189716289Leiden and London: Brill & Porter 1897. FIRST EDITION. With 22 chromo-lithographed plates. Original publisher’s pictorial green cloth title in gilt to spine and top cover with patterned end-papers; edges stained green. Label pasted on to the front paste-down indicating that this copy is No. 26 of 170 copies of this edition with the stamp of the Librairie et Imprimerie ci-divant E.J. Brill with a signature. First edition of this beautifully illustrated work which includes not only adult birds but also their chicks and their eggs. Taken from the birds living in the Amsterdam Zoological Garden in 1872 the illustrations were commissioned by G.F. Westerman 1807-90 the director of the Gardens. Westerman wanting to enlighten the public as to the beauty of these birds appointed the great German artist and illustrator Heinrich Leutemann 1824-1905 who created fifteen of the plates. As Westerman died before the monograph was completed the Dutch naturalist Blaauw 1860-1936 stepped in and supplied the text commissioning an additional seven plates by the renowned bird artist and illustrator J.G. 1889005255Claremont 1889. Wooden box. Very Good. N.d. circa late 19th century. 52 separate sheets housed within a handsome wooden carrying case or box. Fifty of these sheets contains a dried and flattened plant sample -- flowers leaves and stems -- with the plant or flower identified in a neat handwriting and most unusual accompanied by a pen and ink vignette. The vignettes are a mix -- some replicate the plant or leaf and thus might be regarded as modestly scientific in purpose; others are of objects or animals which a pleasant to look at or have an appealing association to the artist -- tennis racquets a sailing boat an owl and the like; yet a third group and these are to us the most special are pure whimsy with a touch of humor. This third category also doesn't relate to the plants or flowers. Perhaps one thing that ties all the extra artistic fillips together is that they have an outdoorsy sporty or summer day quality about them. It goes without saying that the plant samples are arranged neatly and even artistically. We know who the collector and artist was because his name is on both a title page and a brass label attached to the carrying case. The title page also informs us that this collection was created during the Summer of 1889 and for Claremont High School. We would guess that the Claremont in question is one in New Hampshire based on where this collection was found but we can not state that definitively. At the time Claremont was a prosperous mill town and presumably this young Willey would have been from an affluent family who afforded him the leisure to create such a collection. including a title page a second prelim with a pencil illustration of a rose and "Handle with Care" exhortation and 50 leaves with leaf and flower samples every one of which also has an original sketch of some kind. The box really an artist's carrying case with wooden handles attached with thin braided rope to the wood an brass clasps and studs measures 35 by 27.5 cm and is 4.5 cm deep. Each of the leaves the sheets is 32.5 by 25 cm. Loss of some leaves and some chipped leaves as to be expected given the dryness of the organic material. Chips on the side of the title. The title and other prelim are discolored by the metal bar which has held them down in the box. unknown
189050404Santa Fe: New Mexican Printing Company 1890. 1890. NEW MEXICO. First edition. 8vo. Pictorial wrappers 216 pp. two lithographed folding maps: 1. "Official Map Of New Mexico 1890. Prepared By The Bureau Of Immigration." 2. "Map Of The Santa Fe Route And Connections." An uncommon promotional for the territory of New Mexico printed in Santa Fe by the Bureau of Immigration and including large folding maps of New Mexico and its land grants and of the Santa Fe Railroad and connections. The text covers a wide range of subjects such as the land and its energy resources farming cattle raising manufacturing irrigation projects the New Mexico Hot Springs schools population statistics and a long section of detailed descriptions of the New Mexico territory county by county. Herd 857 says "Scarce." The first map shows the location boundaries and grantees of all of the numerous early Spanish and Mexican land grants prepared by the Bureau of Immigration of which Max Frost was a member of the Executive Committee. The status of land grants in New Mexico at this time was a matter of contention and the detailed information given on this map would have been of interest to current and prospective land owners in the territory. The second map by Rand McNally shows the routes and extensive connections along the Santa Fe Railroad from Chicago to Missouri and then snaking into Kansas and throughout the Southwest. This work is scarce to rare. Rebacked with both the original front and rear covers laid-down separation along the spine joint of the front cover has been expertly repaired small closed tear to fore-edge of front cover expertly repaired else a very good clean and solid copy. This appears to be the first printing of this edition with additional material on the early missions that did not appear in the earlier editions. This edition not found in Streit. This trove of research material contains the Jesuit reports on their world-wide missionary activities in Asia China India Malabar Siam etc. Africa Abyssinia Algiers etc. the Middle East Aleppo Bagdad Constantinople Isfahan Smyrna etc. Oceania Gambier Marquise Tonga etc. including the American missions in Louisiana Texas Kentucky. Ohio Michigan Florida Alabama Missouri Tennessee Oregon California the Rocky Mountain regions and Hawaii. 