The Cape Colony was established by the Dutch East India Company in 1652. After occupying the colony from 1795-1803 Great Britain assumed formal control in 1806. British possession was recognized by the Anglo-Dutch treaty of 1814. A parliament was established in 1854. It existed until the colony was incorporated into the Union of South Africa in 1910. South Africa became an independent republic in 1961. These volumes offer valuable insight into the administration of the colony in its final decades.
