Early signatures on the front endpapers and rear flyleaf by "Donald Graham". The text is a little toned but is clean. Jean-Joseph-Gustave Cler 1814-1859 was a French General and member of the Zouaves. He served in the light infantry in North Africa in the 1840s and was part of a force of 1200 soldiers sent to the Crimean War in the 1850s here he was promoted to brigadier general and commanded the 62nd and 73 Infantry Regiments. It was here that he earned his Legion of Honour and in 1856 he led the 1st Infantry Brigade. He as killed at the Battle of Magenta during the Second Italian War for Independence. <br/> <br/> D.
