Einiges über die Mortalitätsverhältnisse beim Kaiserschnitte. Barbara Saxer genannt Babette Saxer auch Sacher oder Sachser 4. August 1839 in Kleinbasel; 5. Dezember 1865 in Basel war eine kleinwüchsige Frau deren Skelett 1988 im ehemaligen Friedhof des Bürgerspitals Basel gefunden wurde. An Babette Saxer wurde 1865 der erste ärztlich dokumentierte Kaiserschnitt im Bürgerspital Basel vorgenommen. "Am 4. Dezember 1865 trat Babette Saxer laut Krankenakte in das Bürgerspital ein nachdem sie bereits sechs Stunden lang Wehen durchgestanden hatte. Als erstes massen die Chirurgen Babettes Becken und stellten fest dass dieses zu eng gebaut war. Zudem ragte der 5. Lendenwirbel in den Geburtskanal hinein. Babette Saxer konnte ihr Kind nicht zur Welt bringen ohne ihr eigenes Leben zu gefährden. Nach drei weiteren Stunden Wehen und dem Blasensprung nahmen die Chirurgen einen Kaiserschnitt vor in den "die etwas idiot.ische Pat.ientin" eingewilligt hatte "wenn es nicht zu weh thun würde". Es war das erste Mal dass diese risikoreiche Operation am Bürgerspital vom damaligen Leiter Johann Jacob Bischoff 1841-1892 dem polnischen Medizinstudenten Adam Zagórski und weiteren Medizinern erfolgreich durchgeführt wurde. Erst gut fünfzig Jahre später wurden Kaiserschnitte routinemässig angewandt. Befürchtungen dass die Chirurgen die Gelegenheit nutzen könnten an einer geistig behinderten Frau aus der Unterschicht einen risikoreichen Eingriff auszuprobieren bestätigten sich nicht. Adam Zagórski publizierte 1868 eine detaillierte Beschreibung des an Babett Saxer durchgeführten Kaiserschnittes. Deshalb ist bekannt dass der 5. Lendenwirbel durch ein Wirbelgleiten den Geburtskanal blockierte. Durch Abtasten und Vermessen des Beckens wussten die Chirurgen darüber Bescheid. Die Durchführung eines Kaiserschnitts war unumgänglich so wie dies der Armenarzt Daniel Ecklin schon vier Monate zuvor erkannt hatte. Während der Operation standen Babette Saxer acht Ärzte und Medizinstudenten bei. Eine eigene Krankenschwester war nach der Operation nur für sie zuständig und ihr Bett wurde vorgewärmt damit sie nach dem Eingriff nicht frieren musste. Um 14.45 Uhr nahmen die Chirurgen den ersten dokumentierten Kaiserschnitt im Bürgerspital Basel vor. Der Eingriff verlief erfolgreich: Babette Saxer brachte ein gesundes kräftiges Mädchen zur Welt. Adam Zagórski schrieb in seiner ausführlichen Beschreibung der Geburt: "Das Kind war nach Herausnahme aus dem Uterus etwas betäubt liess jedoch bald lebhaftes Geschrei erschallen." Angelehnt an die Sectio caesarea Kaiserschnitt erhielt das Kind den Namen Cäsarea Elisabeth. Die äusseren Wunden wurden vernäht die Gebärmutter hingegen nicht. Nach 25 Stunden und einer unruhigen Nacht verlangte die junge Mutter einen Kaffee verstarb jedoch unmittelbar nachdem sie ihn getrunken hatte. "Wir vermuten dass sie sich aufgerichtet hat um den Kaffee zu trinken deshalb die inneren Wunden aufgeplatzt sind und Babette Saxer innerlich verblutete" vermutet Gerhard Hotz. Die junge Frau wurde in einem Totenhemd und mit Totenhaube in einem Holzsarg begraben. Die Bestattung kostete 20 Franken den Monatslohn einer Magd. Babette Saxers Becken wurde nach der Obduktion entnommen die Chirurgen behielten es zu Ausbildungszwecken. Auch wenn es nicht mehr ausfindig gemacht werden konnte ist bekannt wie es aussah und dass es besagte Anomalie des 5. Lendenwirbels aufwies in seiner Dissertation vom Januar 1868 bildete Adam Zagórski eine Zeichnung des Beckens ab." wiki unknown

Adam stayed in India until 1838 working to establish the Calcutta Unitarian Society. He became Professor of Oriental Linguistics at Harvard University and authored a series of letters to warn against the prevailing slavery in the British colonies to Thomas Fowell Buxton Esq. a prominent British member of parliament. Buxton was a well-known abolitionist founder of the anti-slavery society associated with the Gurneys the Religious Society of Friends Quakers and other social reform movements of the day. At fifteen he became assistant master at Ledham School Yorkshire and at eighteen was appointed writing master at Macclesfield Free School where he studied mathematics and issued his first publication <i>A System of Family Bookkeeping</i> 1758. From 1762 to 1766 he ran a school in Manchester teaching a range of commercial and arts subjects and gave lectures on astronomy.<br />In 1766 he bought the apparatus of itinerant lecturer William Griffis gave up his school and became himself an itinerant lecturer. In the same year he also published the first of his very successful tracts his <i>Analysis of a Course of Lectures on Natural and Experimental Philosophy</i> which was first published in Kendal and ran to a twentieth edition in London under the editorship of his sons. Walker travelled through northern England southern Scotland spent four years in Ireland and settled in York. He drew large audiences due to his demonstrations particularly his spectacular eidouranion a transparent orrery which he used for fifty years. He invented and built a cometarium which demonstrated Kepler's first two laws of planetary motion. He was a friend of the well known itinerant lecturer James Ferguson and on Ferguson's death in 1777 Walker acquired his eclipsareon which demonstrated the nature of eclipses. In 1778-79 he gave a series of highly successful lectures in London which prompted him to set up home there in Hanover Square. From his London base Walker continued to travel and his lectures on mechanics were packed by artisans in northern towns.He was friendly with most of the eminent industrialists and scientists of the Lunar Society. He staged a highly successful performance of his new eidouranion in the Theatre Royal Haymarket which was accompanied by the music of the coelestina a mechanical harpiscord producing a continuous sound which had patented in 1772. His <i>Epitome of Astronomy</i> 1782 went through thirty editions. He visited Paris in 1785 toured Flanders Germany France and Italy in 1790 and published his views of French life. He lectured at the public schools of Eton Westminster St. Pauls and Rugby. He also patented improvements to various machines including a method of thermo-ventiliation 1786 and a rotating light. He died at Richmond Surrey in 1821 and is buried in the family vault at Hayes where a monument commemorated him as "The Inventor of the Eidourion".<br />He published several works and described himself variously as "Teacher of the Belles Lettres in Manchester" "Lecturer on Experimental Philosophy" and "Lecturer to the Duke of Gloucester". He was married with one daughter and three sons two of whom continued their father's practice of public and touring lectures. Printed for the Author, [by] G.
