Twelve consecutive issues of the magazine each measuring 233 x 285 mm. original striking pictorial covers bound in bound in old purple cloth front cover gilt lettered 'Flying Journal'. A beautifully preserved set. A rare survival from the golden age of Australian aviation being a complete run of twelve issues of the monthly journal of the New South Wales Aero Club. The attractive colour covers are all well preserved capturing some of the excitement and romance of flying in the early thirties.</p> <p>The journal features numerous fascinating articles many of which detail aviation in remote and rural areas of Australia. Of special interest are entries on Tasmanian civil aviation the Narromine and Mount Gambier Air Pageants and the rise of Hargrave Air Park. Flying Boats feature prominently as do other technical articles on radio communication systems glider pilot training trials of new models including the Lascondor Saloon Monoplane and the novel Harkness-Hornet and the like.</p> <p>Each issue of the journal includes a scale model plane plan with measurements. Loosely inserted is a price sheet for modelling materials including balsa dopes propeller blanks and sundries printed for Herbert Small Pty. Ltd. This company sold model aeroplane construction parts and sets and lists three separate retail premises in Sydney Melbourne and Adelaide.</p> <p>Complete runs of the Aero Club Journal are noteworthy with only two substantial holdings in Australian instutional collections at the National Library and State Library of New South Wales respectively. This bibliography is not listed in Ian McLaren's comprehensive bibliography Australian Civil Aviation 1994 or his earlier Bibliographical Survey 1958. Likewise it is not noted in the respective bibliographies on Australian aviation by Graeme Potter and Ian Wilson. First edition of this remarkable World War II propaganda pictorial map featuring Berlin Germany situated at the center of concentric bulls-eye circles and the artist has wonderfully detailed how they created this simulated 3-dimensional image as well as a detachable scale to be cut-off and used by the educational viewer. Within days of this map’s publications Allied bombers directed by British Air Marshall Arthur “bomber†Harris directed destructive air raids against the city lasting until March 1944 which also demonstrated the ineffectiveness of bombing population centers in order to alter the course of a War. The Newsmap portion detailing the course of the War in the 215th Week includes the inset maps of Bridgeheads across the Dnepr River as the Soviet forces began pushing German Army units back along the Eastern Front stretching from Leningrad to the Sea of Azov; the New Britain campaigns in the South Pacific; Operations in Burma including pushes over the Burma Road against the Japanese and bombing routes into Italy Germany and central Europe. Manning fl. 1940-1945 was a cartographer with the Chicago Sun and during World War II produced a number of propaganda maps for the Army Orientation Course of the Special Service Division Army Service Forces as part of the United States War Department. Variable dampstaining; front cover of the July issue detached; but all legible. Scarce in any condition. Many entertaining period ads. Fascinating medical history. In the February issue there is an article on diabetes demonstrating a near complete misunderstanding of the pathophysiology and treatment pre-insulin era. In the July issue there is an article by the editor F.E. Daniels entitled "Elements of Decay in American Civilization" demonstrating that medical doctors are capable of the most virulent racism and anti-immigrant xenophobia. "The United States government made the initial mistake in permitting the importation of black cannibals as slaves---from whom have descended ten millions of the most undesirable citizens; and our people have mixed with them until according to Surgeon Major R.W. Shufeldt U.S.A. retired in his wonderful book 'The Negro a Menace to American Civilization' fully one-half of them have an admixture of white blood; and although intermarriage with them is prohibited in most States miscegenation is going on with all the evils to our race attendant upon hybridization---the admixture with inferior blood. Major Shufeldt says that if this goes on in course of time no man woman or child in America can be sure that he has no negro blood in his veins. The United States government made the further mistake of welcoming to its shores and absorbing countless hordes of individuals of interior races---the scourings and outcasts of the world; not the true immigrants so needed and so cordially welcomed in the young days of our Republic but paupers syphilitics consumptives criminals anarchists. The American people have already lost most of their race characteristics by interbreeding with these until we are rapidly approaching if we have not become a race of mongrels. Some of these people were paupers on arrival but amassed great wealth and became the ancestors of some of our 'aristocracy.' And their descendants drunk with wealth and luxury have ceased to breed or if they have offspring it is fewer and feebler by reason of the effeminacy induced by luxury idleness and dissipation. The tendency here is to race suicide." Referring to ".the refuse of Europe---the criminal the anarchist the pauper" the editor of this journal says "Of this class doubtless came the Orchards the Harry Thaws the Czolgozs Prendergasts the Guiteaus et id. om. gen. They included two Inscribed association copies one Signed copy of an unpublished poetry collection and a rare promotional flyer. All are first editions. Three are hardcovers with original or contemporary dustwrapers and two are paperback originals. Overall very good with moderate wear and some with dampstaining or soiling.<br /> <br /> Vilas 1878-1955 was a poet and playwright who graduated from Lewis Institute in Chicago and authored five collections of poetry and 14 plays. She read and lectures across the county and on radio in the Washington DC where she lived with her husband who was a prominent Milwaukee lawyer served on the Federal Trade Commission. The works here appear to have come from the Palmer family of Bethesda Maryland with three books inscribed or signed to them and two of them with notes from Vila in the text adding background or explaining the inspiration behind various poems.<br /> <br /> An interesting collection of poetry from a successful but now overlooked poet.<br /> <br /> List:<br /> <br /> Fiat Lux Let There Be Light: A Modern Mystery Play. 19758707Santa Cruz: The Written Word Collective 1975. Ostensibly the record of a Women In American Music course taught by Karlene Faith at the University of California in Spring of 1975 but more importantly the basis of academic study into the power and importance of women musicians and songwriters a previously totally ignored field of study and research. Undeniably an important historical document in light of the fact as Faith relates in the introduction of the book that this course was unique at the time of its teaching and only came to be after a new Women's Studies program was adopted at UCSC a previous incarnation having been rejected a year before when pitched to a male administrator with the comment that it was "too narrow". When preparing the course Faith discovered how little contemporary research existed regarding women in music. Aside from the insightful essays and lectures the volume Includes a resource list descriptions of the class lectures and projects student statements testimonials of guest speakers and photographs of all the women who participated in the making of the book. A scarce document with an undeniably far reaching effect upon the understanding of the influence of women on popular music. Frances Fuchs' essay in particular "And We Sing of Love" speaks eloquently of the contradictions inherent in being a feminist listening to Nina Simone appreciated her fluency and genius but finding it complicated to sing along to "When you like a fella treat him right give him your attention day and night. Even when he's wrong tell him that he's right you can take the blame both day and night." She speaks of Joni Mitchell's "Constant search for the perfect illusional love consequent defeat and self destruction." and how the music and lyrics of Toni Brown provided a shift for her away from that but noting that "many of her lyrics convey the dissatisfaction with being a woman in today's world." Additional pieces of writing similarly discuss the importance of African American singers in providing alternative musical narratives through Blues R&B and Soul. The first step of an important journey away from 'women who make music' and towards 'women-identified music' music for by and about women with all the distinctions that embodies.
