Much like Easton Press editions do today these were alternate binding for D. Appleton & Co. books although they have the 1 on the last page of text as per Appleton First Edition designation they appear to be reprints from 1905 bound in collectors leather editions by St. Hubert Guild. Limited to 1000 copies these are all from set 68. In Trespasser which we call 14 because it uses cover design 14 but I suspect is actually the first volume printed there is a double page color illustration hand lettered - "Set 68 Printed and Bound for Ida Lake George by ye Craftsmen of Ye St. Hubert Guild" signed by someone indecipherable with an embossed seal St. Hubert Guild incorporated 1905. Which fairly clearly shows that these are actually reprints albeit high quality collectors editions. All have rubbing at the corners. Silk bookmarks. Top edges gilt. Untrimmed. Most volumes G- some fair Master Ardick would be Good. "Design No. 14. This is a very beautiful design of Padloupe designed for Louis IV. It will be noticed that in the center of the panel there are four fleurs de lis reversed and also a triangular design at the top bottom and each side pointing towards the center on a green field. This triumph of the book-binder's art marks a distinct period when extravagance in design was rampant." "Design No. 13. This design has been attributed to the mysterious Le Gascon. It is undoubtedly from the hadn of Clovis Eves and is curious in this respect that is marks the transition of the painted foliage of Le Gascon and the free tooling of Clovis Eves." "Design No. 8 This exquisite design is by Ritter 1740. It was executed for Maria Antoinette and is said to have been found in her cell after she has been guillotined. It was bought by the British Ambassador and presented to George III. whose whole collection of books was subsequently donated to the British Museum at his death." "Design No. 4. This design is one of the first executed by Clovis Eves. It is of the early part of the sixteen century and is a composite of the Italian and the French art." "Cover design 6 by Jeban le Royer of Venicein the sixteenth century. In the center of the panel are four fluers de lis of a composite order blending gracefully into the four panels at the corners are floriated toolings and the center is emphasized by an octagonal panel in three colors." "Design No. 15 Sixteenth century by Berthelet copied from the famous mural panel in the Sistine Chapel at Rome and said to have been designed after Michelangelo and executed for Henry Vlll. It now reposes in the Vatican." Individually bagged for protection. FREE Media Mail Shipping! Images available for any item just ask.
