer like a 2-page one supplementing the section “Influence volcanique†on p. 38 and a 4-page revision of the text of “Effects des Eaux†on pp. 54–57. The section on Basalt on pp. 329–362 was corrected in pencil more heavily than the others and a 16-page supplement in ink on Bohemia was added to the end of the volume corresponding with the text on p. 396.

The album printed the subsequent year in 1836 contains 17 lithograph plates of maps views and diagrams in three different large sizes each designed by Bylandt-Palstercamp. 186699950St Petersburg: I. I. Glazunov 1866. First edition of the much-improved second Russian translation of Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations reproducing the notes and apparatus from the 1843 Blanqui edition. This translation published following the growing public dissatisfaction with an earlier version encumbered with obsolete prose and unspecific terminology appeared in the Library of Classical European Writers translated by P. A. Bibikov. "The first Russian translation of the Wealth by N. R. Politkovsky had appeared between 1802 and 1806; in its first volume the translator himself had referred to the difficulty of rendering Smith's specific terminology in Russian writing that 'he vas a novice in the subject himself although Smith also seemed to have some difficulty in elaborating his ideas with clarity'" Tribe p. 156. "By the middle of the nineteenth century the first translation of Wealth of Nations was increasingly unsatisfactory to Russian readers working in a language that had developed considerably since the early part of the century. Bibikov already had a reputation as a historian philosopher and literary critic and this undoubtedly had a part in the generally high level of presentation of the translations which have notes indexes and supplements. However Bibikov's translation was not made from the English original but from Blanqui's version of Garnier's French edition including an apparatus that drew upon the commentary of Buchanan Garnier McCulloch and others which Bibikov retained in the Russian translation" ibid. pp. 160-161. 3 vols octavo 202 x 134 mm. Adam Smith in Portuguese First edition in Portuguese comprising a selection of passages from books I-IV of Smith's Wealth of Nations translated from the third English edition of 1784 by Bento da Silva Lisboa. "Given the strong Brazilian interest in Smith's work one can better understand why the first Portuguese translation of Wealth of Nations appeared during 1811-12 in Rio de Janeiro. This is a partial translation with the omission of Book V and half of Books I and IV. The translator's preface makes clear that Wealth of Nations was translated and studied as a doctrinal blueprint to promote the liberalisation of economic relations between Portugal and her most important colony fostering in this way the independent development of the Brazilian economy." Text volumes bound in grey paper boards rebacked paper labels; atlas bound to style in grey paper boards.

First French edition with the very rare atlas not published with the English edition.

This is the first Russian circumnavigation written by its commander and of great importance to Pacific history for his account of the attempt to open Japan to commerce and for Krusenstern's notes on the Russian-Chinese trade. The two ships sailed from Kronstadt on July 19th 1803 and were together until the Marquesas and Hawaii. They visited Hawaii in the summer of 1804 touching briefly on the Big Island to trade for needed supplies. From there Krusenstern sailed by himself for Kamchatka where he made extensive surveys and ethnographic inquiries. Japan was the main focus of the expedition. They arrived at Nagasaki on Aug. 30th 1804 with the emissary from the Tsar and presents including looking glasses and a portrait of Catherine the Great. Hoping to open a trade mission and expecting more freedom than was granted the Dutch they found themselves "greatly mistaken." They were kept in confinement and suspense and at the audience the following April the negotiations collapsed. The ships' repairs were put to the Imperial account all gifts were sent back and they were politely but firmly asked not to return. The narrative contains a detailed account of the negotiations and includes a view of Nagasaki Harbor one of the first views of Japan published in the west. Krusenstern charted much of the west coast of Japan made a short stop at Hokkaido and at Aniwa Bay and gives an account of his contact with Ainu people. The fine atlas is illustrated with twenty-one lithographic plates by Engelmann and nine engraved maps three folding. Though unsigned O'Reilly says the plates are probably the work of Tilesius one of the naturalists of the ship. They include a portrait of Krusenstern four views of Nukuhiwa and eight of Japan including the Ainus. The maps include three of the Marquesas and four of Japanese interest. "The work received wide acclaim and so impressed the stepfather of the young duke of Buccleuch that he invited Smith to become the duke's tutor with the promise of a pension for life. The greater part of the Theory of Moral Sentiments is an account of moral psychology. The mainstay of Smith's moral psychology is sympathy.Smith characterizes the mechanism of sympathy in this way: 'Whatever is the passion which arises from any object in the person principally concerned an analogous emotion springs up at the throught of this situation in the breast of every attentive spectator'.Smith argues that if the appearance of grief or joy for example arouses similar feelings in us it is because these feelings suggest to us the general idea of some good or evil that has befallen the person in whom we observe them" Encyclopedia of Philosophy.

