'FROM THE AUTHOR' Smith also wrote A Treatise on the Diseases of Infancy and Childhood. Philadelphia 1869. Cyanosis or 'blue disease' is described here in full via the author's 2-part lecture at the New York Academy of Medicine February 18 and March 4 1863. Smith considered the talk statistical as its results are based on the analyses of 191 cases. Within his paper is a detailed history of the literature on the same topic. 'It is only just to state that Dr. J. Lewis Smith of New York in his admirable work on Diseases of Infancy and Childhood gives the best consideration of this subject that I have met with among out systematic treatises.' - Frank Woodbury 'The Significance of Bloody Discharges from the Bowels in Young Children' JAMA vol. III no. 7 August 1884 p. 180. Smith was born in Spafford NY. His studies took him to the Buffalo Medical School where he interned. Smith graduated from the College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York 1853. He worked as physician to the Charity Hospital and the NY foundling asylum etc. Ashwal mentions Smith as one of the persons advancing the field of pediatrics which he tells started in the early nineteenth century but also developed more strongly by the middle of the century. An early American survey of agriculture and agricultural practices with information partially borrowed from Spurrier and Bordley as well as some gleaned from the author's own polls. On drink Roberts writes "I would wish to introduce the drinking of beer in this country for the common drink; knowing by experience that it is the most wholesome beverage made use of therefore recommend it to private families to brew their own beer." There are also a few pages on cider and some discussion of grasses. Veterinary interests extend to a cure for Botts a worm particularly damaging to horses. There is also information and useful recipes regarding gypsum plaster salt and 'stuffing boots'. ~ Contemporary tree calf a little eroded at spine ends red morocco spine label titles in gilt; spine gilt-ruled. Age-toned and lightly foxed throughout but still a very good copy. With the bookplate of culinary collector Marcus Crahan and earlier period ink ownership inscription of the 'Buckingham Library' to the front paste down. Scarce. Rebound in brown cloth. Leather spine label. Hardbound. Very Good. 'Squire' Job Roberts 1757-1851 was a remarkable man of Welsh Quaker decent. He was born lived and died in Whitpain close to Gwynedd and for many years he was one of the most conspicuous figures in the farming business and social circles of Gwynedd. He did much to improve the methods of farming planted hedges introduced the feeding of green fodder to cattle instead of grazing built a barn which was enormously large according to the usual standard and very early introduced the use of gypsum on fields. He was one of the first in Pennsylvania to introduce and breed Merino sheep and during the movement to establish the manufacture of silk he was one of its most zealous promoters. In 1791 Gov. Mifflin appointed him a justice of the peace and he continued as such until 1820 when he resigned and returned to farming and other entreprenureal pursuits. S&S/AI 7203; Sabin 71898; Rink 1148. A good sound copy. A work of Emersonian pantheism by the Chief Judge of the Rhode Island Supreme Court who presided over the Dorr trials. In an earlier work The Influence of Scientific Discovery and Invention on Social and Political Progress 1843 Durfee believed that he had found in the advent of steam power a sign of divine intervention indicating a "law of progress" in man's development. Panidea adumbrates this theme: all is eventually assimilated into the "Theanthropoid" Durfee's term for the Divine Mind. See Schneider History of American Philosophy. Durfee here propounds the theory that "the recent revolutionary development of steam power was not merely an instance of man making progress it was a revelation of the divine 'law of progress' and of a 'higher destiny' planned by God himself for the new age" Schneider History of American Philosophy. These ideas were adumbrated by Durfee in The Panidea; Or An Omnipresent Reason Considered as the Creative and Sustaining Logos 1846 "a pretentious work that nobody read" DAB. More charitable comments are made by Joseph Blau in his collection of American Philosophic Addresses 1700 to 1900 page 381 ff where the Oration is reprinted in full. An important aspect of Durfee's deterministic theory of history is that "there is no absolute undefinable popular sovereignty which can in a manner its own and at any moment carry a certain supposed natural equality into social and political life and thereby elevate poor human nature however rude and degraded in condition at once as by a sort of magic into a state of supreme and absolute perfection" quoted by Blau. This is because the advances of science and technology impose conditions upon society which democracy cannot control and to which it must adapt. Blau notes that Durfee's views were influenced by German transcendentalism as mediated by Coleridge and Cousin. Not surprisingly given his skepticism on the efficacy of popular sovereignty Durfee as Chief Justice of the Rhode Island Supreme Court played a prominent role in opposition to the Dorr forces. Part of a large collection of Quaker / Society of Friends books used for religious and philosophical education. This collection was acquired in Northern Virginia and ranges from 1800-1930. The books are interesting for both their content and for what 19th-century Friends felt were important books for religious education and thought. Many of the volumes are from the Janney family's library. There are duplicates of a number of Quaker books authored by the Janneys and some of the volumes have book plates or signatures from Phineas Janney 1778-1852 and his nephew Phineas Janney Jr members of Hopewell Friends Meeting in Loudoun Co. He entered the academy of Dr Philip Doddridge at Northampton q.v. became minister of a congregation formed by a fusion of Presbyterians and Independents at High Street Chapel Shrewsbury 1741 received Presbyterian ordination there 1745 resigned in 1766 owing to ill-health and lived in retirement at Kidderminster until his death. He exerted great influence both among dissenting ministers and among clergy of the established church. He was deeply read in Puritan divinity and adopted Sabellian doctrines on the Trinity. Old-fashioned in most of his views he disliked the tendencies alike of the Methodists and other revivalists and of the rationalizing dissenters yet he had a good word for Priestley and Theophilus Lindsey.<br /> Among his numerous works are Letters to Dissenting Ministers ed. by S.
