The American edition's front cover features an illustration in gold on green background of a path leading to an Egyptian-style gateway and the title is stamped in gold on spine. On the frontispiece there is a contemporary photograph of Alcyone. The book includes a preface by Annie Besant and a dedication page with the inscription "To Those Who Knock". Green and gold decorated end papers. This is Krishnamuirt's first publication first released in India in 1910 this is the 1st American edition published one year later. The book is in good condition with some rubbing to edges some faint staining and fading to cloth. Front free end paper is missing one 1/2" by 1/16th" of decoration. Interior is clean and tight. 1956187784New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers 1956. First edition of this collection of 88 essays by the Theosophical Society's "Chosen One". Krishnamurti was raised to be the vessel for the "coming" of the World Teacher but he rejected this plan declaring he did not want followers. He later expanded upon the Commentaries on Living with a second 1958 and third series 1960. The editor Desikachayra Rajagopal 1900-1993 was raised to be a spiritual leader alongside Krishnamurti 1895-1986. Rajagopal departed the Theosophical Society with Krishnamurti in 1929 and from 1927 to 1967 he edited and published Krishnamurti's public lectures. Their relationship and its controversial end is described in Lives in the Shadow with J. Krishnamurti 1991 by Rajagopal's daughter Radha. Octavo. Original black quarter cloth spine lettered in silver brown board sides with publisher's silver device on front fore edge uncut. With dust jacket. Lean to spine rubbing to edges; jacket toned and with scattered marks including splash marks on spine chips to ends and corners unclipped: very good in like jacket. hardcover