"The Theory of Moral Sentiments was published in April 1759 and at once brought Smith something more than local fame. Bibikov regarded the two works as complementing each other as he remarks in his preface to this translation "the works reinforce each other. That is why having published in Russian Adam Smith's great work of political economy I decided to translate and publish his other work which is no less remarkable and yet known even less to Russian society than the first" p. 5. "Bibikov's translation probably done via French remained the only Russian version available until 1997". National Library of Scotland.Adam Smith developed a comprehensive and unusual version of moral sentimentalism in his Theory of Moral Sentiments 1759 TMS. He did not expressly lay out a political philosophy in similar detail but a distinctive set of views on politics can be extrapolated from elements of both TMS and his Wealth of Nations. 1818171057London: for Longman Hurst Rees Orme and Brown and Archibald Constable and Co. Edinburgh 1818. Identifying Smith's earliest published work Second edition a facsimile reprint of both issues of the Review incorporating the earliest published work by Adam Smith. The Edinburgh Review only ran for this single year from 1755 to 1756 yet its contributors included Adam Smith and William Robertson and it had the fortune to coincide with Rousseau's Discourse on Inequality and Johnson's Dictionary. Both works are covered here by Smith. The journal aimed to review every publication originating in Scotland but this belied a deeper manifesto of social economic and cultural reform. In the preface Alexander Wedderburn 1733-1805 later Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain wrote that the review aimed towards "the progressive state of learning in the country" ODNB. This second edition was supervised by Sir James Mackintosh 1765-1832 a jurist politician and a leading figure in early 19th-century Whiggish history. Mackintosh provides a 12-page preface and explanatory notes in which he puts names to the originally anonymous articles. "Znosko established his credentials with a work entitled A Science of Political Economy according to Adam Smith thought by his contemporaries to be an original work but which later turned out to be a translation of the second editoin of Gaorg Sartorius's 1796 Handbuch. The book is of course a summary of Wealth of Nations but in places Znosko inserts some critical obervations printed in a smaller typeface. An especially bright and fine set in very handsome and well preserved contemporary bindings. The text remains very clean crisp and fresh. There has been no restoration work of any sort to bindings or text. Rare thus. AN UNUSUALLY WELL PRESERVED AND HANDSOME SET OF THIS EXTRAORDINARY WORK. Eighteenth century editions of Smith’s magnum opus are becoming very scarce. This edition of 1811 is a very early English printing of the nineteenth century still in 18th century style. It retains Smith’s introduction and also incorporates the author’s advertisements to the third and fourth editions and a new advertisement to this edition setting out the additions made to the preliminary materials for this edition.
‘The history of economic theory up to the end of the nineteenth century consists of two parts: the mercantilist phase which was based not so much on a doctrine as on a system of practice which grew out of social conditions; and the second phase which saw the development of the theory that the individual had the right to be unimpeded in the exercise of economic activity. While it cannot be said that Smith invented the latter theory – the physiocrats had already suggested it and Turgot in particular had constructed an organised study of social wealth – his work is the first major expression of it. He begins with the thought that labour is the source from which a nation derives what is necessary to it. The improvement of the division of labour is the measure of productivity and in it lies the human propensity to barter and exchange: "labour is the real measure of the exchangeable value of all commodities … it is their real price; money is their nominal price only". Labour represents the three essential elements – wages profit and rent – and these three also constitute income. From the working of the economy Smith passes to its matter – "stock" – which compasses all that man owns either for his own consumption or for the return which it brings him. The Wealth of Nations ends with a history of economic development a definite onslaught on the mercantile system and some prophetic speculations on the limits of economic control.
‘Where the political aspects of human rights had taken two centuries to explore Smith’s achievement was to bring the study of economic aspects to the same point in a single work … The certainty of its criticism and its grasp of human nature have made it the first and greatest classic of modern economic thought’ PMM.
Smith's classic work was begun at Toulouse in 1763-64 where he had travelled as guardian of Henry Scott the young duke of Buccleuch and in the company of David Hume historian and fellow professor at Glasgow University. The work took shape over the next ten years and was finally published in 1776. At one point during its composition Hume wrote that Smith was "cutting himself off entirely from human society." But his labors however severe his methods yielded the "first and greatest classic of modern economic thought" Printing and the Mind of Man.
"It may be said that the WEALTH OF NATIONS certainly operated powerfully through the harmony of its critical side with the tendencies of the half-century which followed its publication to the assertion of personal freedom and 'natural rights.' It discredited the economic policy of the past and promoted the overthrow of institutions which had come down from earlier times but were unsuited to modern society. As a theoretic treatment of social economy and therefore as a guide to social reconstruction and practice in the future it is provisional not definitive. But when the study of its subject comes to be systematized on the basis of a general social philosophy more complete and durable than Smith's no contribution to that final construction will be found so valuable as his" Britannica J. 1801177821Dublin: Printed by N. Kelly and William Porter for P. Wogan Gilbert and Hodges W. Porter J. Moore and B. Dornin 1801. Political economy and the Anglo-Irish union Fourth Irish edition of the "first and greatest classic of modern economic thought" PMM in a handsome contemporary Irish binding. Towards the end of the Wealth of Nations Smith outlines an expansive and audacious plan for the political-economic consolidation of the British Empire. In this plan Ireland was to be united with Great Britain in a move largely modelled on the Anglo-Scottish union of 1707. Smith stresses the political and economic benefits to the Irish anticipating that the move would end British trade restrictions and even neutralize the fractious nature of Irish politics. Ironically Smith's wider theories of political economy in the Wealth of Nations were often co-opted by Irishmen diametrically opposed to his political proposals most notably the United Irishman Arthur O'Connor 1763-1852 whose approach to democratic land reform was "a radicalised version of Smith's political economy" Andersen. The United Irishmen mounted a rebellion in 1798 the failure of which led to precisely the Anglo-Irish union advocated by Smith. This fourth Irish edition was the first to be published in the newly formed United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. 2 vols octavo 204 x 131 mm pp. xiii 1 498; viii 489. 61; lacking blank A1 in vol.