18470002411MARION ALABAMA BIRMINGHAM AL. Good. 1847. On offer is a super significant ante bellum manuscript letter handwritten by Dr. F.E. Gordon writing to his sister in Charleston South Carolina about his new life in Marion Alabama. Dated May 15 1847 the four 4 page offers up a scathing review. Dr. Gordon who would go on to be a noted member of the medical community in Marion for having published papers on fever and dysentery in a number of medical journals had apparently just moved to Alabama from South Carolina to set up his medical practice. He writes of his wife Sarah and their young son bemoaning the fact that Alabama is a less civilized less hospitable place than South Carolina. Here are some snippets: "Alabama differs much from S. Carolina and in nothing more than in the general demoralization which prevails. Public faith and private have long ago fallen into disrepute; and they are at present canvassing whether they shall repudiate the state debt as Mississippi did a few years ago or not. For my part I shall never cease to deplore the want of honesty and of refinement which are equally prevalent throughout this State. All the ceremonies which are so punctiliously kept up by the better classes in Charleston are unknown here; and those who pretend to lead the fashion and rule the politics of the state would be dubbed "outer barbarians" in your native City. In Mobile you can find some good society although the same moral tone pervades the most of that city." He says he is determined to make the best of it however. He mentions that though there are few amusements no theater or balls save for events at the local schools: Howard College Marion Female Seminary and the Judson Institute. He attends a series of lectures on Natural Philosophy and Chemistry given by Prof. Sherman at Howard College. He says he has also been called to court on cases to give "medical testimony." Tells several fairy stories with six 6 full-page pop-up scenes including: "The Procession of Nursery Rhymes"; "A Visit to the Snow Queen's Palace"; "The Fairies' Lake"; "Jack Running Away from the Giant"; "The Queen of the Bird Fairies"; and "The Babes Asleep in the Wood". Six stunning three-dimensional stand-up scenes. Large oblong format. Green cloth spine colour pictorial paper boards. Front cover shows the Babes in the Wood riding on a leaf in the air harnessed to a pair of robins. Green/white floral endpapers. Spine has been rebacked with red cloth. Corners and cover edges are worn. There is some scuffing to the covers. Front free-endpaper is missing. Inscription in ink to top margin of title-page. One page has a large closed tear which has been neatly repaired. From the pop-up scenes there are some flowers missing at the top of the fairy's oar in the swan picture and the giant is missing from behind Jack in the Jack and the Giant picture otherwise the pop-ups are complete bright and in excellent working order. Some foxing though mainly marginal and 2 plates with some staining while towards the end there is a marginal brown stain not touching the plate area but for the last few text pages just touching the letters. The yellow glazed endpapers are brown mottled. Illustrations 1-80 show nature mostly as groups of animals and plants. Illustrations 81-241 depict trades incl. several cooking scenes miners textile weaving wig-makers etc. 243-256 cosmography & geography showing different religions virtues. 269-282 show children playing men playing billiards wrestling circus & theatres lessons in fencing dancing balloon rides fireworks bullfights horse racing a marvellous train with a postillion blowing a horn & open coaches and a chimney like a barber's pole later we see deep sea diving bells being used to salvage cannons. There is an example of slave traders a summer fair and Christmas celebrations finally a few more trades eg. forging steel the file maker carpets being made nightwatchman messenger and post with finally a grave-side scene. Each illustration is accompanied by a 5 language text - English German French & Latin and newly added for the first time in this edition Italian. These describe the animals and the trades etc. This Gailer reworking of the Orbis Pictus is nearly a new book and makes one of the most complete book of trades cf. Seebass 398 Wegehaupt I 697. All sorts of fragile pieces such as duck heads ribbons flying fingers etc are all intact. The text page edges have fared less well with some edge fingering and some edge chips but never affecting any print. What The Children Like a scarce children's pop-up book with an introduction by author and lyricist F.E. Weatherly. Published by Ernest Nister in 1897. In quarter red cloth with pictorial paper boards. Contains five pop-up folding colour plates and numerous in-text illustrations. Collated complete.Ernest Nister was a pioneer of children's books being the first publisher to design pop-up books which he would create at his toy-making center in Nuremberg and later be shipped to both Britain and America. This particular pop-up book is an excellent original example of such a work containing many short stories and poems for children to enjoy including Blind Man's Buff. In quarter red cloth with pictorial paper boards. Externally slight fading and the faint marks to board heavier to the extremities and rear board. Slight rubbing to spine and bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Loss to cloth on rear board extremities and signs of edgewear. Decorative end papers are generally bright and clean with slight fading to the extremities. Internally firmly bound with slight wear between leaves of Willie Would a Fishing Go. Pages are generally bright and clean with slight age toning while pop-up plates are bright and clean with slight creasing on left-hand side of pop-up with children racing. Cover panel as well as panel offering analysis of the water at the Phoenix Hotel written by Walter S. Haines M.D. printed in red and black ink. Opposite 2 panels offer a chromolithograph of the hotel. The Phoenix Hotel was "built in 1887 had 250 guest rooms and replaced the Montezuma Hotel which was destroyed by fire in 1884. In 1903 the hotel closed down and in 1923 the building became a Baptist college. In the late 1980s the site became the home of the Armand Hammer United World College and is now known as the Davis International Center. The hotel known as the castle was constructed by the Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad as a luxury hotel featuring the natural hot springs on the site. According to the pamphlet the chemical composition of the water primarily consists of Carbonates and Sulphates of Sodium and was touted to assist with tuberculosis rheumatism and gout. 3/4" split to top fold along with a 1/2" water mark to top edge. The pages have been resewn and the book is now fully stable and all pop-ups work MONTANARO 335. Chipping and wear to edges of both covers with a few creases to rear cover. The cord has pulled out of several pages and at some point the book was resewn with thread; however the pages were rebound out of order. The title page is near the end of the book and one additional page is out of order but no missing pages. Pen marking to one page smudge marks and soiling to other pages.
