McKendrick to early blank preceding title and following leaf and later ink inscription to modern blank fly. The second edition of the first work of economics in English consciously intended to be used as a textbook: as the author himself notes in a preliminary 'advertisement' the work was to be 'found convenient as a text book in those institutions of liberal education in which the "Wealth of Nations" makes an essential branch of their letters'. Having emigrated in 1832 to Montreal Thom was known for his anti-French Canadian views which he continued to publish after becoming the Montreal Herald's editor in 1835. He traveled to Red River in 1838 after being offered the job of recorder in Rupert's land where he was unpopular with the Metis population due to his francophobia and repressive fur trade measures suggested to the governor Assiniboia. Several petitions by the Metis including Louis Riel Sr. were made for his resignation and in 1851 he was relieved of his duties. 1848 Printed by E. Couchman paperback

Lightly browned creased from old folds with remnants of wax seal. Dated the 8th February 1824 Sir Adam Ferguson 1771-1855 soldier son of the philosopher Adam Ferguson and friend of Sir Walter Scott writes to John Campbell 1766-1840 Congregational minister abolitionist and classmate of Sir Walter Scott suggesting that "an avowed Philanthropist in character generally known & respected 'The Man of Feeling' might fill the chair or move the Resolutions with advantage". 'The Man of Feeling' was the lawyer and writer Henry Mackenzie 1745-1831 familiarly known by the title of his sentimental first novel who also knew Scott. On the verso of the title page is the printed statement - "This pamphlet is reprinted at the Request of the "London Society for Mitigating and gradually Abolishing the state of Slavery throughout the British dominions" and at their suggestion the extracts from Foreign Authors have been translated." <br /> <br /> The British author is critical of Say's who ignores the true cost of Slavery in his work on Political Economy. Hodgson advocates for the abolishment of Slavery. Adam Hodgson was the author of "Remarks During A Journey Through North America in the Years 1819 1820 and 1821 in A Series of Letters" published in 1823. Second English edition published the same year as the first of this analysis of the true economic cost of slavery. Although the son of a slave trader Adam Hodgson 1788-1862 a Liverpudlian merchant wrote and campaigned extensively on the abolition of the slave trade: he equally corresponded with such figures as Robert Southey and James Cropper. In the Letter Hodgson responds to Say's Treatise of Political Economy which was first published in English in 1821. There Say had emphasised the lower economic cost for producers using slave labour. Hodgson sought to demonstrate by quoting extensively from Adam Smith that free labour was a more economically efficient model. The strength of his attack prompted a response from Say who "claimed to have retreated from his earlier position stating his faith in the progressive force and ultimate triumph of antislavery" Glickstein p. 305.
