Flush-cut quarter cloth and plain papered boards with the title indistinctly printed along the spine; stitching loose; however it is probably pretty much an as-issued copy of a very indifferent private press production. Inscribed by the author who later released his hand-set and hand-printed items under the imprint of The Horace Walpole Press. Offered together with four other titles from the Press: 'Occasional Verse' by Rogers 1933; 'More Occasional Verse' by Rogers 1935 and 'Selections from Modern French Poetry' and 'Dips into the Classics' both translated by H.E. Ashley and F.E. Rogers. Although the last two mentioned are undated Farmer 'Private Presses and Australia' 1972 gives 1938 as the publication date of 'Selections from Modern French Poetry'. As this book lists all of the titles recorded by Farmer other than 'Memoirs of a Medico' 1941 it seems reasonable to suggest that the six undated titles in Farmer appeared not later than 1938. Of the four extra titles offered here only 'Occasional Verse' is not inscribed and signed by the author. Frederick Edward Rogers 1865-1947 was an English doctor. He recounts in his memoirs that 'In 1923 my health being indifferent my wife and I and two younger daughters set sail for Adelaide South Australia where we joined our second girl who had married a Digger'. 5 items. This was published during a several-year time period when the Sierra Club did not stipulate the month of an issue just the volume the number and the year monthly designations for such an infrequent publication having always been somewhat unnecessary in any case. Original printed wrappers 9 1/4" x 6 1/4" 120 pp. unpaginated photographic plates and ads including hachure maps of Yosemite Valley and Kings River Canon canyon and a fold-out with bi-scale elevations of the same two locales. also a plate with an illustration of the 14' tall monument of galvanized iron with a brass base installed at the top Mount Shasta in 1875 destroyed by lightning in 1905. Very Good plus really quite close to near fine; the major flaw being the common one that circuit binding yapp binding was used in which cover edges were intentionally extended out beyond page edges but over time the extended part becomes pressed inward somewhat see scan. Early owner's signature at top of contents page. Otherwise just occasional very small points of cover wear. A very handsome copy. See scans. Binding sturdy contents fine. 1958251171958. BALDWIN Faith. Typed Letter Signed. Two pages on both sides of a single sheet; hand-written in ink: "Rt. 2 Meed Ave. Norwalk Conn Sept. 26/58." Note: There are numerous typing errors and hand-written corrections in ink throughout the letter and spelling errors are for the most part not noted in the follow textual description- as there are many. To a teacher in California Baldwin apologizes for the delay in her response to several questions posed by the teacher. "I can reply to your questions only informally and in bad typing as I have never used a secretary and employ two fingers." Baldwin discusses several of her books and writes that Many Windows will be published on her 65th birthday. "About education. I don't have the true equivalent of a high school education. Mrs. Dow's school did give courses which if passed took you into college; but I wasn't interested in college; I was about 17 and a ga half sic when I left Mrs. Dow's. The education in Germany was during the war and consisted of house keeping school didn't learn a thing and of German which I learned. I am not sorry I didn't go to college; I think I would have frittered away my time and probably flunked. I was not a good student for I was far too lazy." Baldwin goes on in some detail about advising students to go to college "if it is possible" and discusses the benefits of a college education and the difficulty of supporting herself as a writer. "You can only eat while you write if you have rich parents or generous and/or a well-heeled husband or wife." Baldwin writes about the demands for college degrees in the business world and says she always advises her students to at least have a good secretarial degree "for this is really an open door. I have seen one advance from typist to private secretary to asst. editor and then editor on a national magazine." Baldwin continues about her father's profession lawyer and her mother's a grade-school teacher and her family's background missionaries editors etc. "It's tougher if you are born into a family without the cultural background but that can be overcome by education." She writes "in this era a college education is extremely valuable and certainly a high school education a must." Also signed by Baldwin as "Mrs. Hugh Cuthrell." Baldwin was known for typing her manuscripts quickly but inaccurately and. unknown
